brushing hair at desk in office - Yea or Nay?

AIBU to brush my hair at my desk or should I go to the loo to brush it. For context share office with one other person who I doubt cares. But is it bad etiquette? I have long hair.

Who cares? It’s totally fine and seeing as people drop hairs and skin cells everywhere constantly it’s really no big deal.

pinkmushroom5 · 21/03/2024 09:38

Wouldn't bother me and I'm surprised at the number of people who would care.

Same. Why would you need to keep brushing your hair at work? Is it a windy office?
If you do your hair when you arrive at work surely it doesn't need doing again?

BarrelOfOtters · 21/03/2024 13:17

Get people's points about how often you have to brush hair. I walk to work so need to on arrival - literally drag a brush through it - takes 2 seconds. Then before a meeting can be nice too. After lunch if I've been out. Or if come in from a meeting.

But it's not a full on style....

I couldn’t care less, but others can be weird about this sort of thing. Some don’t like people putting make up on in public. I cannot understand why. It isn’t noisy, smelly, dirty or intrusive. I assume it is snobbery.

@Ggttl

I'm 55, I don't remember being told to do private grooming in private, but it must be something I absorbed as a child.

I don't have a problem with people brushing their hair or applying make up in public, not at all. But I find it odd, kind of vain (especially the make up) I don't understand how they don't feel self conscious.

the worst thing is trying not to stare!! I like seeing what they are using & how they're applying it - and, of course, the transformation.

I prefer people to think I wake up this gorgeous & it's not through priduct & application ability!!

just kidding, I don't wear make & have lines that look like trenches & the saggy jowls to match!!

harriettenightingale · 21/03/2024 13:18

Now I’m wondering if the very few people also in the office thought it was grim

Who cares? Don't waste a second thinking about it, I'm sure these people, including the ones on this thread, have their own annoying habits too. I've literally never considered it would be a problem for anyone else for me to brush my hair at my own desk and I don't intend to start thinking it is now.

alexdgr8 · 21/03/2024 13:21

it seems obvious to me, that it ought not to be done.
but i'm astonished that someone else had no idea that brushing her hair in shared living room in flatshare, might cause complaints.
it just seems self-evident to me.
i wonder how some people are brought up.
perhaps this is why there is so much conflict and angry-ness nowadays.
basic awareness of others and consideration don't seem to be learnt while growing up, either in school or home ?
my school set such store by courtesy, more than study.
to lose your courtesy star was really bad. everyone started with one; lost by three order marks.
to win a study star was admirable, but not expected.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 21/03/2024 13:21

Couldn't care less if someone brushed their hair in the office, but to those saying it gets knotty if you don't brush it, why not tie it up or plait it to keep it tidy?

Jeannne92 · 21/03/2024 13:24

This is gross and unprofessional. Just do it in the toilet.

You’re right I couldn’t care less!

unless anyone says anything to me (which they won’t) I am going to carry on. And so should you OP!

Totally fine

The responses here are bonkers

Everyone brushes their hair at the desk in my company. Does make up too

We're all clean

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 21/03/2024 11:49

Personal grooming should take place in private, or in a dedicated space such as a cloakroom.

We are talking about brushing hair on head not trimming your pubic hair.

buzzlightyearsaway · 21/03/2024 13:59

@middleofthenightmediumsizedtoblerone

Was thinking the same

buzzlightyearsaway · 21/03/2024 14:00

Should people go to the loo to scratch an itch?

What's the point in having long hair if you're going to tie it back or plait it regularly? I tie mine back very occasionally if I'm doing something messy like decorating but wouldn't do anything with it otherwise. In all of my 66 years, I've never put my hair up and can't imagine that I ever will 😆😆

thinkfast · 21/03/2024 14:05

That would be REALLY bad manners. Personal grooming should be done in the bathrooms. Definitely not at your desk!

That sounds awful to me. Really unprofessional. Do you all sit at your desks gargling mouthwash and flossing your teeth too?

Depends where it is.

Not all offices are the same though.

I share an office with a male coleague who sits about 6 metres away from me. The only comment he would make if I brushed my hair is that I was doing it to make him jealous as he is bald.

You are being dramatic. Brushing your hair is not the same as flossing your teeth.

Strange post and even stranger writing style. Reminds me of a bad poem published by a newspaper editor with a sense of humour.

mamakoukla · 21/03/2024 14:14

It’d be a no from me; had this in an open plan office. Everyone complained behind her back. In fairness, there was a bit of shedding…

AntonFeckoff · 21/03/2024 14:24

No, it would trigger the visual equivalent of misophonia (misopia?)

I also have a thing about other people's hair strands. For some reason I occasionally get strands of another woman's hair come in through my window. It makes me shudder.

Bathroom window. Are they yours?

SallyWD · 21/03/2024 14:29

I had no idea this was seen as bad. I always give my hair a very quick brush (like three brush strokes maximum) when I arrive. No one else is seated anywhere near me so they're not getting hairs on their desks or anything. I feel bad now!
