brushing hair at desk in office - Yea or Nay?

AIBU to brush my hair at my desk or should I go to the loo to brush it. For context share office with one other person who I doubt cares. But is it bad etiquette? I have long hair.

OP posts:
Growlybear83 · 21/03/2024 10:13

My hair is long and I need to brush it several times during the day to stop it from tangling. In the days when I worked in an office, I did brush it at my desk at times, but tried to do so when I was in the room alone. It was always drummed into me from an early age by my grandma and mother that it's rude to brush your hair in public and that it should be done in your bedroom or a cloakroom if you're out. I think this goes back to the days when it was very common to have headlice and brushing your hair was quite likely to spread lice and nits around.

MaggieFS · 21/03/2024 10:14

To those saying is it really a bother/ only on mn / get a life... totally agree... if someone actually did this in the office I probably wouldn't bat an eyelid. If they did it repeatedly, I might find it a bit odd. If they did it NEAR me so I was in the target zone for bits of scalp, lose hairs and so on, I probably would say something.

But it isn't really something I've considered until the OP asked. And she did, so I had a one second think and said YABU.

No new life required 😀

MonsteraMama · 21/03/2024 10:17

I wouldn't personally because I have very long thick hair and shed like a golden retriever so wouldn't want to deposit hairs all over my colleagues by accident. I keep mine tied back at work anyway, but the amount of random hairs my husband finds all over him in the weirdest places would indicate that brushing my hair in the office might be considered a crime.

Topseyt123 · 21/03/2024 09:36

Brush it wherever you want to. It's fine. You're tidying up your hair, not scratching your arse.

I see no issues and doubt I would even notice if someone did this.

This...

TheHorneSection · 21/03/2024 10:24

Quick brush and some lippy or powder before a meeting is perfectly normal.

Full styling and a full face of make up maybe not so much.

AlltheFs · 21/03/2024 10:25

It wouldn’t bother me in the slightest. I do mine in my office along with make up but I don’t share with anyone.

Portakalkedi · 21/03/2024 10:29

No, the office is not the place for personal grooming, why can't you just go to the toilets?

dontcryformeargentina · 21/03/2024 10:41

No if you sit close to other people.

Tessisme · 21/03/2024 10:44

I wouldn't be too keen to be honest. But I wouldn't automatically assume you were in the wrong for doing it because every-feckin-thing annoys me, so I'm beginning to think I'm a bit out of step😅

Mercurial123 · 21/03/2024 10:44

Brushing hair is fine. I had a colleague who would belch, hiccup, talk to himself, and eat smelly food at his desk. He was a nightmare.

RaininSummer · 21/03/2024 10:49

Blimey. I run a brush through my quickly every day on arrival at desk as I always look windswept after battling the elements.

luckylavender · 21/03/2024 10:49

No

fancyfrogs · 21/03/2024 10:50

Wouldn't bother me

DrJoanAllenby · 21/03/2024 10:53

I have very long hair and I brush it morning and night. No need to brush during the day as in the morning I give it a spray with hair spray that allows movement but the hair doesn't get tangled.

SirenSays · 21/03/2024 10:54

I never do because people are weird about it but it wouldn't bother me.
Everyone says go to the loo, but on all the public loo threads there are people complaining they're desperately waiting for the people by the mirrors to leave so they can go in peace.

Blarn · 21/03/2024 10:54

I occasionally give the ends a quick swipe the the brush if it was windy when I get in. But I have a bob and one run of the brush is all it needs. Wouldn't sit there running a brush from root to tip and wouldn't if my hair was very long only because it does shred hairs everywhere.

bradpittsbathwater · 21/03/2024 11:03

I brush mine a lot throughout the day as it's long and looks like a birds nest if I don't. I share my office with one other person and we don't sit close to each other. If we did then I would go to the toilets

Giggorata · 21/03/2024 11:10

Undertaking any form of personal grooming in public is bad manners, so I was always taught. Doing private things in public always seems a bit self centred to me.
But people don't care about that sort of thing any more, although some object for hygiene reasons.

Orangeecats · 21/03/2024 11:23

The responses on this are bizarre!

I don’t regularly brush my hair at my desk but definitely have given it a quick brush before and never once thought it was an odd or inappropriate thing to do!

Now I’m wondering if the very few people also in the office thought it was grim

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 21/03/2024 11:25

Mazuslongtoenail · 21/03/2024 09:34

Christ, people are actually bothered by this kind of thing?!

Agreed. I honestly don't care if someone brushes their hair or what they have for dinner at their desk. It's called being a grown-up

Waitingforsomethinginteresting · 21/03/2024 11:28

How are people getting this upset by other people brushing their hair? Just let people get on with it

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 21/03/2024 11:29

Mazuslongtoenail · 21/03/2024 09:34

Christ, people are actually bothered by this kind of thing?!

I know, right? Couldn't care less tbh.

RunningFromInsanity · 21/03/2024 11:29

BarrelOfOtters · 21/03/2024 09:41

Right, it seems to be a no from a lot of people. I've been wondering.

Don’t confused MN opinions with actual opinions. MN is a weird place.

Wexone · 21/03/2024 11:30

Give it a quick brush once in a blue moo, however i have long hair and cant bare my hair down when i am working so its always tied up out of the way so no need for brushing

Someonescatmum · 21/03/2024 11:31

It's clear that some people feel uncomfortable about it, so I think it's a no!
