Do you vape?

I know this will attract judgement but I'm not asking for criticism, just discussion.

Never been a smoker but recently took up vaping. Dh does it and so do a few friends. I was curious. We are going through a very stressful time in life - young dc and no help, demanding job, house renovation. I was winding down in the evenings using booze and junk food which wasn't good for me either so I suppose I just wanted to try something that helped relax me. I do enjoy it but I don't think I'm 'addicted' per se, for example I don't take it out with me during the day and don't miss it. I just use it in the evenings.

Anyway bizarrely I have health anxiety which is quite ridiculous when I think of all of the unhealthy habits and coping mechanisms I have. But I do worry about the vape. There is so much conflicting info out there - loads of sources saying it's much better than smoking others saying it's as bad or worse. All the alleged health issues they can cause but no definitive studies as they've not been around long enough.

So I guess I'm wondering if you vape, why? What does it bring you? And do you worry about the health impact?

Logically, inhaling vapour and whatever chemicals are in the liquid into your lungs is not going to be healthy, is it.

I can't understand why you would take up vaping if you haven't smoked. I can see it has its worth as being less harmful (possibly) and less socially unpleasant than smoking... but there's no doubt it's unhealthy.

I saw someone on MN write in all seriousness that it Canberra harmful because its "just vapour" another said it was "steam" people genuinely have no idea what any of these words actually mean.

I thought nicotine could cause issues with your heart

For people with heart disease, yes it can. For most people, no.

You love filling your lungs full of toxic chemical smoke. Delightful! It’s not something I’d be adverting or boasting about as if it’s a good thing

You might like filling your body with doughnuts. It’s not something I’d do.

HungryBeagle · 22/03/2024 09:09

The amount of hate that seems to be on here though is uncalled for. I'd rather have a few seconds of flavoured air than the smell of smoke that lingers when walking around

Id rather have nothing breathed over me in the street. And that argument would work if all the people who are vaping in the street would otherwise be smoking cigarettes, but that’s not the case. People aren’t just using them as cigarette replacement, they are taking up vaping as a hobby in its own right.

SpeedyDrama · 22/03/2024 09:10

Yes I vape. No I don’t care how it looks, yes it will affect health as any chemical realising item does (like the millions of cars on the road…) but it seems to be less about that to people like on this thread, and more a reason to feel smug about themselves. Same with tattoos, any reason to call anyone they think beneath them ‘common’.

I do agree with a crackdown on vaping though, the amount of children I’ve seen doing it is unacceptable. As an adult I take responsibility for my own choices though, enjoy my lemonade puffs are you glare, I’m not stopping.

This. Why do people think that they’re entitled to blow their shitty smoke all over others? Absolutely zero self awareness, but realistically also given the vast majority of vaping ‘types’ an entitled and disrespectful attitude

Telekoma · 22/03/2024 09:15

@Mumof2teens79 In the house.

Waitingfordoggo · 22/03/2024 09:15

What is a vaping ‘type’? I’m curious to know whether I fit the description.

(For the record: I’m a person who found it impossible to stop smoking because I’m hopelessly addicted to nicotine. I don’t think non-smokers should take up vaping. I think disposable vapes should be banned).

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 22/03/2024 09:15

i vape, have used it to quit smoking though only in the last couple of months.
yes its still bad for you but me and my clothes no longer reek of fags.
i do plan to quit vaping eventually but atm its so much cheaper than fags so saving me a small fortune and still getting my nicotine hit

I don’t feel smug about myself, I even bought one out of curiosity to see what the fuss was about a few years ago. Quickly concluded that it was an absolutely grim habit and did not understand the hype that has grown adults puffing on sweetie flavours and using them as dummies. Straight in the bin

Were you already a nicotine addict when you bought the vape? I can’t imagine trying it otherwise.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 22/03/2024 09:17

@MaloneMeadow Maybe they are entitled, but it seems that so are the wood burner types, given we read in the Guardian today the amount cancer caused by wood burners.

“Oh no! It’s obviously more harmful than I thought 😂”

Cognitive dissonance

Chemenger · 22/03/2024 09:17

No, because it seems like a total waste of time and money and I don’t want people to think I’m stupid. Same reason I wouldn’t smoke.

Why on earth would you need to buy one to come to that conclusion? I’ve never felt the need to buy heroin just to make sure it wasn’t the smartest lifestyle or look to go for. And what if you’d actually enjoyed it, would you have continued despite looking like a grown adult with a dummy?

Nope - and after a trial I don’t understand why people find cigarettes so great either.

@Mumof2teens79 In the house.

Why do you let them?
Would you let them smoke?
This is the problem with vaping - people think it's OK to do in other people's homes.

crumblingschools · 22/03/2024 09:20

@Telekoma I’m amazed they think it is acceptable to vape in your house if you don’t vape, that is so rude

I don’t want to see people walking down the road eating a pasty from Greggs then dropping their litter but there we are

Because I don't mind. I quite like the smell of them.
As I said up thread, I didn't and don't allow tobacco products to be smoked in my home.

No, you’ve misunderstood. A poster made a joke that vaping was causing me to not be able to read properly. I was responding to that. (Or perhaps you think vaping does have an effect on reading ability).

crumblingschools · 22/03/2024 09:21

@DaBlackCatsAreDaBestCats people can judge people who vape and people who drop litter, not mutually exclusive

Generally though, those people aren’t breathing pasty fumes over people walking past.
And of course it isn’t one or the other. Some of us neither breathe candy floss flavoured fumes on people, nor litter the streets with pasty wrappers.
