To think for £100 a week to live at home I can have a shower every day?

tryinghere · 23/03/2024 10:58

I live at home, I work f/t and I'm doing an online course. I pay £100 a week contribution and I am moaned at for spending about 15 minutes a day in the shower.
Admittedly one day I was in there half an hour and accepted that I was in there a long time, I was asked to be more considerate and I did, but, I have reduced it to 15 minutes a day and that's still too long.
Apparently it's not necessary to be in there that long and the rest of the family make sacrifices and go without only showering every other day and using sink and flannel in between, I hate this.

My parents don't have a lot of money but they do have 4 children and my mum chooses to stay at home meaning she chooses that we make sacrifices.
As the oldest, I'm the only one paying my way and don't feel it's unreasonable to shower for 15 minutes a day.
I get my parents choose not to so they can save money but I pay them a lot.
Do I stand my ground on this one and shower away or is 15 minutes ott for £100 a week.

Pay some more and say its for your long showers 😂
But yep water is expensive! When my son was having a hard time at school he'd have half hour showers as a way to decompress after, my water bill shot up 😅

Blackcats7 · 25/03/2024 18:34

My ex used to spend 15-30 minutes in the shower which drove me mad. I could never work out why he took so long then finally the penny dropped. It was a wanking time.

Emmz1510 · 25/03/2024 18:36

I don’t think 15 mins in the shower is excessive as a lot of people here seem to! I have long thick hair that takes a while to shampoo twice, condition and rinse properly. I have to wash every time I shower as it’s greasy otherwise. But I don’t always shower every day. Also if you want to shave legs and armpits that takes time too.

I do however think yabu because £100 per month is not a high amount of digs. Can you ask them to accept your long showers but say you will pay more?

Surely you are using nearly all the hot water if you’re in there for 15 mins. I can understand why they moan, that’s a really long time

She pays £400 per month.

Not really hard to see how people end up in controlling relationships when its what they were used to at home

Eh??

JenniferBooth · 25/03/2024 18:53

@Floofydawg

Several years ago under another username i posted about my ex timing me in the shower. Now what do you think the reaction was. Do you think he got loads of support (like the OPs DM) or do you think i got told he was controlling.

Whaddaya reckon?

sashagabadon · 23/03/2024 11:05

It’s a waste of water for a start, is v annoying for others waiting for you to finish plus makes the bathroom like a steam room unnecessarily which takes a while to air. 5 mins easily enough
just don’t do it or move out!

I'm not long back from the Costa del Sol (Spain) where a very dry winter has left the local people very concerned about the water levels. Maybe the advice given by the hotel will help OP.

  1. Wet yourself thoroughly
  2. Turn off shower
  3. Lather up (hair as well)
  4. Rinse off
  5. Turn off shower
Repeat steps 3, 4, 5 as necessary.

Take as long as you like and save water. I remember when it was customary to leave the tap running while cleaning teeth - we would never do that now.

aodirjjd · 25/03/2024 18:56

£24k?? Bloody hell move out how embarrassing.

Harry12345 · 25/03/2024 19:27

I wouldn’t tell my adult children to get out before 15 mins, 400 is enough for me and I love having them here, unless they’re totally struggling Yanbu

Vonesk · 25/03/2024 19:50

You are well within your rights to use shower for 15 minutes. They sound very harsh.
I should have a shower at a less conspicuous time so no one notices, all that nagging would get to me.

StormingNorman · 25/03/2024 20:00

I love a long shower. For anyone asking how it lasts that long…I just stand under it doing nothing and stretching my muscles. The heat helps relax them.

OP…you shouldn’t be made to feel guilty for a 15 minute shower. You work FT, you study, you pay ample for your share of the utilities. Enjoy your showers!

ScreamingBeans · 25/03/2024 20:23

Having a shower every day is bare minimum to feel clean and ready for the world in my book.

Just teach yourself to do it in 3-5 minutes so that you're not regularly taking 15 minutes.

QuickDraining · 25/03/2024 20:23

Set the stopwatch today. Just over 5 minutes. Wasn't rushed. This included scrubbing my feet and cleaning under each and every toe nail. Thorough flannel soap wash and rinse. I realised after I took longer cleaning my teeth.

Hoping OP will be out the shower soon to reply. Worried they've been washed down the plughole.

norfolkgirl88 · 25/03/2024 20:29

There are some very harsh people on tonight! This is a clearly a young person who probably doesn't know how much things cost. I think 100 pounds is a lot to pay and having a 15 minute shower every day should be reasonable. I also get that your parents are worried about money but you are out working and contributing a lot in my opinion.

ScartlettSole · 25/03/2024 20:37

15 mins is NOT that long for a shower. Not everyone jumps in, gets wet and jumps out again.
Im roughly 20 mins in the shower, i dont see it as excessive and to answer the "but what are you doing" comments, i wash my hair, condition it, wash my self, shave from the nose to the toes, exfoliate, rinsing and relaxing.

If its the only bathroom i would say its basic manners / being considerate to give people a heads up you are going in so they can pee first!

Bonbon249 · 25/03/2024 20:47

As others have asked, what are you doing in there - are you a teenage boy?

BluebelllsRosesDaffodills · 23/03/2024 12:11

What is her contribution to the family then?!

The official timer of showers by the sounds of it 😂😂

Surely you don't wash your hair, condition it and full body shave

every day?

Yes i dont see why thats unreasonable? 🤷🏼‍♀️

fleurneige · 25/03/2024 20:56

Well, it ceetainly is not good for your hair or your skin- nor for the environment. So I find it hard to believe.

Thereader91 · 25/03/2024 20:59

I'm going against the grain here. Whilst I think £100 isnt a lot these days and you should maybe think about upping it a bit, I also dont think 15 mins is too long for a shower, 30 yes but not 15. I've always taken unintentionally long showers, I can't help it, they're really relaxing. Usually by the time I'm relaxed at least 10 mins have passed and I still need to get washed etc. I'm not understanding the hot water running out though, do you not have a combi boiler? Or am I just being daft?

What? How do you get a controlling relationship from don't use all the hot water?

Dont believe it then 😂
My hairs absolutely fine though but thanks for the concern.
