brushing hair at desk in office - Yea or Nay?

AIBU to brush my hair at my desk or should I go to the loo to brush it. For context share office with one other person who I doubt cares. But is it bad etiquette? I have long hair.

It depends - a quick tidy to put hair back in place wouldn’t bother me but I’ve seen people in open plan seating do the full on bed time 100 stroke routine at their desk!

Surely that intention is to be rid of dead hair etc in which case they must realise that their hair/flakes are likely to be dispersed on to neighbours? Bleugh!

I’ve also seen people clipping nails at their desk - again, I don’t want them to share their body waste.

Depends.

Quickly running a brush through short-ish hair to get the wind-knots out = fine.

Sitting down to luxuriously caress one's lengthy locks Disney princess style = no.

I agree.

Mermaidsarereal · 22/03/2024 14:21

I couldn't care less 😅 I don't personally take a brush to work but a colleague of mine does and regularly gives her hair a little brush through when she comes back from lunch and it has no effect on my life whatsoever! 😂

alexdgr8 · 23/03/2024 10:59

those who think it's ok to brush your hair in the living room of a flatshare, can you not see that's treating the place as if you own it.
as if the other people who live there don't matter, as you are taking over a common space to do personal grooming, which should be done in your bedroom or the bathroom.
i am trying to understand this attitude.
it is quite foreign to me, and slightly disconcerting.
such a difference in basic outlook among presumably respectable regular people.

I think it's less what you say and more that people don't consider brushing hair the same as plucking nose hair or clipping toenails. They see it more like applying hand cream or washing hands at the kitchen sink or applying lip balm to dry lips.

I agree. I didn't realise people got upset over people brushing hair.

CatamaranViper · 24/03/2024 13:52

It is absolutely fine. If you're that freaked out about stray hairs, I don't think you should be leaving the house

alexdgr8 · 24/03/2024 22:05

i wonder if this divides largely along generational lines.
i'd be interested if posters could ask older people whom they know, what they think of this.

I'm 50 but actually still think I'm young. I think brushing hair is fine. Who are these people that think it's bad to do so?

When people do this, it rarely all ends up in the brush. It ends up on the floor. It's easier to contain nail clippings.

Ponderingwindow · 24/03/2024 22:20

I would prefer you clipped your toenails at your desk over brushing your hair. All those skin flakes and hairs flying everywhere in the communal space are quite disturbing.

No offence but you obviously have no experience of super thick hair. Unless mine is long it is absolutely unmanageable- my hairdresser says I have as much hair as 3-4 people. Each hair isn’t particularly coarse (but is wavy) but I have so much of it. You could pull half out and I’d still look like I haven’t lost any.

Short it would literally be a triangle - no amount of hair straightening etc helps. If I wash it and don’t dry it, it stays damp underneath for 24hrs.

I do wear it down about half the time but for work it is often up as it is mad.

It is both a blessing and a curse 😂 it is absolutely indestructible when bleached/dyed/heat treated etc.

I would like some thin, limp hair. I was promised it would all fall out after birth. It didn’t. The bastard stuff is thicker than ever but just greying.

I have very thick hair and have it short, as does my male colleague. Plenty of men and boys have short thick hair.

PeloMom · 24/03/2024 22:27

No. Nope. I have long hair too

Many women don't want hair that is forecasting a better word, boy-short.

If hair is brushed whilst sitting at the desk the hairs will either come out in the brush or in your hand then bin. If hair isn't brushed it sheds. Like a long haired dog.
I guess I'd target people brushed once or twice at their desk than not at all.

ABwithAnItch · 25/03/2024 07:32

God no. Seriously? And why do you need to brush your hair at the office. Just do it at home.

Well I do….but by the time I’ve walked to work, it usually needs another brush.

So make a pit stop at the ladies on the way in and give it a brush. Seriously no one wants to observe personal grooming habits. Do you also clip your toenails and apply deo at your desk if you get a bit sweaty. Presumably you work in a professional environment. So go do it in the bathroom. Why is that so inconvenient?

Waitingforsomethinginteresting · 25/03/2024 08:23

@ABwithAnItch there is absolutely nothing wrong with brushing hair at your desk and I really don't understand why you're so worked up by the thought of it. I can't say I would even notice if a colleague brushed their hair, because I'm busy concentrating on my job and not looking for things to take offence at.

I don't notice the brushing, I notice all the hair.

Waitingforsomethinginteresting · 25/03/2024 08:34

@Kalevala how do you notice all the hair unless you're crawling around under their desk? also people shed hair all the time anyway and are more likely to if they've not brushed regularly

How about just 'short'? I'm a woman so my hair length is not 'boy-short'

It doesn't just end up on the floor, it gets caught up in work transferred to my desk and in shared spaces.

Waitingforsomethinginteresting · 25/03/2024 08:40

@Kalevala but how can you be certain what's a result of brushing and what's just natural shedding?

Ioverslept · 25/03/2024 08:41

Surely when you come in to work you can do it in the loo before sitting at your desk. I wouldn't do it or like my colleague doing it but since it's just one other person with you in the office maybe just ask her if she minds?
