To think for £100 a week to live at home I can have a shower every day?

tryinghere · 23/03/2024 10:58

I live at home, I work f/t and I'm doing an online course. I pay £100 a week contribution and I am moaned at for spending about 15 minutes a day in the shower.
Admittedly one day I was in there half an hour and accepted that I was in there a long time, I was asked to be more considerate and I did, but, I have reduced it to 15 minutes a day and that's still too long.
Apparently it's not necessary to be in there that long and the rest of the family make sacrifices and go without only showering every other day and using sink and flannel in between, I hate this.

My parents don't have a lot of money but they do have 4 children and my mum chooses to stay at home meaning she chooses that we make sacrifices.
As the oldest, I'm the only one paying my way and don't feel it's unreasonable to shower for 15 minutes a day.
I get my parents choose not to so they can save money but I pay them a lot.
Do I stand my ground on this one and shower away or is 15 minutes ott for £100 a week.

Are u all double amputees or something how are you all shaving 2 legs, pits and bits. Shampooing twice then conditioner which is supposed to stay in a few minutes before rinsing and also washing your whole body in 2 minutes 🤔

Do people really shave every day?? I shave about once a month in winter, or if I have a medical appointment. I also only do it in the bath, I can’t bend down long enough these days to do it in the shower. 😃 I wash my hair once (daily) but don’t condition as my hair is very short.

I shave most days

Yes. I hate having any stubble.

SocksAndTheCity · 23/03/2024 21:39

I don't wash my hair every time I have a shower; a couple of times a week is fine. And I don't shave anything, so a good all over wash is easily done in a couple of minutes.

Being able to actually enjoy the shower is not though, and I like having a bit more time to do that Smile

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 23/03/2024 21:43

@NotSayingImBatman dont be ridiculous!
5 minutes in the shower is plenty.

And yes my adult kids visit!

OneFrenchEgg · 23/03/2024 21:47

I hate the argument that parents managed fine before - I expected my kids to move out and I'd be able to save, not top up a load of adults so they can save/spend money on themselves

mumda · 23/03/2024 21:49

What are you doing in the shower that takes so long?

Is there only one bathroom? If there's two does it mean no one else can run the water or flush the loo because you'd get scalded?

Don't be a hog. Move out and see how the real world will treat you.

I want them to save so they can move out, hopefully buy a property

OneFrenchEgg · 23/03/2024 22:15

Yeah me too but the argument that it was fine before doesn't wash. I lived in bed sits and house shares, mine seem to want to hold on until it's perfect - being independent doesn't seem as important

DorisDoesDoncaster · 23/03/2024 22:17

What are you doing in there for 15 minutes? I’m genuinely intrigued! I’d be bored out of my mind.

Many parents didn't anticipate that their dc would still be living with them well into adulthood.
OP's parents have 4 dc that's a lot of adults to continue to pay for or even substitise, especially if they're not financially comfortable themselves and trying to save for their own retirement.

OneFrenchEgg · 23/03/2024 22:21

@bodminbeast yeah that's my point. A previous pp said how the parents had managed before - what are we meant to do? Keep paying til they are 40? Do I get my 75 year old mum to pay up seeing as how she used to fund me?

Why on earth would you be shaving your underarms and legs every day? Also no need to shampoo twice, once is fine.

Of course you can wash your whole body in 2 minutes unless you are literally the size of an elephant

Spectre8 · 23/03/2024 21:29

Might explain why there are so many smelly peolle about if they aren't taking time to wash themselves properly

I can't understand why some posters think it takes so long to wash properly. Shower gel on a scrunchy then wash feet, legs, front, back, each arm, neck and face. Just how long does that take unless you do it in slow motion?

Crass thing to say when you don’t know OP’s age.

Well done for oiling on though.

😂

ThinWomansBrain · 23/03/2024 22:56

sounds as if she should choose for you to move out - why should she sacrifice anything to live with a selfish entitled adult?

Wash face
Use exfoliating scrub
Shampoo
Rinse
Apply conditioner
Shave legs and pits
Rinse conditioner

chuggachug · 23/03/2024 23:02

@mydogisthebest
It also takes my shower about 4 mins to get to temperature.

Because I don't like to be hairy and shampooing twice is important

4 mins for shower to get to temperature. It takes this long to get stable. I'm not in it but it is running
A good minute getting in and standing there whilst water runs over my hair, face getting all warm and wet (1min)
Face wash, thorough rinse then Face scrub, thorough rinse (1.5 min)
Shampoo + rinse (1 min)
Squeeze out water
Conditioner, combs through (30sec)
Soapy clean whole body (1min)
Shave legs (1min)
Rinse conditioner thoroughly (long hair 1 min)
All the picking up and opening bottles and putting them down and squeezing out soap from sponge takes another good minute

That's 12 min for me. Some people may not have to wait 4 mins to hear but there is always a bit of time. Sometimes longer. Then if I have to shave lady bits that takes forever. Genuinely ages. Easily 15 mins total if doing that if not easily 10

Mayana1 · 23/03/2024 23:17

Ok, it probably does take me 15 min or so when washing my hair, but the water is not on the whole time. When I'm not washing my hair, I probably take 5 min. Needless to say I have a 2 year old and can only take a shower when he is either with daddy or in a deep sleep. And even then he will probably wake up and ask for me. I wish I could take a 15 min shower...

To answer some of the questions.

I am 23, I don't earn very much 24k which is why I'm studying and living at home.
We do have a separate toilet so nobody is waiting outside.
I get an evening meal but I buy lunch at work.

I don't think I'm better than my mum and I take back that comment, I just meant that it doesn't help that one parent working means we have less money, I do respect my parents I just wondered if they were being fair.
Some of my friends live at home and pay way less, I just wanted opinions.
If I sound ungrateful, I am apologise I am really not.

24k is a decent wage in a lot of the U.K. and £400pm especially with that income like others have said is extremely cheap.

Let’s say average cost of a 3 bed with 2 parents and 3kids.
Electric/Gas: £150pm
Council Tax; £113pm
Water; 50pm
Buildings/Contents insurance; £30pm
Internet; 50pm

Also do they pay for your food? For a family of 5 the average food shop is £150 a week! That’s £650 a month.

= £1,043pm on just the day to day running of the family with no extras.
Then add on the cost of rent/mortgage .. where I live you’re looking at £1,200pm for a 3 bed with a garden and parking.

£2,243pm…

Other costs to consider..

  • streaming services? Disney/Netflix/Now Tv; £35pm aprox for just 3.
  • tv licence £13pm
  • Mobile phones
  • Travel costs- Tax, mot, fuel, insurance, maintenance.

Of course wouldn’t expect them to charge you for their life insurances but they could be paying that on top to. If you have pets there’s vet fees, insurances, food, medication.

Again not for you to pay but they also have theirs and your siblings(potentially depending on age) needs to pay for (ie clothing, shoes, hair, toiletries), activities, appliance break downs, family days out, debts, takeaways.. etc.

£400 is a ripple in the water these days.

xx

Sparsely · 24/03/2024 00:00

£2243 per month for 5 people is £448 per person per month. Not that far off what the OP is paying. I wouldn't expect her to have to subsidise her siblings.

I'm being unfair by generalising skin colour, I should have said modern westernised people.
