Do you vape?

I know this will attract judgement but I'm not asking for criticism, just discussion.

Never been a smoker but recently took up vaping. Dh does it and so do a few friends. I was curious. We are going through a very stressful time in life - young dc and no help, demanding job, house renovation. I was winding down in the evenings using booze and junk food which wasn't good for me either so I suppose I just wanted to try something that helped relax me. I do enjoy it but I don't think I'm 'addicted' per se, for example I don't take it out with me during the day and don't miss it. I just use it in the evenings.

Anyway bizarrely I have health anxiety which is quite ridiculous when I think of all of the unhealthy habits and coping mechanisms I have. But I do worry about the vape. There is so much conflicting info out there - loads of sources saying it's much better than smoking others saying it's as bad or worse. All the alleged health issues they can cause but no definitive studies as they've not been around long enough.

So I guess I'm wondering if you vape, why? What does it bring you? And do you worry about the health impact?

But I do worry about the vape.

and so you should

MamaBear2210T · 22/03/2024 08:22

No I don't. Never smoked and would never vape. In 5/10 years time it will all come out how terrible it is for you.

ForNaiceHiker · 22/03/2024 08:25

i agree

it’s building up now

PiggieWig · 22/03/2024 08:25

I do, because it’s better than smoking which was a previous habit. But I’d like to stop. It’s hideously addictive - way more than cigs, expensive and I feel like a knob. I’m working out my next move and when and how to commit.

WandaWonder · 22/03/2024 08:27

I can't think of one good reason to take it up

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/03/2024 08:29

No. This was discussed on Politics Live yesterday. More and more evidence emerging about the potential dangers.

DustyLee123 · 22/03/2024 08:29

it’s not better than smoking, you shouldn’t do either. It’s physically and environmentally bad.

Telekoma · 22/03/2024 08:32

My youngest and her husband both vape, they used to smoke but switched to refillable vapes around 4 years ago.
My house smells like an air freshener can has exploded when they visit.
Neither me or my husband have ever smoked or vaped.

TheLastTimeEver · 22/03/2024 08:33

It’s a myth that it’s helping you with stress.

Read Alan Carr’s stop smoking books
extrapolate to vapes. Of course you’re additicted.

If it’s helpful - vaping looks common AF! Sorry but it really does.

my daughter 20 does it and it’s had health implications for her. Can’t bear it. Don’t waste your money. Use it for a nice treat like a spa or an exercise class.

Damnloginpopup · 22/03/2024 08:33

No. They look and smell ridiculous. I'm so pleased to be off smoking but if I was forced to do one or the other (both shitty choices) I'd smoke. Marlboro too, go big or go home

Steve McQueen wouldn't have vaped. I doubt even Barbara Cartland would have either.

sleekcat · 22/03/2024 08:33

No I don't, just thinking about it or walking past someone doing it makes me want to vomit. It reminds me of a sickly version of an air freshener, which I don't like either.
You don't need studies to come to the conclusion that inhaling thousands of chemicals is bad for you.

HungryBeagle · 22/03/2024 08:35

The problem is, vaping was originally seen as a way to help people quit smoking, but now people who have never smoked have taken up vaping and created a whole new group of people who will develop health problems.
I hate walking past people vaping in the street, I hate the sickly sweet smell. I think they look like knobs, too.

ask them to vape outside

no way would i have smoking or vaping inside my home

Squiggles23 · 22/03/2024 08:38

No offence OP but it’s like watching adults walk around with dummy’s.

The amount of disposable vapes littering the parks and streets is awful.

Cant understand how any adult who hasn’t smoked would take it up. Very unattractive habit.

YouDidntEvenAskIfSheWasThereMoriarty · 22/03/2024 08:39

I do.

I was never a very heavy smoker, but it affected my health, particularly endurance. I would cough rubbish up, I'd get out of breath, my hair and clothes would stink, my car smelt, my house smelled along with bedding and curtains, it hurt my throat, and they didn't actually taste very nice either. It was far too expensive too, especially as I grew older and the tax on them went through the roof.

I vape now. It doesn't affect my chest, I don't cough, I don't feel short of breath, I don't worry about the smell because it's minor, doesn't cling, and it's usually fruity, my house and my car don't smell, it doesn't hurt my throat, and I like the taste and convenience of it. It's also significantly cheaper.

I never want to smoke a cigarette for the rest of my life now.

Singleandproud · 22/03/2024 08:39

There is no conflicting evidence though for a previous non-smoker, you've just taken up a habit with known health implications for no real reason. Yes compared to smoking it's better but in your circumstances if you wanted to relax you could have taken up many other hobbies for the same price or cheaper, meditation, going for a walk, going swimming etc.

Waitingfordoggo · 22/03/2024 08:40

I do but only because it’s the only way I can stay off the fags. I smoked for 20 years and tried to give up numerous times using patches, sprays, Champix, hypnotherapy, Allen Carr’s book, cold turkey… You name it, I tried it multiple times. Vaping was the only thing that worked.

Although I appreciate it will take time for evidence to be gathered, I recently heard an expert from Kings College saying that all the current evidence suggests it is significantly less harmful than smoking (because it doesn’t contain tar and all the other shite that’s in cigs). I do accept though that it may still be harmful and wait to see what the evidence is. But ultimately it makes no difference to me personally because at the moment it is either vaping or smoking for me, and I believe vaping is less harmful.

But taking up vaping as a non-smoker is madness, I can’t understand why anyone would.

HungryBeagle · 22/03/2024 08:41

I think only someone who vapes would describe the smell as ‘minor’. The sickly sweet smell when you pass people vaping in the street is 🤢

I don't mind them vaping in my house. I quite like the smell of them.
I won't allow tobacco products to be smoked in my home though.

MaloneMeadow · 22/03/2024 08:41

No, I don’t. It’s a disgusting, antisocial habit and is increasingly being used as a gateway drug to smoking in young people, never mind the health impacts which we don’t even know the full extent of yet

Notfeelinghunkydory · 22/03/2024 08:42

I smoked for over 25 years quit and started vaping almost 2 years ago. I know I need to quit the vape but it's now a habit.

GinBlossom94 · 22/03/2024 08:42

I've just gone back to smoking from vaping. I was vaping a ridiculous amount, constantly in my hand, a 600 puff vape equals about 50 cigarettes. I'm using rollies, and having 10-12 a day currently. First couple days were hard as like I said, vape was always in my hand, but smoking I have to go outside, I wouldn't smoke in my car, even going to the shops it doesn't occur to me to take them. I do plan to fully quit, but feel more in control seeing how much I'm smoking

Summerhillsquare · 22/03/2024 08:43

Yes. Helps keep me awake as I'm exhausted. I find it much more addictive than smoking though!

Having a cloud of thick, white, sweet smelling smoke blown over you is absolutely revolting🤢 Boils my blood that people think it’s acceptable to completely disregard those around them

Edited

my friend who vapes says she always vapes so much less when visiting me because i ask her to go outside

could be a good way to getting your child to reduce!
