To think for £100 a week to live at home I can have a shower every day?

tryinghere · 23/03/2024 10:58

I live at home, I work f/t and I'm doing an online course. I pay £100 a week contribution and I am moaned at for spending about 15 minutes a day in the shower.
Admittedly one day I was in there half an hour and accepted that I was in there a long time, I was asked to be more considerate and I did, but, I have reduced it to 15 minutes a day and that's still too long.
Apparently it's not necessary to be in there that long and the rest of the family make sacrifices and go without only showering every other day and using sink and flannel in between, I hate this.

My parents don't have a lot of money but they do have 4 children and my mum chooses to stay at home meaning she chooses that we make sacrifices.
As the oldest, I'm the only one paying my way and don't feel it's unreasonable to shower for 15 minutes a day.
I get my parents choose not to so they can save money but I pay them a lot.
Do I stand my ground on this one and shower away or is 15 minutes ott for £100 a week.

@itsstillrainingnow Why is it ok for OPs DM to do it but it wasnt ok for my ex to do it.

Several years ago under another username i posted about my ex timing me in the shower. Now what do you think the reaction was. Do you think he got loads of support (like the OPs DM ) or do you think i got told he was controlling

Whaddya reckon?

I recon living with your ex and presumably paying the bills yourself or at least half, you can do as you please. Not quite the same as living under your parents roof and by their house rules because they pay the bills and can't afford the shower running for an hour and half a week.
Imagine if all 6 did that it would be on for 9 hours a week. Op said her parents sacrificed their own showers to make up for hers and she thinks they're out of order.

JenniferBooth · 25/03/2024 21:24

Do you reckon OPs mum can afford to lose £400 a month over a few extra mins in a shower. Yes thats 100 a WEEK for those who have misread it

Floofydawg · 25/03/2024 21:24

Spot on @itsstillrainingnow. Also the OP has not said her parents are literally timing her showers. Just that she's been asked to be more mindful and considerate.

She's hardly making £400pm profit is she. There's extra food to buy, cost of bills etc.

I remember reading a similar post from a step parent complaining about their adult step daughter having 30min showers (they weren't paying any rent) and they were told to stop being so tight and it's her home so she shouldn't have to pay any rent 🙄

People seem to think she’s paying £100 a week just for showers. £14 a day for bed and board is an absolute bargain! It’s laughable that people are saying the parents are profiting.

Oh quelle surprise that its different rules when its a stepmum 🙄

Beachywave · 25/03/2024 21:32

According to Google, a 10 minute shower costs 62p so let’s say you average £1 per day, offer them an extra £30 a month? Although I honestly don’t think you’re paying enough as it is if your £100pw includes your food/shampoo etc

PostItInABook · 25/03/2024 21:32

I hate people who try to police shower times. 15 minutes is NOT a long time for a proper shower. Not everything has to be done at warp speed. I shower for at least 20-30 minutes, sometimes longer. It’s my place of relaxation. Water is soothing to me.

Thereader91 · 25/03/2024 20:59

I'm going against the grain here. Whilst I think £100 isnt a lot these days and you should maybe think about upping it a bit, I also dont think 15 mins is too long for a shower, 30 yes but not 15. I've always taken unintentionally long showers, I can't help it, they're really relaxing. Usually by the time I'm relaxed at least 10 mins have passed and I still need to get washed etc. I'm not understanding the hot water running out though, do you not have a combi boiler? Or am I just being daft?

We don't have a combo boiler and a 15 minute shower would completely use up the supply of hot water for the day.

Mumsnetters all say that adult kids should be able to live at home rent free forever, or if you do take money for food you should save it up and give it back to them when they move out. Like the supermarket will only charge you 50% for your shopping if you’ve got adult kids living at home. God forbid grown adults should actually grow up at some point.

Hopebridge · 25/03/2024 21:40

So if you're on around £1,300 a month after tax and NI and rent then a gym membership maybe a good answer to the longer showers as someone suggested. That or paying your parents more. I have 3 siblings and paid my parents 25% of my income when I started earning. It was the same for all of us and I found that fair.

I didn't compare my situation to other friends that paid less or more. Everyone is unique. If your parents are asking you to do something I would be respectful of that. If you want more freedom then do as I did save and move out.

Yes exactly! I remember a post where OP was struggling for money and charging their adult child £100pcm and people were saying she was greedy!

Well it's lucky you live by your own means then, some people can't afford for a large family to do that.
There's lots of luxuries people enjoy but it doesn't mean they're entitled to especially if someone else is paying the bill.

Floofydawg · 25/03/2024 21:42

@PostItInABook it's also a good job you don't live in a country where there are water shortages. I'm guessing you don't have a water meter, and that your bathroom is mouldy.

What a stupid post. I live in the UK and my bathroom is perfectly fine thanks. That’s what extractor fans and windows are for. 🙄

I still use less water on average than most households so I’ll carry on as I please.

Floofydawg · 25/03/2024 21:52

Yep I'm sure you will. Terrible waste of water.

Anyotherdude · 25/03/2024 22:11

@PostItInABook Seriously? 4 minutes should be enough for soaping, cleansing and rinsing your body, unless you’re the size of an elephant or you’ve got the equivalent of an entire encrustation of ground-in dirt over your entire body!
If you shower daily, and aren’t in the dirty work business like mining or sewer clearing, it’s unreasonable to take more than a few minutes to get clean. And £100 per month doesn’t cut it for showers longer than that: as a PP has already said.
If you want a relaxing experience instead of a “normal” shower, join a gym and use their showers, steam rooms and saunas… keep, or rent, paid to parents are to help with the cost of utilities, not to provide a luxury experience…

Sennelier1 · 25/03/2024 22:16

Rhaenys · 25/03/2024 18:17

To be fair, they did choose to have 4 children. OP aside, the other 3 are presumably still minors. Why should they have to suffer for their parents’ lifestyle choices?

Excuse me? So you think parents should in eternity provide their adult !!! children with not only lodging and food but also - in this case - with unrestricted showers? Maybe do their shopping and laundry too? The young lady chooses to study and work ánd to reside at her parent's place. She should be gratefull!

Before we all attack the Op…
have we all timed how long we take in a shower?
as I genuinely do not have a clue how long my showers take.
I would guess 5-7 mins but I have no idea
I might time it next time

Just timed my shower and forgot to turn it off, it was still only 6 minutes when I had finished getting dried and into dressing gown.
I hate showers though, it's just another chore to do, don't get why people want to spend ages cleaning themselves, yes it's nice to be clean like it's nice to have a clean car but I don't enjoy the task or spend more time than is needed doing so.

I don't think 15 mins is that bad. I wash and condition my hair which takes time to rinse out properly plus there's washing, shaving etc. 30 mins is definitely too long.

My son pays £75 a week and I wouldn't limit his bathroom time. He gets everything included in that payment plus treats/takeaways.

It does seem unfair to pick holes in how long you take given that you are contributing plenty
