To think for £100 a week to live at home I can have a shower every day?

1000 replies

tryinghere · 23/03/2024 10:58

I live at home, I work f/t and I'm doing an online course. I pay £100 a week contribution and I am moaned at for spending about 15 minutes a day in the shower.
Admittedly one day I was in there half an hour and accepted that I was in there a long time, I was asked to be more considerate and I did, but, I have reduced it to 15 minutes a day and that's still too long.
Apparently it's not necessary to be in there that long and the rest of the family make sacrifices and go without only showering every other day and using sink and flannel in between, I hate this.

My parents don't have a lot of money but they do have 4 children and my mum chooses to stay at home meaning she chooses that we make sacrifices.
As the oldest, I'm the only one paying my way and don't feel it's unreasonable to shower for 15 minutes a day.
I get my parents choose not to so they can save money but I pay them a lot.
Do I stand my ground on this one and shower away or is 15 minutes ott for £100 a week.

TBH I have been known to take long showers (10-15mins) never 30mins though. I just enjoy long, hot showers but then I’m the homeowner so I can do what I want. Perhaps try and limit your shower to under 5-10 minutes to show some flexibility, I only know how long I shower as we got a new shower that had a sophisticated dial that told you the temp / time etc and I was alarmed I spent so long. I try and get it down to 5mins sometimes but always end up over. Probably spending too long shampooing my hair twice ☺️

Oh don't be so stupid, of course you can wash properly in 2 to 5 minutes. No one I know takes 15 to 30 minutes. That is ridiculous. How can you spend that long, what do you do?

@Fruitystones

I wash myself thoroughly. I couldn't imagine just letting the water glance over me for 2 minutes and thinking I was clean. Do you also think your kitchen is clean after two minutes? 🤢

@ManonDe · Today 18:44

It's a close run thing tbh but my body ain't as big as my kitchen.

😆PMSL!!!

@Fruitystones

Jeez. Maybe you'd have more time for basic hygiene if you spent less time on MN?

WOW, someone is a bit salty! Your comment is neither clever, nor funny. Not keen on @ManonDe outwitting you eh? Wink Awww, head tilt.....

YoureALizardHarry11 · 24/03/2024 22:48

I take 15 mins in the shower and I’m shocked at these responses, you can’t have a really good scrub and wash and condition your hair thoroughly in 4 mins, surely? 😦 is it competitive showering now? 🤣 mind you, I am disabled and take a bit longer to wash, but I also wash and condition my hair well and hate being rushed! My shower is relaxation time! I do think 30 mins is bad though!

Take a look at what your £400 would get you in your local area - would it even pay for a room in a shared house?

Does that cover your share of the energy bills/council tax/water and sewage/food and household supplies?

If you would prefer to move out and pay your own way entirely then do so.

I suspect if you did the maths you would find out that your parents are still subsidising you to live at home and therefore they can limit the amount of resources you are using - especially if you using them is preventing others from doing so.

YABU

Exactly this!

SabreIsMyFave · 24/03/2024 22:49

@MustWeDoThis

Please ignore the 5 minute scrubbers on this thread, OP. They can't have very good hygiene, or smell very nice, for very long. I'm thinking they've short, bristle like hair as well if it takes seconds to wash.

Fooking hell! 😆 This thread is the gift that keeps on giving. 😂 There are some utterly batshit comments. This is one of the batshittiest! If you only take 5 minutes to have a shower, you are clearly a hedgehog. Grin

anon666 · 24/03/2024 22:49

£100 a week is not a lot.

Also if there's one shower its not even the point. It's selfish to hog the bathroom at crucial times of day.

SocksAndTheCity · 24/03/2024 22:53

I had a fairly quick shower and washed my hair earlier when I got in, so for research purposes I timed it Smile

I admittedly didn't leave my conditioner on for as long as I normally do and I had a brisk scrub all over with soap and my loofah mitt rather than relaxing, but it took me seven minutes and sixteen seconds from getting in to getting out again. I washed my face before I got in, and I don't shave anything.

That makes me think my 'long' showers are unlikely to be more than ten minutes and my normal (no hair washing) ones are unlikely to be more than five, so fifteen minutes does seem like a long time to me.

Id say that's about settled it.

Well I know everybody's different, but it did make me think that if somebody was in the bathroom for twice the time I was and there were other people in the house, I'd consider that pretty inconsiderate.

Then again my rent and bills are well over £3K a month, so for 400 quid I'd be inclined to STFU and quit while I was ahead.

