Bringing baked goods into work

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:03

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

I love when people bring in goodies 😁 hence why I'm a plump hobbit!

It gets so tedious when people go on and on about how good they're being and their diets and how they can't eat anything bar the diet stuff

The only way theyd possibly have a point was if they're say celiac or diabetic and you only brought in things they couldn't eat, especially as there's so many recipes available to accommodate dietary requirements - you could then have done a suitable cake so everyone can enjoy it!

But they're choosing to "be good" (that phrase gives me the rage too) so if they don't want to enjoy your cakes that's their choice, just as it's your choice to bring in cakes that almost everyone else enjoys!

Total arseholes. You’d be welcome in my team anytime!

I agree with your co worker.

Why?

sandalsinthebin · 22/03/2024 19:48

I don't eat treats that people bring in to work due to (unfortunately) being in a permanent diet but I would never pass comment. They sound very bad mannered just ignore them.

cremebrulait · 22/03/2024 19:49

ohhhh I’d have some fun!!

I’d email her and thank her for compliments that your cakes are irresistible. And you’ve taken onboard it can be hard for ‘her willpower’ and so you’d be open to the idea of making more resistible treats IF she has recipes. Or perhaps she could just put a bowl of fruit or a stash of healthier foods by the treats?? And thank her graciously for her concern about licensing to share treats with colleagues but you’ve confirmed that’s not required in the UK.

shakeitoffsis · 22/03/2024 19:49

Pathetic. It's their own greedy fault if they can't keep there mitts off your cakes. Keep baking. The more calorific the better!

Jesus what a bunch of joy sponges. I would leave a company full of such joyless people.

Maybe this is the answer.

Bake a cake specially for them and call it a joy sponge.

VictoriaEra · 22/03/2024 19:51

Hoglet70 · 22/03/2024 17:07

It's not your fault the miserable cows have no willpower. Personally I would step up the baking to once a week.

Yes - exactly this.

Wishfulthinkingonmypart · 22/03/2024 19:52

Personally I really don’t like people bringing treats in when I’m ‘trying to be good’. Impulsivity / developing a healthy relationship with food / willpower … I find it all hard.

So in that sense I get where they’re coming from.

But, just because I struggle doesn’t mean other people will… asking someone not to bring stuff is a bit much, especially if they’re appreciated by the rest of the team!

As far as the hygiene thing goes - I’ve never heard there’s any formal requirements for home baking… you’d cancel all the office charity bake-offs. Which would be a bit grim.

Bit pathetic of them really - I say bake on!

Sharontheodopolodous · 22/03/2024 19:52

I love baking

I'm told my brownies are to die for

I sometimes make them and take them to work and all work have asked is I write down any allergies leave the note next to the tin and then crack on

If anyone started squawking about complaining, they'd be shot down fast by everyone else

Bloody fun sponges

rwalker · 22/03/2024 19:54

send a group email explaining
you think you’ll have to stop tray bakes as you have been told it makes it difficult for people trying to be good and they were concerned you didn’t have a food hygiene certificate for your kitchen

sit back and watch it unfold

JohnAndYoko · 22/03/2024 19:55

Unless you're doing a Trunchbull/Bruce Bogtrotter on them, they're being beyond ridiculous. Just label them with "for everyone except Sally and Linda".
Oh, and please come and work in my office....

LindorDoubleChoc · 22/03/2024 19:56

I don't eat cake that people bake or buy for the office. Only because I don't like it. I feel a bit awkward about saying "I don't like cake" so just let everyone else get on with it.

If you brought in sourdough bread to toast and some butter and marmite, or a cheese scone, or home made pizza, I'd be hogging it like the best of them.

WickedSerious · 22/03/2024 19:58

Gettingbysomehow · 22/03/2024 18:35

We are not allowed to bring any home baked products in because management have no idea what conditions they were baked in. We can only bring in closed packets from shops.

What a time to be alive.

MsRosley · 22/03/2024 19:58

No good deed goes unpunished.

JohnAndYoko · 22/03/2024 20:04

Just re-read your post - you only bring them in every 6 WEEKS, and they're complaining it's too often?! I have to admit I too sometimes complain to the best baker in our office - because she only brings things in once a month. When it's been a while, I occasionally leave little hints (cake pictures) on her desk 😁

Wish44 · 22/03/2024 20:04

As long as you are not a feeder op! I work with a feeder who brings in the most wonderful delightful cakes… she doesn’t eat them herself… hence is thin… but gets hurt and upset when others say no….

App13 · 22/03/2024 20:07

I'm the same, im considered a famous Baker at work, so if be distraught if someone said that.

Id tell them to go fk themselves.

Littlemisscapable · 22/03/2024 20:07

Honestly what am I reading... definetly ignore this pair of miseries and bring in more cake more often and make a big fuss about it.

Growlybear83 · 22/03/2024 20:07

I think I would be inclined to give the woman an extra large slice of cake and tell her to shove it up her arse. It's lovely of you to bring home made cake into work - I would have loved that when I worked in an office.

Alchemistress · 22/03/2024 20:08

I have two words:

Fuck 'em.

Grin
fatphalange · 22/03/2024 20:10

What wankers 😂

IloveAslan · 22/03/2024 20:10

Ignore the moaners. It's not your fault they are killjoys and can't possibly eat normal food.

We had excellent bakers at my last full-time job and loved them bringing food in, and it was also a tradition for the people having a birthday each month to "shout" morning tea. We also had constant dieters, but they wouldn't have dreamt of spoiling everyone else's enjoyment.

Carry on the good work OP. 🍰

herbygarden · 22/03/2024 20:11

I wish you worked with me! What an absolute bitch that woman is, because she can't resist she wants everyone to miss out on your cakes. Screw her!!! I might bring in Easter biscuits and make a little gift box or bag of them to send home with all your colleagues who enjoy your cakes! Not those two obvs!

LindorDoubleChoc · 22/03/2024 20:11

I once started a new job and the very first conversation I had with my colleague, beyond "hello" was something to do with her weight and her diet and Slimming World. I was Confused.
