To think for £100 a week to live at home I can have a shower every day?

tryinghere · 23/03/2024 10:58

I live at home, I work f/t and I'm doing an online course. I pay £100 a week contribution and I am moaned at for spending about 15 minutes a day in the shower.
Admittedly one day I was in there half an hour and accepted that I was in there a long time, I was asked to be more considerate and I did, but, I have reduced it to 15 minutes a day and that's still too long.
Apparently it's not necessary to be in there that long and the rest of the family make sacrifices and go without only showering every other day and using sink and flannel in between, I hate this.

My parents don't have a lot of money but they do have 4 children and my mum chooses to stay at home meaning she chooses that we make sacrifices.
As the oldest, I'm the only one paying my way and don't feel it's unreasonable to shower for 15 minutes a day.
I get my parents choose not to so they can save money but I pay them a lot.
Do I stand my ground on this one and shower away or is 15 minutes ott for £100 a week.

Ah, I’m currently wallowing in an environmentally unfriendly boiling hot bath and this thread is LIFE!

What joy such a thread can bring on a Sunday afternoon.

Thank you all!

Timed myself in the shower this morning, out of curiosity - 16 minutes, disregarding the three minutes for it to warm up, which I spent brushing my teeth and hair.

I got in, thoroughly wet my hair, shampood and massaged my scalp, rinsed the shampoo and out, conditioned and combed my hair, clipped my hair up, exfoliated my body, washed my body, rinsed the conditioner out, moisturised my body with a shower oil bar, shaved my underarms, washed my face.

By 5 minutes into the shower, I was only just rinsing the shampoo out of my hair. Unless people have very thin/short hair or just aren't washing it, I can't imagine how anyone gets clean in 5 minutes or less.

What is wrong with your shower? Confused You need to get an electrician in. A typical shower should take about 15-20 seconds to 'heat up the water.' It's virtually instantaneous in most cases. 3 minutes to heat up the water? WTF?

Also, the amount of stuff you do in the shower is totally OTT. You moisturise your body while the water is pouring over you?! Confused What the ???

Claiming 16 minutes is a normal amount of time for a shower is a new level of batshit. 👀

Edited

That routine sounds normal to me, I'm usually in the shower for 10-15 minutes, 20 if I wash my hair and shave my legs the same day. My shower takes a while to heat up when the heating isn't on and there's nothing wrong with it, it's just how it is.

clarehhh · 24/03/2024 17:44

£100 will be only £50 left for everything else after food. Really not much at all. Look at cost of a house share locally and you will realise you are on a very reduced rate.Agree you only need 8 mins in shower.

Mum0fb0yz · 24/03/2024 17:44

Firstly would say your mum chose to stay at home because to raise 4 children, please think about what she has sacrificed to do that, sacrifices she made to make sure she was there for you and your siblings.

Was also say £400 really isn't a lot, pay more than that a month in food shopping.
would say daily showers are unnecessary and aren't very good for your skin, every other day is more that fine. 15 mins every other days and 5 mins in between would be better. 4 siblings and 2 parents is 6 people sharing a bathroom, to take if for 20 mins per day is perhaps being a little selfish.

Okay, I didn't think it was excessive but I don't know how long people take on average.

I dont think it's excessive! I love a long shower gathering my thoughts and relaxing, part of my night time routine 😊

Blueink · 24/03/2024 18:00

It would be helpful to reorganise your routine to mainly shower at the gym OP.

Agree with PP 15m is a long time for a shower (3 mins is more typical) and you’re doing this daily, when the rest of the family are having much shorter and alternate daily showers.

£100 is not much and even includes your evening meal. Would consider it a nominal/token amount rather than a real contribution to household bills.

Greenshed · 24/03/2024 18:08

15 mins in the shower each day? Too long.
Hope your parents aren’t on a water meter.
£100 per week? Not enough, especially if it’s meant to cover bills and food. You’d need a lot more than that if you lived in your own place.

Havinganamechange · 24/03/2024 18:10

Clearly I’m extravagant as I like to have a nice long shower. I have two a day but the morning one is quicker as I’m in a rush. Not sure either of them are less than 15 minutes though. But I pay the bills so guess I can shower for as long as I want to.

Mantissatopower4 · 24/03/2024 18:12

An electric shower could easily use over a couple of kWh of electricity in that time. The cost could be an extra £300 a year. Are you stopping others from using the bathroom?

You can't need to shave underarms every day. I switch on water instantly hot. Get in get hair wet and shampoo. Rinse shampoo out, put conditioner on. Switch the shower off whole I lather my body. Switch back on to rinse water and conditioner off. Took me 8 mins and about 2 of those mins water was switched off. I only wash my long hair every third day. Without hair washing it takes me a maximum 5 mins to shower. I don't have time to spend up to half an hour day dreaming in the shower.

Justontherightsideofnormal · 24/03/2024 18:21

15 minutes?! What on earth are you doing in those 15 minutes?!

