Bringing baked goods into work

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:03

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle oh come on. You know I didn’t mean they were baking in the office. I am talking about free time in general to whip up foods to force feed colleagues!!

Has nobody ever heard of alcoholics falling off the wagon? One drink is all it takes. Same with a serious cake habit.

What you said was

But it’s good to know the clients being charged hundreds of pounds an hour are getting good value for money from your law firm. Or maybe all those billable hours give you plenty of other time to waste?

which tbh, on re reading makes no sense whatsoever.

And stop with all this "force feeding" nonsense.

@Bibblybumblebee so you bribed HR with cake?

Why is it so important to you to feed others baked goods?

Things which not so long ago seemed ridiculous are now standard in the workplace. For example, I started work when people smoked freely in the workplace. A ban was seen as ridiculous. Then it became law and now we’d think it strange to see smokers.

Britain has an obesity crisis. It might be reasonable to not put temptation in the path of others.

Scottishskifun · 26/03/2024 11:02

@Waitingforgeorge and its for individuals to take responsibility of that! I mean gone are the days of a tea trolly and cake that came to your desk.

Yes I get marketing and clever advertising but it is possible to walk past and not pick things up. Addiction (and recovering from addiction) is about taking personal responsibility for your actions and examining causation. Someone bringing cake into an office is not going to be the root cause.

Wouldn't it be great if individuals took responsibility but they don't and the NHS picks up the bill.

TabbyM · 26/03/2024 11:31

I have literally just had a fruit scone baked by a colleague, crack on!

Unless you are a feeder and follow people about and force cake into them.

Noyesnoyes · 26/03/2024 11:34

Ok @TorringtonDean you also have comprehension issues?

The op states that HR said it was ok as long as they received some, she did bribe them at all!

She's also clarified that she puts the cake on a table, not foisting, not force feeding, not insisting etc.

It's up to people to make personal choices.

Noyesnoyes · 26/03/2024 11:35

@Waitingforgeorge and you think that's because of cake once every six weeks at work .... 🤔

@Waitingforgeorge but I am talking about people taking responsibility and resisting temptation and not being tempted at work!

The NHS spends quite a bit on programmes to teach people to say no to cake. But you are happy to have it being offered to people in the workplace!

I know it might seem funny and I’ve made it sound a bit funny too. But keeping a healthy weight is deadly serious.

Offered......

Not force fed

Not foisted on

Just offered! A choice.

1mabon · 26/03/2024 11:56

When I was working, on your birthday you bought cake for everyone in the office, nobody complained and nobody got sick in all those years.

It's just one of this and a bit of that and each item taken by itself makes no difference but all adds up to quite a significant proportion of the country being obese and in poor health. But you know - everyone's right to that cake is more important than the length of the queue to see the cardiologist.

Bibblybumblebee · 24/03/2024 09:01

Wow! Didn’t expect such a huge response. I’ve read every one and thank you for sharing your opinions.

Funny thing is it’s probably me that should be on a diet - I’m a size 18- I don’t love my body but I’m very grateful for my body.

These two ladies are so slim!

Ive spoken to my manager. He’s rolled his eyes and told me I’d get a disciplinary if I stopped baking 🤭
He told me I didn’t need a health and safety certificate.

I also called the HR office and the guy there said it was fine as long as once in a while I took some up to their office as well. I’m baking the a cherry Bakewell tray bake for tomorrow 😋

Good for you. Some people are just unbelievable.

Noyesnoyes · 26/03/2024 12:06

@Waitingforgeorge I suppose it's the force feeding that causes the issue!

CactusMactus · 26/03/2024 12:08

Next time you bake, maybe be 'considerate' and bring in a shop bought, diet version for the two ladies. Everyone else can have your lovely, homemade cake and they can eat aspartame and margarine....

Was anyone tied to a chair and forced to eat it though?

That's the big question.

People have to stop eating so much sugary shit - even homemade sugary shit, nd they'll find it hard and we as a society, need to find ways to make it less hard because what we are doing at the moment isn't working - people are getting fatter and fatter and eating cake at work is part of it - it might not be all of it but it's not helping. Maybe the OP should consider another hobby -volunteering to cook for the homeless?

Or some dust?

Fizbosshoes · 26/03/2024 12:56

Maybe OP could deal cakes behind the bike sheds?

Zilla1 · 26/03/2024 13:00

Good for you, OP. HNRTT beyond the 'bring some apples' post which I liked so the next time you bring some baking in, I'd bring a pack of Ryvita/whatever dieting cardboard would be more helpful to leave on the same table by the cake.

Good luck.

mummydoris2006 · 26/03/2024 13:09

@Bibblybumblebee Today I bought a cherry and almond bake from the very scrumptious but extremely expensive bakery van that pulls up outside my office every morning. I thought of you and your cherry bakewell and wished you were in my office 😊

MarkWithaC · 26/03/2024 13:20

Some people on here are hilariously po-faced.
The comparisons with booze, cigs and heroin are making me snort.
Also Ihearyou, 'You don’t have to eat them, fat cunts' made me HOWL Grin Easter Grin

The OP enjoys their hobby, again nobody is force feeding anyone cake!

Also cooking isn't the same hobby as baking. I love to cook, I hate baking as I'm inpatient and don't follow recipes.

Everything should be in moderation and its up to individuals to make those choices. For instance I'm losing weight so I bought myself a very dark chocolate easter egg as I know I will only want a small piece at a time. My children did an Easter egg hunt but again they are given chocolate in moderation so it's neither a treat or reward.

Penalising, taxing or banning doesn't work. Educating, understanding calories/energy requirements and moderation does. Its why so many diets fail as they are not long term sustainable.

Highlandcows · 26/03/2024 13:34

I work in a school in a department with a load of teachers. There’s nearly 20 of us. I can’t recall a week where there wasn’t some kind of home baked cake/biscuits brought in!
we even do a department ‘bake off’ where each week someone bakes anonymously and we score each week. Then at the end the bake off winner is revealed.
we have a few who don’t always eat the cake if they’re trying to be particularly good, or dieting etc, including myself at times.
but we all enjoy the food that gets brought in and diet or not I’d never dream of asking/telling someone that they couldn’t bring in cake!
what a pair of miserable fun sponges. They need to work on their willpower!
