brushing hair at desk in office - Yea or Nay?

AIBU to brush my hair at my desk or should I go to the loo to brush it. For context share office with one other person who I doubt cares. But is it bad etiquette? I have long hair.

It’s brushing hair, not changing a tampon. It’s perfectly fine and normal to run a brush through your hair at your desk.

(I suspect being repulsed by hair-brushing is one of those things that only actually occurs on Mumsnet, along with people who get annoyed by being given flowers and people who think it’s antisocial to wear perfume.)

My colleague (sits next to me in open plan office) does this and I find it so so strange

No. The cloakroom is there for a purpose. I wouldn't want other people's hair on my desk.

How small is your office that hair would end up on your desk? Or do you have some sort of indoor wind machine that would blow it in your direction?

Hairs are falling off us all the time as we walk around. At least if it's being brushed it's likely to be caught and can be dropped into a bin under the desk.

KimberleyClark · 21/03/2024 09:43

A lot of people with long hair don’t realise how it can impinge on other people’s personal space.

I wouldn’t get upset about it but yes it’s bad manners imo.

MadamVastra · 21/03/2024 09:44

God forbid if I go to apply lipstick at my desk

MardyBigBum · 21/03/2024 09:44

This doesn’t bother me in slightest. It’s just a few brushstrokes to neaten up long hair, not a full on styling session with copious amounts of pungent hairspray.

Namechange25793 · 21/03/2024 09:46

No, it’s quite rude

Dontdeclutterthemagic · 21/03/2024 09:48

My shoulder length thick hair gets messy so quickly that the walk from the bathroom to my desk (up a floor and right across) would undo any brushing in the bathroom! I do run a brush through at my desk especially before a meeting. So does everyone else. Had no idea this could be an issue!

MartinsSpareCalculator · 21/03/2024 09:51

Why are people going on about personal space? Someone brushing their hair at their own desk isn't impeding on anybody else's space at all.

Honestly I'm struggling to see what's rude about it. I've never noticed if people do it or not, probably because I just don't care.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 21/03/2024 09:52

It wouldn't particularly bother me, although probably something to just do before an important meeting rather than numerous times every day.

BobbyBiscuits · 21/03/2024 09:52

I think it's the type of hair. Mine is really awful and I shed loads when I brush, so it just would make a mess. Some people dislike the sound of the knots being pulled through. If it was short then not so much, but then someone could have dandruff.
Where I used to work there was a lot of hair brushing going on in the bathrooms and people would just leave it all over the floor, which is equally gross.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 21/03/2024 09:53

I wouldn’t even notice.

Ive never had colleagues brushing their hair though.

MadamVastra · 21/03/2024 09:54

Hair does not impinge on personal space! get a (hair) grip!

BrioNotBiro · 21/03/2024 09:54

Nay

redalex261 · 21/03/2024 09:57

Yuck no. I don’t get why anyone would do that, just do it when taking trip to loo. How bad can hair get sitting at desk?

FastFood · 21/03/2024 09:59

Wouldn't care at all.

BreakTea · 21/03/2024 10:02

I have a thing about (loose) hair. I know most people don't think thst hair is disgusting but it would make me really uncomfortable. I also hate when there is hair on the floor of restrooms. If you have to brush your hair in public please pick up any loose strands and throw them in the bin...

scrimblescramble · 21/03/2024 10:03

I brush my hair at my desk once or twice a day. My hair goes down to my bum and I have to do this to ensure it doesn't get too knotty or static. No one has ever had a problem with this, I doubt they even notice! Only on MN would this be deemed unacceptable because it's so 'grim'🙄

AtomicBlondeRose · 21/03/2024 10:05

I have never in my life seen someone brushing their hair in the loo at work. I do mine at my desk all the time. It takes ten seconds.

ClaudiaWankleman · 21/03/2024 10:06

Wouldn't bother me. It's not like you're brushing it over someone else's desk. PP talking about scalp on desks are being completely ridiculous.

Plus, loose hairs are much more likely to come out over someone else's desk if they haven't been brushed out and collected in the brush of course.

SIacker · 21/03/2024 10:07

Wouldn't bother me at all.

middleofthenightmediumsizedtoblerone · 21/03/2024 10:08

BarrelOfOtters · 21/03/2024 09:41

Right, it seems to be a no from a lot of people. I've been wondering.

It wouldn't bother me at all unless the person had bad dandruff or nits.

KimberleyClark · 21/03/2024 10:09

Long hair seems very high maintenance going by all the brushing it needs. I’d comb my hair if I’d been out for a walk at lunchtime otherwise it never needs it.

HelenHywater · 21/03/2024 10:11

I do it when I get into the office as the walk there has made it messy (long straight hair that kind of sticks together when it's not recently brushed). I do it as I take my coat off. Go to the loo to check lipstick and things.

My office is fairly empty though and no one at the desks near me. It takes a few seconds.
