Bringing baked goods into work

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:03

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

I can see that it's hard to refuse baked goods when you are trying to be careful about what you eat - but they have been ridiculous bringing up food hygiene and talking about reporting you to HR.

Hankunamatata · 22/03/2024 21:04

Please make an extra large cake for next week and take it in.

The only unhealthy thing going on here is the complainers' attitude to food. "Good" indeedHmm

Absolutely! I hate all that 'good/naughty' moralising around food.

OP you're doing a nice thing for your colleagues imo. The complainers may be struggling with their willpower (tbf so would I, if someone brought in chocolate cake 😄) but that doesn't give them the right to quash something the majority are enjoying.

(Also: damn, I really want some chocolate cake now. 😄)

cakewench · 22/03/2024 21:05

I absolutely love baking and I love to bring things to work when I can (which unfortunately ends up only being 2-3 times a year, but thankfully my co-workers are enthusiastic and appreciative when I do.

However, I avoid cakes when they're brought in by others, unless they're something particularly nice looking or homemade. I work in a school so there's always a lot of store bought items bring brought in. Once you get in the habit of avoiding them, it isn't too hard.

My point is: I'd never dream of telling someone not to bring their cakes in. Everyone else absolutely loves them. They cheer people up. You aren't required to eat them.

4andnotcounting · 22/03/2024 21:11

I’d bake for a homeless instead of for ungrateful people at work - 🤷‍♀️

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/03/2024 21:11

Make a flag for the next one you bake with "JOY SPONGE" written on it.

LegoTherapy · 22/03/2024 21:15

This has reminded me I need to make cake tomorrow. A Victoria sponge will be perfect. I'm miserable with a virus but I'm sure I could eat cake with my tea.

People with no willpower or skewed perceptions of food are not your problem OP.

I would take in cake plus a bag of apples for those being “good”.

We did actually lose a load of midwives once who been to a wedding and the person who made the cake was a relative of the bride/groom but they had norovirus when making it. Lots of our midwives then went down with it… but that’s unusual.

Or a couple of chocolate brownies made with one of those brownie recipes with spinach in it and double the spinach and leave out the sugar. Hand them their “ good “ brownies first then don’t offer the springy, spongey Victoria sponge to them.

emsa1 · 22/03/2024 21:17

I’m trying to lose weight so tend to avoid office treats. But wouldn’t want to spoil fun for others. Sounds very kind of you to bring them in.

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:16

I only bring in cakes every now and then definitely not every week. I was going to bring Easter biscuits in next week.

My manager always helps himself and has even requested a particular cake.

I just was so worried I would get in trouble.
These two woman are normally ok. When I came in with some cake last one said ‘oh here comes Betty Crocker’. I laughed but now thinking it was said in an unkind manner 🙁

Yeah, bitches.
I'd like to work with you! There are so many miserable people these days that it's lovely to be around a co-worker who likes to share the way you do. Don't change. ❤️

CreateAUsername2024 · 22/03/2024 21:18

What an insane woman! Not your fault she can't control herself around cake, keep baking! Bet HR would think she's a twat if she reported it.

Canthave2manycats · 22/03/2024 21:18

My manager many years ago now used to occasionally bring in a cake his wife had baked. They were delicious!!

My organisation had a bake-in competition at a staff day a while back. We're HR!!!!

heybearx · 22/03/2024 21:19

What a jobsworth! It's lovely you have been baking for the team. Sorry you don't get the appreciation

Am a teacher - someone is always baking stuff and it is gone in a matter of minutes. People can always say no and use some willpower!!

When I was a teacher I often took in rhubarb, raspberries, runner beans and cooking apples because I grew a lot in my garden but they all come at once and there's only so much room in a freezer. I thought it was nice to share. One teacher used to take the cooking apples and rhubarb and bring me back an apple or rhubarb crumble. I made sure she was always offered the goods first. We had a cake club and we took turns to make a cake and took in to share and believe me the Headteacher was often first to grab a slice.

herbetta · 22/03/2024 21:22

I'm early 50s and do a sh!t load of both exercise & HM cake!

They sound like they could do with some HRT (and I do a sh!t load of that too) 😜

Seewhaticansee · 22/03/2024 21:22

They are so unreasonable! I absolutely love homemade bakes and would feel upset that someone had stopped it at my workplace. As you enjoy baking could you bake some with less sugar etc or maybe from one of the BHF healthy recipes online FOR EXAMPLE and label them as such for anyone who wants to cut down? I have a lovely fatless/fatfree chocolate brownie recipe which people actually ask me to bake.

PersephonePomegranate23 · 22/03/2024 21:24

No-one is forced to eat it. Those who are 'being good' can say no, as can anyone who is concerned about the risk of it not coming from a hygiene rated premises.

You're not to blame for others' lack of self control.

ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 22/03/2024 21:25

Imagine acting like such a wet wipe in your place of employment. Telling people they can't bring in cake because you're trying to be 'good' and have no self-control around such foods. Just show the office your bare arse, Janice. It would be more dignified.

WhatsitWiggle · 22/03/2024 21:31

We used to have "cake club" in our office. Each week, someone would bake something for the rest of the participants. You could opt in or out, but not fair to partake of goodies then opt out when it was your turn to bake.

I love to bake, so I was on the rota, but I didn't always eat what others made if I was watching my calories. And others were the same. It stopped with Covid, because we're hybrid working now.

But honestly, these women need to wind their necks in. You're not doing any harm!

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/03/2024 21:32

At work we have to only take in cakes on certain days as a certain PTimer will eat the whole fucking lot if its left in the canteen on the days she is in. And still moans like hell about how she cant lose weight.....

Seashor · 22/03/2024 21:37

Best days ever when my colleagues who bake bring something in. Ignore them.

DigitalGhost · 22/03/2024 21:44

I work in HR and we all bring baking in sometimes we even bake using ingredients we've grown. 🤷🏼 If people don't want it they don't eat it.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 22/03/2024 21:50

I love baking and one thing I miss about not having an office now is taking in cakes! Ignore the miserable trouts. In my last job I did put everything in individual bags as we had quite a disgusting man on another team who licked his fingers and touched everything otherwise

MaloneMeadow · 22/03/2024 21:51

Cheeesus · 22/03/2024 17:07

Every week and I could see that might be a bit annoying for people with little willpower, but every six weeks sounds lovely.

They’re grown adult women. If they don’t have the willpower then that’s their issue that they need to fix, nobody else should should have to change their actions just because of a lack of self discipline

Bumblefuzz · 22/03/2024 21:54

Ignore them and continue. As an HR Manager myself, I would be laughing at this grievance.
