To think for £100 a week to live at home I can have a shower every day?

tryinghere · 23/03/2024 10:58

I live at home, I work f/t and I'm doing an online course. I pay £100 a week contribution and I am moaned at for spending about 15 minutes a day in the shower.
Admittedly one day I was in there half an hour and accepted that I was in there a long time, I was asked to be more considerate and I did, but, I have reduced it to 15 minutes a day and that's still too long.
Apparently it's not necessary to be in there that long and the rest of the family make sacrifices and go without only showering every other day and using sink and flannel in between, I hate this.

My parents don't have a lot of money but they do have 4 children and my mum chooses to stay at home meaning she chooses that we make sacrifices.
As the oldest, I'm the only one paying my way and don't feel it's unreasonable to shower for 15 minutes a day.
I get my parents choose not to so they can save money but I pay them a lot.
Do I stand my ground on this one and shower away or is 15 minutes ott for £100 a week.

I’ve skimmed but am boggling at the people who can stand in a shower for 30 minutes. WTF are you doing in all that time?

Same. I reckon my average time is about five minutes.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 23/03/2024 20:05

I live in the South West, i remember my shock when moving from London years ago and the water rates were £12 and they became £50 !!! we went straight onto a water meter.

My average quarter bill is £150 and on a water meter.

OneFrenchEgg · 23/03/2024 20:14

Mine pays £250 which covers their chosen diet as well. We would save on water, heating and electricity if they weren't here as well as having a bigger room available for the younger one trapped in a box room.
I resent the 30 min showers and have restricted them to five minutes each (they shower twice a day) as we are on a water meter and costs are through the roof with six of us. I have very short showers and find I compensate for the adult kids by not using as much water, sitting in the cold, etc etc.

"Thinking," was DD's reply to that question when I asked her. She once stayed in the shower so long that she fainted from heat exhaustion. She still stayed in the shower. Her sister had to forcibly remove her from the bathroom when she fainted a second time and cracked her forehead on the sink Hmm

My DD is the same! She stays in there so long and has the water so hot that when she gets out she’s covered from head to toe in hives. She sits down on the shower tray because she gets too dizzy to stand up, and stays there for about half an hour. It’s bizarre!

I tell her to limit her showers, but it’s not even because of the cost. It’s because I worry about her fainting, and also because I’m the one constantly having to scrub the black mould from the bathroom ceiling.

How indulgent and wasteful of you.

I just wait for it to rain then pop outside.

I find a barrel under a down pipe useful when there’s no rain.

£250 a week or month?

OneFrenchEgg · 23/03/2024 20:18

A month

I think OP feels living in the family home she should be treated better than a lodger , and she should . Timing someone in the shower is petty and unreasonable.
Your kids should feel comfortable in their own home .
Having said that 15 mins in the shower is a long time but if that's what it takes that's what it takes .

Sod everyone else in the house, eh?

likepebblesonabeach · 23/03/2024 20:22

I was all set to pull you up for what you said about your mum, it really wasn't nice and also a 15 mins shower is excessive but I see you've read the responses and taken them on board and acknowledged YABU well done op

Crochetablanket · 23/03/2024 20:26

I think you’ve had some unfair comments op.
And FWIW I don’t think 15 mins is excessive really ( even though some take a shorter time !)
I can’t imagine timing how long my DC stay in the shower it feels petty, but I suppose all family dynamics are different .

woahboy · 23/03/2024 20:29

@Mountainclimber50

OP berates her DM for her choices in life. It’s not about profit it’s about basic respect. OP has non for her own DM.
My comment is clearly in response to the comments that it would cost more than £100pw to live in a flat. Why are you responding to my comment about something else?

AmethystSparkles · 23/03/2024 20:31

I disagree with most of these posters OP. Although it depends on whether you have a combi boiler or a tank. If it’s a tank and you’re using all the water then you’re being unreasonable but if not then I don’t think fifteen minutes is particularly excessive. That’s how long it takes me if I’m washing my hair. If I’m not then I probably only spend 5-10 minutes and some of that is cold (Wim Hof fan🤣).

I can understand why you’d be annoyed at paying £100 a week and still being moaned at about having a shower. That depends on how much your food costs though. I actually live with my mother (at the age of 51 - don’t ask!!) but I buy my own food because I have expensive tastes.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 23/03/2024 20:34

15 mins?? What are you doing in there 😅 and 30 mins is absolutely bonkers.

Wetblanket78 · 23/03/2024 20:34

Does the £100 PW include council tax? With 2 working adults in the house council tax increases. So you should really be paying the towards that as well.

Op refers to her father working. I'm aware of a single occupier discount if OP's mum was single, but which councils offer a discount for one worker in an adult couple?

Deleted as read that you have taken comments on board.

I'm just struggling to understand how it takes 15 minutes to have a shower!?

Amazing. So far, you're the only person to pose this question.

peachesarenom · 23/03/2024 20:44

Definitely have a shower everyday!!!

I don't know what the first page of posters are on about!

Life is made up of small pleasures, I really love a long shower, enjoy yourself!

Your parents managed before your £100 a week, I'm sure you should stand your ground, but perhaps be considerate about time of day given there are 6 people living in the house.

Read the OP properly, it’s the length of the shower that is being criticised, no one is trying to prevent the OP from
showering daily 🙄

Ilovemyshed · 23/03/2024 21:11

What on earth do you do jn the shower for 15 minutes? My shower takes a minute or so to warm up the water, step in, lather up, shave legs etc, wash hair, condition hair, good rinse and stand for a bit and I'm still out in 6 mins. Without shaving, its 4-5 tops.

facepalmdaily · 23/03/2024 21:18

15 minute showers are a piss take and totally unnecessary. You're only doing it because you think that you're paying too much and want to rinse your parents for as much as possible in my opinion!

Username checks out.

Differentstarts · 23/03/2024 21:28

Are u all double amputees or something how are you all shaving 2 legs, pits and bits. Shampooing twice then conditioner which is supposed to stay in a few minutes before rinsing and also washing your whole body in 2 minutes 🤔

Spectre8 · 23/03/2024 21:29

Might explain why there are so many smelly peolle about if they aren't taking time to wash themselves properly
