Do you vape?

I know this will attract judgement but I'm not asking for criticism, just discussion.

Never been a smoker but recently took up vaping. Dh does it and so do a few friends. I was curious. We are going through a very stressful time in life - young dc and no help, demanding job, house renovation. I was winding down in the evenings using booze and junk food which wasn't good for me either so I suppose I just wanted to try something that helped relax me. I do enjoy it but I don't think I'm 'addicted' per se, for example I don't take it out with me during the day and don't miss it. I just use it in the evenings.

Anyway bizarrely I have health anxiety which is quite ridiculous when I think of all of the unhealthy habits and coping mechanisms I have. But I do worry about the vape. There is so much conflicting info out there - loads of sources saying it's much better than smoking others saying it's as bad or worse. All the alleged health issues they can cause but no definitive studies as they've not been around long enough.

So I guess I'm wondering if you vape, why? What does it bring you? And do you worry about the health impact?

No offence OP but it’s like watching adults walk around with dummy’s.

The amount of disposable vapes littering the parks and streets is awful.

Cant understand how any adult who hasn’t smoked would take it up. Very unattractive habit.

This. I get second hand embarrassment for them

crumblingschools · 22/03/2024 08:45

Why would an adult vape if they have never smoked?

It’s a nightmare that vaping is no longer just seen as a means to stop smoking, although I assume it was never seen as a long term alternative. So many young people now addicted to the habit, some being hospitalised due to dodgy vapes, losing school days as being caught vaping on school grounds is an automatic suspension.

No, absolutely nit.
They are a complete unknown. Probably safe than smoking definitely more harmful than not.
And unlike junk food and alcohol you are inflicting it on others around you and the children living in your home.

I really don't see the attraction....if its "relaxing" it must contain some sort of drug such as nicotine which will be addictive. If not then what is the point?

ForNaiceHiker · 22/03/2024 08:43

my friend who vapes says she always vapes so much less when visiting me because i ask her to go outside

could be a good way to getting your child to reduce!

Edited

She would only reduce for the length of her visit, so it's a bit pointless.
To be fair to her, she's not constantly puffing on it.

It’s quite sweet that some posters think that people with an addiction will stop having this addiction because other people think we look silly 😂 You’re welcome to feel embarrassed for me but I assure you I won’t notice.

Sev3nWonders · 22/03/2024 08:50

I vape as a replacement for when I stopped smoking a good few years ago, it’s just as addictive but not nearly as expensive for me.

I use a MOD with rechargeable batteries, rebuildable coils and make my own juice from websites that you can buy all the bits from so it costs me about £10 a month.

I’ve never used the disposable ones and don’t understand why someone who has never smoked would start? You will become addicted no matter what you say, most of them have nicotine and that’s the thing you become addicted to so as a non smoker, I would give them up just now op.

Zanatdy · 22/03/2024 08:50

I find it bizarre people who have never smoked vape. As someone who smoked for 13yrs of my life don’t get addicted to nicotine as it’s such a hard thing to give up. It’s been years since I quit now and I’m so glad I did. Vapes weren’t a think when I quit but I know people who vape constantly (Ex smokers)

Waitingfordoggo · 22/03/2024 08:51

@Mumof2teens79 Yes they contain nicotine. Nicotine in itself is not harmful. The harm in cigarettes is not caused by the nicotine but all the other chemicals.

No, nor me. I like vaping. Bet those feeling embarrassed for us think nothing of their own embarrassing habits

HungryBeagle · 22/03/2024 08:53

If people are using vapes as a way of quitting cigarettes then fair play to them. I just don’t understand why you would take it up if you’ve never smoked. Generally I don’t care what people do in their own homes, but to have it breathed over you in the street is antisocial and rank.

I don't think anyone who said that thinks that that will make anyone stop. They were just giving their opinion.

I also dislike vaping and think it looks ridiculous when people are constantly sucking on them. I don't think that me thinking this will make anyone stop though. Of course you wouldn't even notice that I don't like it, I don't go up to people and say "I think you look silly", no one would be aware of my opinion.

no one even remotely suggested that

the vaping is making you read things that don’t exist!

You love filling your lungs full of toxic chemical smoke. Delightful! It’s not something I’d be adverting or boasting about as if it’s a good thing

Tattletwat · 22/03/2024 08:58

I really don't get why you would vape, if you have never smoked it's really stupid.

I can understand people doing it to quit but most people aren't quiting they are just swapping one habit for another.

They are also annoying vapers who do it in inside public areas I don't want to smell your shitty vapes.

Also when people who say they aren't harmful, there are plenty of market or street sellers selling them from who knows where with unknown ingredients who haven't bought them from regulated suppliers.

Mumof2teens79 · 22/03/2024 08:58

Waitingfordoggo · 22/03/2024 08:51

@Mumof2teens79 Yes they contain nicotine. Nicotine in itself is not harmful. The harm in cigarettes is not caused by the nicotine but all the other chemicals.

Well that's debatable. Nicotine is addictive. Does have an impact on mood and impulse control and can cause poisoning, as well as withdrawal symptoms. There probably are long term health effects from nicotine itself.

But the idea that Vapes don't contain other harmful chemicals is frankly ludicrous. Possibly fewer than cigarettes if bought from a reputable manufacturer but what do people actually think the vapour is if not chemicals.....or how they make the flavours?

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 22/03/2024 09:00

Watch the Jordan North programme from last night on Vaping.
It's just as bad as smoking.

fromtheshires · 22/03/2024 09:01

Being an ex smoker, I moved to vapes with the intention of quitting but these are like little crack sticks! I would say they are far more addictive than smoking due to their more efficient nicotine delivery and there is no way to tell when I have had a cigarette as there is no 'end' like a cigarette has so I have probably increased my nicotine addiction.

From the health side I have stopped getting out of breath, wheezing and can smell and taste better.

The amount of hate that seems to be on here though is uncalled for. I'd rather have a few seconds of flavoured air than the smell of smoke that lingers when walking around.

I don't agree with a ban, but I think there should be more regulation without increasing the price as it does help people stay off cigarettes. Part of me thinks the government doesn't care about the environment, more about loss of revenue from people vaping and not smoking.

Risks to remain unknown at this time but we all go out the same way in the end I guess

SnapdragonToadflax · 22/03/2024 09:01

Logically, inhaling vapour and whatever chemicals are in the liquid into your lungs is not going to be healthy, is it.

I can't understand why you would take up vaping if you haven't smoked. I can see it has its worth as being less harmful (possibly) and less socially unpleasant than smoking... but there's no doubt it's unhealthy.

crumblingschools · 22/03/2024 09:02

My youngest and her husband both vape, they used to smoke but switched to refillable vapes around 4 years ago.
My house smells like an air freshener can has exploded when they visit.
Neither me or my husband have ever smoked or vaped.

Do they do it in the house or is it just on their clothes??

My mum smokes, she knows this triggers my asthma so she trys to improve the situation by using many many air fresheners in the house which only add to the chemical smog.
