Being called Mrs *-*

LorlieS · 23/03/2024 00:00

I'm married and a Ms My Last Name - His Last Name (hubby also double-barrelled when we married).
So why do so many people insist on addressing me as a Mrs?! AIBU to be annoyed by this?

Well you're married so it would be Mrs. You've decided to change the norm and say you're a Ms, but people aren't going to know that.

I hardly think they are all doing it to spite you - it’s generally not very commonly used and people aren’t used to it. Just correct them and move or get used to it. Or you are going to be very angry for the rest of your career.

But it is commonly used. Admittedly the majority of my friends are Mrs (and I find that bizarre) but a significant minority use Ms.

ElinoristhenewEnid · 23/03/2024 06:36

Actually I find Ms irritating and hate being referred to as Ms.

When the title first appeared 50 or so years ago it was seen as being used by a female with a 'dodgy' background re relationships

Appreciate males never have this problem!

concernedchild · 23/03/2024 06:36

But you are a Mrs. Like it or not

Tetsuo · 23/03/2024 06:42

concernedchild · 23/03/2024 06:36

Wrong!

I'm married but not a Mrs.

I have the surname I was born with and am a Ms.

It's not until women do things differently that things change. I'm not Mrs anyone. Don't presume to call me that. You will be corrected (nicely).

LolaSmiles · 23/03/2024 06:43

I get called Miss and Ms instead of Mrs all the time by parents. It’s never occurred to me to care.
Same here, or Mum. I had sir on a few occasions, which was funny.
Most teachers don't make this a hill to die on.

MassageForLife · 23/03/2024 06:45

I've never been married, and I've lost count of the number of times I've been called Mrs. I've been a Ms for a long, long time. Not because I've had a dodgy relationship background. Purely because I refuse to be defined by my marital status for things where it just doesn't matter. If people want to assume I'm diverted or whatever, I don't care. That's on them.

It does come in handy when you get scam or sales calls. 'sorry, there's no Mrs Smith here'.

concernedchild · 23/03/2024 06:45

@Tetsuo you can try to make a stand, but at the end of the day, you're married so you're a Mrs. Imagine feeling a strongly about something so insignificant

Nonsense.

Women have the right to choose how they are referred to after their marriage. They don't have to choose Mrs.

Tetsuo · 23/03/2024 06:49

I'm not sure OP is making it a 'hill to die on', more firmly expressing her preferred title. Why is that a bad thing? Why should women be defined by their marital status and why are they seen as some kind of weird radicals when they ask not to be?

Bloody hell, you'd be chased out of town for using incorrect pronouns in an educational setting but Women's titles are 'whatever' (you silly bint).

LorlieS · 23/03/2024 00:31

@WhateverMate I work in a huge primary with many other women, most of whom are also married. I'm literally the only one who isn't a Mrs. Nearly everyone therefore (pupils and parents) refers to female members of staff (especially over a cetain age) as Mrs X.

This is funny I'm on a c of E school and EVERYONE calls me Ms reliably. They correct themselves if they say Mrs. To the point I feel like saying 'alright everyone it's not that big a deal I'm not married!' I guess people can't win 😂

It's not insignificant, and I'm not Mrs anyone.

I am Ms me!

coffeenomore · 23/03/2024 06:51

I find it incredibly annoying

Tetsuo · 23/03/2024 06:52

I mean, my passport and all official documents clearly state that I am Ms Testsuo.

So why are you insisting that I'm not?

Sugargliderwombat · 23/03/2024 06:52

Oh by the way op I do think it matters, it's your name and people should call people the right bloody name!

I would be correcting but I do think start with the children.

TurquoiseDress · 23/03/2024 06:53

LittleGreenDragons · 23/03/2024 00:13

Women have four* possible titles compared to a man's one. If you don't tell them your preferred title then of course they are going to assume the traditional married one.

  • Miss, Mrs, Ms or Mx.

The title Dr is one of those options too, depending on profession/qualifications

It's not insignificant. There's so much bias in the use of Miss and Mrs the more people that use Ms the better. Even worse is when women are dr and people assume they are male

LorlieS · 23/03/2024 00:18

@InWalksBarberalla Parents. Constantly. I'm a teacher.

I hate that teachers are called by their title anyway. What is a better way?

helpfulperson · 23/03/2024 06:57

What do the children call you? Because that is what the parents will use.

AllTheMiniEggs · 23/03/2024 06:59

I was a Miss, then a Mrs. Then I got divorced, went back to my maiden name and went back to being a Miss.

Everyone refers to me as Mrs. Literally everyone. I used to correct them but now I just accept it. I'm 49. I must just look like I'm a Mrs (but hearing Mrs MiniEggs still makes me think of my mum and grandma)🤷‍♀️

coffeenomore · 23/03/2024 06:54

And Rev

Ooh and Lady, Dame, Her Honour, Professor.

misseckleburg · 23/03/2024 07:00

I'm a recently married teacher. It really bothers me that I'm 2024 female teachers are distinguishable by their marital status - but men obviously aren't! Can't see it changing any time soon as soon many women embrace it (fair enough I guess) but it does reek of sexism if you think about it.
