Bringing baked goods into work

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:03

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

I would ignore and carry on. Although when you take in your next batch I would also leave a copy of hhe food hygiene regulations with the relevant section highlighted which states you need no certificate, but then I am a bit on the petty side.

Snazzysausage · 22/03/2024 19:24

How ridiculous of them. As someone who spent most of her working life in catering,it's not a legal requirement to have a hygiene certificate or rating for cakes and sweet goods, even if selling them,as they are classed as low risk. Most home bakers do have an inspection but it's not strictly necessary.

Strictlymad · 22/03/2024 19:24

Oh good grief now I’ve heard it all, what she means is ‘the cakes are fab but I’m overweight and have zero will power so I’m gonna spoil it for everyone and make you feel bad’ you don’t need hygiene certificates what a load of tosh! Mention it to your manager, don’t say who it was though I suspect they will guess and see what’s said, I expect manager will say ignore and please carry on!

OatFlatWhiteForMe · 22/03/2024 19:26

DH’s work do cake Friday!

FlemishHorse · 22/03/2024 19:28

Believe it or not, some people don’t fancy eating cake every bloody day. This happened somewhere I worked and I hated the passive/aggressive assumption that my not eating cake was an either a criticism of others or some deep seated issue for me. It wasn’t. Personally I don’t have a problem with cake.

Oblomov24 · 22/03/2024 19:28

Unhealthy?
Someone got sick? They'd have no recourse. We all make these knowingly.

I'd check with my manager, HR aswell, in writing so there's a paper trail.

She sounds a pain?

PonkyPonky · 22/03/2024 19:28

Are you looking for a new job? Asking for my rumbling stomach that works with a bunch of builders who haven’t baked a thing in their lives! Those women are horrid. They don’t have to eat it, I think I’d bake something extra gooey a calorific next time just to annoy them. Brownies would do it I reckon

katseyes7 · 22/03/2024 19:29

Both myself and one of my shift used to take in home made cakes/traybakes/flapjacks. Both for our colleagues, and for fundraisers such as Children in Need.
Not once did anyone complain, question our hygiene standards, or say "Oh, I'm being good...." - if anything, myself and the other 'baker' were the ones who were most likely to say that on occasions!
I love baking. I'm not a great cook, but l'm good at cakes. And both myself and the other baker lived alone, so we either wouldn't have baked usually, or would have eaten the lot ourselves.
We'd take in cakes for birthdays, or l, as manager, would do it every month or so to thank my shift for their hard work. We didn't get bonuses (non profit) of any kind, and l just felt it was something l could do to let my staff know how much they were appreciated.
One of the lads even asked if l'd make him Nigella's Guinness Cake for his dad's birthday after l'd taken one in for the shift, he paid me for the ingredients, and l was happy to oblige. And his dad was over the moon with it, so l was told.
I'm with the PP on this - it's cake. And no one's forcing anyone to eat it.
Also with PP - take in a bag of apples. If they're 'being good' they can eat those.
Oh, and our senior manager was first in the queue for cake, so no problem there!

You don’t need a hygiene certificate unless you are selling the cakes

Even then if it's a one off, say at a charity event, you don't either

Demerara1 · 22/03/2024 19:31

What a fucking bore.

You're lovely, OP. Please would you come and work at my school Grin

Demerara1 · 22/03/2024 19:32

Hoglet70 · 22/03/2024 17:07

It's not your fault the miserable cows have no willpower. Personally I would step up the baking to once a week.

Ha ha, I love this!

byteme1011 · 22/03/2024 19:34

Tell them to go to HR and they can make a fool of themselves

PreeningPopinjay · 22/03/2024 19:35

Imagine the HR bod wearily taking up their pen to take notes

'you were offered carrot cake you say?'

Purplebunnie · 22/03/2024 19:36

Can I please get a job on your team. I'm very good at making tea

blackpear · 22/03/2024 19:37

I have a wonderful colleague who brings in cake. It really boosts morale. And, guess what - if I’m dieting, I politely decline. Your colleagues sound like twats, OP.

Believe it or not, some people don’t fancy eating cake every bloody day. This happened somewhere I worked and I hated the passive/aggressive assumption that my not eating cake was an either a criticism of others or some deep seated issue for me. It wasn’t. Personally I don’t have a problem with cake.

I used to work somewhere where there were cakes brought in every single day. I would take part on a Friday (both buy some and eat some) but omg yeah I had an eating disorder and lived on lettuce leaves apparently (nope just didn’t want to eat cake every single day) the irony was every few weeks they would collectively decide to go on a diet where there would be no cakes on the Mon, Tue, Wed, but almost always back by the Thur, Fri when they would announce that they can’t ’live such miserable lives’ and the cycle would continue.

Currently, on the rare occasion my team head into the office someone will bring cakes (one team member in particular is an amazing baker) and I think that’s fine as it’s more of a social catch up. The OP says she doesn’t take cakes in all the time, I think every few weeks is perfectly fine and obviously she isn’t required to have a food hygiene certificate, could you imagine if anyone who wanted to share their cakes with friends and family had to have one first.

These women sound a bit bat shit tbh and I wouldn’t bother about them OP.

EasterBunnny · 22/03/2024 19:37

I agree with your co worker.

Whereareallthemillionaires · 22/03/2024 19:37

I would ask the rest of the team whether they are happy with your cakes.
Then
Tell HR you bring cakes in for anyone in your team that fancies some.

The two women complaining need to learn restraint. Their diet and food habits are not your problem
Honestly some people are ridiculous.

BellaVita · 22/03/2024 19:38

She is absolutely bonkers 😆

If she cannot refrain then that’s on her.

Am sure HR will tell her to piss off.

PossumintheHouse · 22/03/2024 19:38

EasterBunnny · 22/03/2024 19:37

I agree with your co worker.

Well you would, wouldn't you? Too many eggs to scoff this season.

So quick 🤣🤣

peakygold · 22/03/2024 19:41

DD brought home samosas today that a colleague had made everyone. They were bloody lovely.

SpilltheTea · 22/03/2024 19:42

They're being pathetic. No one cares about their diets.

LancashireTart · 22/03/2024 19:45

Tell them in the nicest possible way to go and rotate themselves on a brass cactus. Why should you and your other colleagues miss out just because they have no willpower? Cheeky twats.
