brushing hair at desk in office - Yea or Nay?

BarrelOfOtters · 21/03/2024 09:28

AIBU to brush my hair at my desk or should I go to the loo to brush it. For context share office with one other person who I doubt cares. But is it bad etiquette? I have long hair.

I couldn’t care less. When I go into my office in a Friday there are only 2 other women usually and we’re pretty close as colleagues - I haven’t noticed either of them brushing their hair in the office but I wouldn’t be bothered if they did - maybe they do and I just haven’t seen it.
But if you’re paranoid about having messy hair and needing to carry a brush about surely the options are to brush it or secure it with clips/tie it up and out of the way.
I only comb through my quite curly hair when it’s wet and mostly clip it up for work so it doesn’t need fussing with.

Bathroom window. Are they yours?

😂No, I don't think so.

How can this happen? Is your window facing the neighbour's window? Very weird.

Sorry, I'm having a boring afternoon in the office.

Dryt · 21/03/2024 14:34

A few tidying stroke on short hair not a problem. But when someone with long hair gets right into a full on brushing session you do often see strands and flakes drifting off them and I don’t want that landing in my coffee no. When space is cramped it does also often come with a lot of flicking and flipping around and I hate people flicking their hair so it touches me. Even worse when it’s on public transport.

I wear mine in a clip as it would bug me down. I do adjust the clip sometimes if the hair gets lose and I do that infront my colleages. I've been known to reply my lipstick if I'm going out straight after work. I do draw a line at changing into my gym wear though and don't do that in the office.

I don't know, it's a mystery. They just appear on my windowsill. Somebody's garden is opposite my window, so perhaps the lady brushes her hair outside and they fly in with the wind Grin I'm pretty certain they're hers as they're very long and black.

I wouldn't like that either.

What's the point in having long hair if you're going to tie it back or plait it regularly? I tie mine back very occasionally if I'm doing something messy like decorating but wouldn't do anything with it otherwise. In all of my 66 years, I've never put my hair up and can't imagine that I ever will 😆😆

To save it from getting knotty as per my post? I have long hair, if I didn't tie it back sometimes I'd be constantly flicking it away from my face.

But each to their own, if you don't want to tie your hair back then that's your choice

LolaSmiles · 21/03/2024 14:53

Idontjetwashthefucker
I agree wth you. I've got long hair but I'm not spending my time brushing my hair multiple times a day at work just so I can swoosh it around.

If my day means my hair is likely to get messy and knotted easily, it gets tied up or put in a clip.

shearwater2 · 21/03/2024 14:56

I do but I have my own office. I do give it a quick brush at my desk when I come in.

Growlybear83 · 21/03/2024 14:58

@Idontjetwashthefucker As I said, it seems pointless to have long hair and then routinely tie it back or put it up. Why not just have short hair? 😆

Nanny0gg · 21/03/2024 15:03

Bottom line is, people of a certain age were taught not to do personal grooming in public although some women would apply lipstick. That would still have been considered 'common'. Certainly the way I was brought up

Times change. So you'll get different answers depending on who answers.

Because I don't want to have short hair, just because I have long hair doesn't mean I always have to wear it down, I do the majority of the time when I'm not at work but sometimes I like to tie it back when I can't be arsed with it. It's nice to have the option.

If you don't want to tie your hair up then that's fine too

AtomicBlondeRose · 21/03/2024 15:12

alexdgr8 · 21/03/2024 13:21

it seems obvious to me, that it ought not to be done.
but i'm astonished that someone else had no idea that brushing her hair in shared living room in flatshare, might cause complaints.
it just seems self-evident to me.
i wonder how some people are brought up.
perhaps this is why there is so much conflict and angry-ness nowadays.
basic awareness of others and consideration don't seem to be learnt while growing up, either in school or home ?
my school set such store by courtesy, more than study.
to lose your courtesy star was really bad. everyone started with one; lost by three order marks.
to win a study star was admirable, but not expected.

Brushing your hair in the living room of the place where you live is inconsiderate? I’ve heard it all now.

You do all realise that every single one of us is shedding hair, skin cells and gods knows what else all the time, right?

Because short hair looks shit on everyone apparently……

shearwater2 · 21/03/2024 15:23

Unless I had it at least as short as the longer bit on the number 6 picture, short hair is much harder for me to manage. Once it gets to number 7 it starts to kink out and stick up all over the show and I'd have to constantly use straighteners and product. I remember the pain of growing out a pixie cut!

I normally realise I have to do brush my hair when I put a zoom meeting on - ideally before anyone else has joined!

My desk though in my office.

because if I cut my hair short it's explodes to a huge mushroom head. it's so thick I keep it long for more manageable plus I have more choice with my hair. I tie it up high or low ponytail half up half down do different upstyles. have it donw straight or curly. or if want tie it up in big hun bun. that's the joys of having long hair you have choices and we are lucky we are allowed to have choices on our hair

No offence but you obviously have no experience of super thick hair. Unless mine is long it is absolutely unmanageable- my hairdresser says I have as much hair as 3-4 people. Each hair isn’t particularly coarse (but is wavy) but I have so much of it. You could pull half out and I’d still look like I haven’t lost any.

Short it would literally be a triangle - no amount of hair straightening etc helps. If I wash it and don’t dry it, it stays damp underneath for 24hrs.

I do wear it down about half the time but for work it is often up as it is mad.

It is both a blessing and a curse 😂 it is absolutely indestructible when bleached/dyed/heat treated etc.

I would like some thin, limp hair. I was promised it would all fall out after birth. It didn’t. The bastard stuff is thicker than ever but just greying.

you have described my hair to a t..if i won the lotto I would pay for a hairdresser to live in my house so she can do my hair on tap. I love it and get loads of compliments but god sometimes it's pain. has to be up when working though

LoobyDop · 21/03/2024 18:13

I don’t think it’s unhygienic, but it is inappropriate and unprofessional. I agree with the view that personal grooming, even if only hair brushing, should be done in private.

walkerscrispsarethenuts · 21/03/2024 18:13

No.

I don't think any personal habits should take place at your desk! 😀

icallitasplodge · 21/03/2024 18:16

Humans have hair. Brushing it or not, people are doing to have to face facts, we are shedding skin and air all the time. YANBU to have hair.
