Bringing baked goods into work

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:03

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

I don’t like the habit of cake/biscuits in the office, and absolutely hate it when someone brings it in and there’s a pressure to have some as a ‘treat’.

It’s not a treat for me and I’m fat enough from the crisps and cheese I do enjoy.

So OP I would find your endless supply of cakes a bit tiresome if I’m honest but a) you sound lovely and I’m sure your other colleagues enjoy them and b) even if you weren’t lovely I would never ever say anything because you and others are enjoying it!

What an absolute pair of misery guts, it's not your fault she can't resist temptation! Tell her to get on her bike!

ABwithAnItch · 22/03/2024 20:16

reading this thread has made me desperate for cake, dammit

Elderflower14 · 22/03/2024 20:18

I baked cake for my colleagues during lockdown and took them into work every week. They loved them
... ☺ ☺

ThinWomansBrain · 22/03/2024 20:20

i think you need to change jobs.
come and work in my office.

Failing that, organise a charity bake sale, that'll wind them up.

HesterRoon · 22/03/2024 20:21

I’m not a massive cake fan so wouldn’t partake but I think it’s a bit of fun when life can be miserable so crack on! Surely those women can just not eat it rather than making a big thing of it?

HesterRoon · 22/03/2024 20:23

What I would say is that I find it really tiresome when people try to pressure you into eating stuff you’d rather not and then talk about ‘being good’. It’s not a moral issue whether I eat cake or not, it’s just I don’t fancy it. So those who like it, eat, those who don’t want it, let them be!

Hoglet70 · 22/03/2024 17:07

It's not your fault the miserable cows have no willpower. Personally I would step up the baking to once a week.

🤣

ArrrMeHearties · 22/03/2024 20:29

It's a case of we don't want cake so nobody's allowed to have cake. Tell them to get stuffed, clarify with HR that cake is okay and carry on as you have been doing

Zanatdy · 22/03/2024 20:30

Tell her tough. When you work in an office avoiding temptation is part of the job. I’d love it if a colleague brought in home made cakes. No-one will report you, you’re not selling them

echt · 22/03/2024 20:34

The only unhealthy thing going on here is the complainers' attitude to food. "Good" indeedHmm

Dweetfidilove · 22/03/2024 20:34

Bake more often if you can. Folks always need someone to blame for their lack of will.

NoNameNoOne · 22/03/2024 20:36

Where do you work? Is there a vacancy. Oh n tell em to show it up their arse if they can't stop themselves from sticking it in their cake holes. Don't let them get you down x

FluffyFanny · 22/03/2024 20:45

I'd ignore. I work in a school and the best days are the days someone brigs in cakes for their birthday!

We also frequently organise a bake sale where the children bring in cakes to sell to raise money for their chosen charities. If we can do this in a school then the healthans safeties of no concern. Nobody ever got food poisoning from a fairycake!

Howbizarre22 · 22/03/2024 20:46

I’m always on a diet too but never would I think to say something so selfish and self centred. Why spoil everyone else’s enjoyment? Lovely cakes are a great morale booster at work and as for mentioning safety & HR??? Sad bastards

Stravaig · 22/03/2024 20:50

Every single workplace I've been in, people bring stuff in and then send an email/chat just saying 'chocolate cake in the kitchen, help yourself' maybe labelling any allergens, and that's it.

This is a good way of doing it. I'd list the ingredients (few enough on something homemade), so that all possible allergens are flagged, and those on diets have a clear reminder that cakes contain fat and sugar.

Barney16 · 22/03/2024 20:50

Sounds lovely. Come and work with me. My particular favourites are lemon cake and carrot cake. Although would very very happily much my way through chocolate or a nice Madeira with cherries in. As for the non cake eaters they can sit their sad selves together in their own particular, cake free, misery bubble.

Hayliebells · 22/03/2024 20:51

We have some great bakers in my team, and I always love it when they bring in their cakes, I'm sure your other colleagues are very grateful. Some people are just miseries. Ignore them and leave them to their miserable diet culture impoverished lives.

TeaGinandFags · 22/03/2024 20:52

Will you adopt me? Please?

Talk to HR to cover your posterior but take some samples with you for 'analysis'.

Then talk to the rest of your team who will doubtless make their opinions clear.

notacooldad · 22/03/2024 20:54

Well .y manager is an excellent baker and brings us things she has made when we have team meetings and supervisions. Everyone is happy.
Those that are dieting say, no thanks, I'm cutting out cakes at the moment.
These two sound snidey.

oakleaffy · 22/03/2024 20:56

Being ''Good''?? Jeez.....no wonder people have eating disorders.

There is nothing ''Naughty'' about cakes...especially lovely home made ones.

As PP have said, @Bibblybumblebee bring raw carrots for the ones who don't want cakes.

MartinsSpareCalculator · 22/03/2024 20:58

Theres always some goodies in our kitchen at work. I'm yet to have any!

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 22/03/2024 20:59

Omg 🙄we do this at my work. They sound like a couple of complete killjoys!

Lovelydovey · 22/03/2024 21:00

I probably bake for the office on a similar frequency. After a big drive on healthy eating at work I asked the team if I should stop and got told to carry on. I will also often bake for bake sales if others organise them.

We worked a number of weekends last year (approx 100 people over the weekend) and I always baked for those. That went down exceptionally well. I caught my boss hiding the last slices of cake in case he needed it at 2am on a night shift!