15 mins! 5 min showers are acceptable and little longer but not much if you need to wash your hair. Move out and see what the actual cost of living is.

You are coming off ungrateful and entitled... whoopy you 'contribute'

SydneyMamma · 25/03/2024 01:22

A long, hot shower is a wonderful luxury but not practical when there's a family of six and people need to manage their expenditure. I understand you wanting to shower every day and that's fine but you will need to compromise in order to keep the peace. Can you turn off the water whilst actually washing and especially when applying shampoo or conditioner, combing your hair or anything that you need to do that doesn't require water running, and turn the water back on only when rinsing? That's what I do and it makes me quicker as I'm not luxuriating under the hot water.

Is the issue also the hour of the day which you're showering and could that be affecting the other family members' bathroom access, or possibly the amount of hot water available if a tank is involved? If so, then look at what time you're showering and change accordingly so as to cause less disruption to the rest of the family.

EasterBunnny · 24/03/2024 19:20

An en-suite double room in my area, Warwickshire, all bills included would cost you around £650 per month

An ensuite room would cost £850 plus where I live (non posh South England).

But the OP isn't renting a room in a house share - she is living at home which is very different. My daughter and son in law have just moved in with us for the next year or so; they will be buying their own food because they eat a completely different diet from us but I wouldn't dream of charging them anything to live with us because the extra cost to us will be minimal.

SydneyMamma · 25/03/2024 01:37

As you've said you have a gym membership, take advantage of the shower facilities and have a shower at the gym at least a few times a week. Keep a set of your shower products in your gym bag (and wear flip flops in the shower.) If the gym provides towels for showering you won't have to worry about taking a towel, but if not, swap your towel for a clean one as soon as you get home from the gym so that you're always ready to go.

Can you up the amount you pay your parents?

If you can't afford to pay more than the £100 per week you're currently paying, ask your parents if there are some extra things you could do to help out at home, e.g. cook the family meal one night a week. Your parents may feel less inclined to give you a hard time if you're helping out a little more. I do understand that you're studying and also working full-time but you should be able to find some time to earn some goodwill. :)

Haven’t read the full thread, just first couple of pages.

Just want to register my astonishment at people thinking a 15minute shower is excessive. Admittedly I shower 4-5 times a week rather than every day, but when I do I think 15 mins is absolutely average. My shortest shower wouldn’t be leas than 7-10 mins, how anyone can have a thorough shower in 3mins baffles me!

brentwoods · 25/03/2024 01:44

Wow, entitled much? You sound really self centered. Try moving out on your $100/week and see where that gets you.

Credit to you for taking it on the chin OP. I'm glad you appreciate your mum.

@SabreIsMyFave You seem to be projecting a bit. I wasn't trying to be funny, or clever. I was stating my opinion. I don't get salty about strangers on the internet.

Your excessive quoting on this reply wasn't funny or clever either. And you were actually attempting to be those things.

Vevevoom · 25/03/2024 04:31

I won’t be surprised if they ask you to move out. It’s so selfish and wasteful to shower for that long.

You would ask your own child to move out for taking a few minutes longer than you want in the shower.
This place is bonkers.

Oh please. Don’t deliberately misinterpret me. The parents may feel aggrieved by this inconsiderate behavior towards everyone else in the home.
if you were to live elsewhere , this behaviour would not be tolerated by the housemates and the cost would be way higher.
being considerate costs nothing.

I don't just let the water run over me (why would it glance?). I put some shower gel on a scrunchy and then wash myself. I am not small but it doesn't take long the scrub my whole body as I don't do it in slow motion.

Of course I am clean as is my kitchen although that takes me far longer to clean

Some people don't do everything in the shower. They just get in, wash, rinse, and get out. Especially when it is every day. 10 minutes would seem like a good, everyday amount. I also think that the OP is underestimating their actual time in the shower.

AmIEnough · 25/03/2024 07:46

If you consider the amount of water you are using, if you’re in the shower for 15 minutes, it’s a hell of a lot! You could be in and out of the shower in three or four minutes. Like others have said if you want to spend 15 minutes in the shower move out and then you can do what you like, £100 per week is actually very vital in this day and age unfortunately And I’m afraid you are in my house, my rules situation here

Unless you were being melodramatic?

Floofydawg · 25/03/2024 08:00

My daughter used to shower for bloody ages when she lived at home. I used to ask her to take less time. She now has her own place with a lodger who likes half hour showers and she's constantly on at them. Funny how when it's your bathroom which is getting mouldy, and your water bills, you care a lot more!
