To think for £100 a week to live at home I can have a shower every day?

tryinghere · 23/03/2024 10:58

I live at home, I work f/t and I'm doing an online course. I pay £100 a week contribution and I am moaned at for spending about 15 minutes a day in the shower.
Admittedly one day I was in there half an hour and accepted that I was in there a long time, I was asked to be more considerate and I did, but, I have reduced it to 15 minutes a day and that's still too long.
Apparently it's not necessary to be in there that long and the rest of the family make sacrifices and go without only showering every other day and using sink and flannel in between, I hate this.

My parents don't have a lot of money but they do have 4 children and my mum chooses to stay at home meaning she chooses that we make sacrifices.
As the oldest, I'm the only one paying my way and don't feel it's unreasonable to shower for 15 minutes a day.
I get my parents choose not to so they can save money but I pay them a lot.
Do I stand my ground on this one and shower away or is 15 minutes ott for £100 a week.

then of course someone can't be in the shower with the door locked for half an hour.

She did this once 🙄

You sound selfish and entitled. 15 minutes in the shower? Disgusting waste.

You sound unhinged!

YesTonightJosephine · 23/03/2024 14:45

Hello @tryinghere ,

YANBU

Just wanted to let you know that 15 minute showers are the norm in our house and we often have 2 a day!

We do not feel that is excessive at all!

Cracks me up cos rushing to be done in 5 mins in a slippery shower wont cause an accident and wont cause anyone to be stuck there for hours rather than minutes while waiting for the ambulance. 🙄

I have got two rubbish knees and am old and still don't need 15 minutes to shower

Maybe would cover utilities and council tax but not rent, food and a full time housekeeper.

That's because she's living at home, with her family and not some rental.
Although obviously, to some people that doesn't count.

We don’t charge our children , we expect them to save but that is irrelevant here . The OP may well be studying but she also has a job which pays reasonably and unless there is a massive drip feed it sounds like her family are and always have been hard up . Comments should be based on the facts the OP has given , not based on what you would do in your own home with your own financial circumstances.

Yes. Mine is 7 - 8 minutes. 15 minutes I total, including j dressing, drying, moisturising & tidying up.

People on this thread are insane with the outrage at 15 whole minutes.

It's bizarre! Plus who bloody well times their own kids in the shower?!

I completely agree. So strange

YesTonightJosephine · 23/03/2024 14:49

And YES to what @Yuckyyuckyuckity and @penjil said too!

I too do not understand 5' showers either!

And FYI we do not have a car so we feel pretty good about our 'green' credentials!

Stand your ground?
You need to be on your own ground first.

GreatGateauxsby · 23/03/2024 14:53

The simpliest way to solve this is as follows

Ask how long they think is reasonable?
5 mins per day for example.

calculate the difference eg. 10mins
Then calculate the kw used eg. kw for a 10min shower...
Translate that to cost based on gas charges
Lets say its 20p for a 10min shower
20p x 7 = £1.40

Say you'll pay £101.40 per week and are glad you can consider it resolved.

If they still want to be awkward your options are:

  • Gym membership and shower at gym
  • Move out
  • Shower less / shower faster
EmpressOfTheThread · 23/03/2024 14:54

Are these 5 minute showers like the fabled MN chicken which serves 20?

Is this serious or sarcastic? I genuinely can't tell

I don't shower, I use the leftover fat from one of those chickens to make my own soap, then use that along with a flannel and a thimble of water.

Do I win mumsnet?

It’s very dependant on water pressure. My shower at home is a bit rubbish and I’m in for ages. The one at work is super powerful and I can rinse out shampoo/ conditioner in under a minute.

VanGoghsDog · 23/03/2024 15:00

Well, I think fifteen minutes is about right if you're washing your hair. Maybe five if not. But on Mumsnet everyone takes zero time in the shower and yet has supreme standards of hygiene.

I worked out that with a gas combi boiler my shower costs about fifty pence. So maybe offer to increase your rent by £5 a week to cover your showers?

Unfortunately though, it's their house and even though you pay you're bound by their requirements.

Maddy70 · 23/03/2024 15:01

I wash my hair and shave . Exfoliate etc in about 5 minutes.

The bathroom would be full of steam and mould if it was any longer. Are others also waiting for the bathroom in that time?

The water meter and heating costs need to be consider too

FlowerBarrow · 23/03/2024 15:02

@tryinghere I think your whole approach is a bit entitled. £24k is more than enough to live away from home (as a lodger or house share at least), so £100 a week all in is very favourable.
I suspect part of the problem is your ferr we long that you’re entitled to this, I’m pretty sure there will be other ways in which you aren’t pulling your weight as an equal partner in the home.

Animatic · 23/03/2024 15:09

tryinghere · 23/03/2024 11:05

Okay, I didn't think it was excessive but I don't know how long people take on average.

If I wash hair then not less than 20 mins, otherwise around 10 mins. But then sometimes I feel like standing under hot water for longer, say if didn't have a good night sleep or feel tired or whatever other reasons. I have just never been in a situation where shower time is dictated that way, nor would I imagine to dictate it myself.

You certainly do - but only if you don't use a handbag of any sort, just a Lidl carrier bag, and you only wash your sheets every four weeks.

Patrickiscrazy · 23/03/2024 15:10

DillySorbet · 23/03/2024 13:38

This!

Exactly. Surely, the "entitlement" to wash yourself with dignity and be left the F alone is not that much???
I wonder how some PPs do it, five minutes in a shower.
Personally, my husband and I take baths.
Horribly entitled.
🙄

NotSayingImBatman · 23/03/2024 12:01

Everyone on here is insane. 15 minutes to shower per day is completely acceptable and £100/week board paid to the people who chose to bring you into the world is more than enough. I’m convinced mumsnet is full of the kind of parents who will be asking themselves in years to come why their children never visit them.

Grow up @NotSayingImBatman.

mydogisthebest · 23/03/2024 15:13

15 minutes! What on earth do you do in there? I wash my hair in the shower every day and take 4 minutes. That is plenty of time to wash thoroughly.