Fruitystones · 24/03/2024 18:24

suburburban · 24/03/2024 12:28

@Fruitystones

Don't have that sort of time in morning if working

More like 5-10 mins, don't do hair everyday.

I wash with shower puff, body wash and soap. Feel very clean

I do my bath in the evening. If I shower and it's not hair day, I just get up a little earlier 🤷🏽‍♀️

Heyhoitsme · 24/03/2024 18:28

It takes me five minutes to shower and wash my hair. DH is about the same. I'd be bored standing there for any longer.

StressedOutButProudMama · 24/03/2024 18:28

£100 a week doesn't go far I can assure you. As for your mum staying at home been a choice to make sacrifices. That is just damned entitled. Your mum made sacrifices so you and your siblings would be looked after. My mum was a stay at home mum and she had 7 but she was always there. That's not a choice to go without, a lot of kids with working aor.ets.miss a lot of interaction from thier parents. I wouldn't dream of coming out with a comment about my mum like that. It's self entitled and privileged. As for showers I love a long shower but when I lived at home we shared a bath some nights and when we did have a shower it was literally in and out or we would have an all over body wash and I was paying £100 a week back in the 90's (That's the equivalent of £285 today according to inflation) but I still respected the fact money wasn't easily come by and would give more when I could afford. I still do even though I live separate with my own fanily. I now have hour long hit soaks in the bath but I pay my own bills and can do that. Any of your younger siblings do pay their way because until they are of working age they get benefits from child benefit, tax credits etc and until they are 18 and working, no longer in full education their upkeep is your parents responsibility, yours isn't.
Try getting a little bedsit or flat and see how much £100 lasts in a week.
I mean just based on general prices in cheaper parts of Britain.
Rent would be £130-£140 a week
Gas & Electric would be £120 week
Average Water Rates £9.00 week
Then you have council tax, phone bill, internet and any other luxuries before you even think about food and hygiene and cleaning products.
You wouldn't last long on that so no you don't have the right to a 15 minute shower every day until you pay the bills in full.

Fruitystones · 24/03/2024 18:32

mydogisthebest · 24/03/2024 08:06

Oh don't be so stupid, of course you can wash properly in 2 to 5 minutes. No one I know takes 15 to 30 minutes. That is ridiculous. How can you spend that long, what do you do?

I wash myself thoroughly. I couldn't imagine just letting the water glance over me for 2 minutes and thinking I was clean. Do you also think your kitchen is clean after two minutes? 🤢

ManonDe · 24/03/2024 18:44

It's a close run thing tbh but my body aint as big as my kitchen.

I spend 5-10 mins in the shower Inc hair washing and conditioning etc. Not daily and I pay the bills.
I don't think you quite realise your parents are doing you a favour, allowing you to live there for a smallish contribution while you are working and studying? They are probably trying to help you out, knowing how expensive it is to live independently as a young person.
Cut them some slack. Have shorter showers, help them out in other ways when you can.
You're doing well on your route to full adulthood but try to appreciate your nearest and dearest who are helping you do it.

Sennelier1 · 24/03/2024 18:59

I shower every day, wash my hair every day, use different soaps for different parts of my....ahum....personality. Still, I'm in and out of the shower in between 5 and 8 minutes. I think 15 minutes is exessive indeed.

EveryonesMother · 24/03/2024 19:03

goodness. In a minority here but I would never expect my child/children to pay £400 to live at home. My children have a home for as long as they need and i would sell my soul to provide for them for however long it took for them to be independant. I have friends whose children give £200 per month and buy their own food.
My son showers for a loooong time, its only an issue if it making us late but otherwise its still cheaper and shorter than a bath and I am glad hes a clean teenager. Thank heaven for small mercies.

MayNov · 24/03/2024 19:07

An en-suite double room in my area, Warwickshire, all bills included would cost you around £650 per month. If you’re already paying £400 per month, perhaps you could add another £200 and look for a share house with all bills included? I don’t think a 15 min shower is too long btw, and I have a feeling that if you moved your monthly contribution will be missed in spite of all that water consumption. I don’t understand what people have against young adults nowadays. We spend so many years giving daily baths to our babies and toddlers, but once they’re fully grown and paying for their keep - a daily 15 min shower is inconsiderate.

Lainie · 24/03/2024 19:09

sit down with your mum and write a list of what she has to pay out like rent/mortgage, water rates , council tax , shopping , electric and gas and work out how much it would cost to live alone. (just so you see what gets paid behind the scene) also work out the cost of a 15 minute shower and offer more money if you really NEED to have one every day x

EasterBunnny · 24/03/2024 19:20

An ensuite room would cost £850 plus where I live (non posh South England).

Tahlullah · 24/03/2024 19:30

You aren’t paying much, I used to pay my mum £175 a month in the 90s when I earned about £9k.

15 min shower every day is crazy! I’m probably 5 mins a day max. But longer when I wash and condition my long hair.

why do you need to be in there 15 mins daily?
