Why is there absolutely no way to access money?

I lost my bank card last Friday. This bank does not have any emergency cash option. I ordered a replacement bank card. It should be with me at the end of next week.

I have another bank account with a different bank. I just opened it a couple of weeks ago. So no money in it yet. I have a bank card for the second account.

On friday eve , i tried to transfer money from my first bank account to my second bank account using the mobile apps.

It said on the app that if you transfer at the weekend , it won't go through till the next business day. Next Monday is a bank holiday in ireland, so the transfer won't go through until Tuesday.

I've then tried to download revolut, as it is meant to do instant transfers even at weekends.

Revolut won't work for me, as no matter how many times I've taken different photos of my passport, it says the passport is not clear enough.

I really need to access my money to pay for something next Monday. I can't wait till tuesday.

Is there absolutely no way to access money without a bank card. ?

I am glad it has been sorted. It is always wise to keep 100 in euros in the house just in case.
Also be aware Revelut is not signed up to various bank protection schemes. I would avoid it.

I did have 100 euros in my house.

It didn't help me as I needed to pay for something online. I could only pay for it with card. They didn't accept cash

Those that are amazed that processes are run more efficiently in what most describe as this ‘shithole country’ always make me laugh.

Try to get anything done in Spain, France that requires local government involvement then tell me how much you hate brexit Britain. I’ll wait here.

Mine are instant too, even at weekends - HSBC and Co-operative. I thought that was standard now.

No it isn't.
Only in the UK it is

Can you not just use your credit card until it arrives?

Do you think that everyone has a credit card?

I only know one person that still uses a credit card, as they are notorious for being the worst way to get into long term debt with high interest rates

They go through on the next business day.

I am with Santander my husband NatWest; any transfers either of us make go through instantly even if its a Sunday or night time. Are you certain your bank is different? Also when I lost my bank card and a new one was issued my apple pay wallet on my phone was updated instantly so I was able to carry on as usual

Do a lot of people on here use credit cards?

Out of interest.

I personally don't know anyone that uses a credit card, except one person

Most people I know seem to all be of the opinion that they are a fools game, designed to get you into debt

Do you have friends or family that could withdraw money from their account and you transfer money to them digitally - if they can afford the delay in waiting for the funds

idontlikealdi · 17/03/2024 15:35

I'm trying to imagine how my kids would cope without instant transfers!

Hope you get it sorted op.

Ok but say you need £100, you transfer £100 to your brother/nan/MIL/best friend/whoever etc... they go to a cash point withdraw £100 and give it to you. They then automatically get re-payed £100 on Tuesday.

It's a loan that technically paid before you even get the cash.

Gowlbag · 17/03/2024 15:43

AIB customer here. Sent my daughter money last night from my account. She was out spending it in the pub before I’d put my phone away. Never had any issues with instant transfers on any weekend.
Also I must shop online way too much. I know my card number, expiration date and secret magic number on the back, off by heart. I very rarely have to get my actual card out to pay for anything online.

Not everyone, even family members, will be happy with doing that though. As they may have prior commitments.

The first person I asked in my family didn't want to do it for me, because she is so busy herself this weekend..

I eventually found someone who was OK to do it for me

Wow! That's a long number to memorise. Good for you.
I must try to learn the next one off by heart

Yes I have a credit card linked to amazon, ebay, etc. I have it set up so it pays the balance off in full each month so no interest charges. You also get more protection with larger purchases if you make at least a part payment with a credit card e.g. we part pay by credit card when we pay for a holiday abroad.

NC03 · 17/03/2024 15:52

I would recommend zilch if you don't already have an account but not sure it's available where you are so might be worth a look
You can link it to Apple Pay, or use their virtual card and if you pay in one go (it has pay over time offers too) there's no charge and it debits from your bank account
It's saved me when I lost my bank card!

AIB to AIB transfers will be instant (and I presume this applies to other 'same bank transfers'). It's when transferring from one bank to another that there's a delay, though in my experience it's often quicker than the times stated by the bank.

Freakinfraser · 17/03/2024 15:53

Yes I have Amex, I pay the full balance each month, you get additional protection with a credit card.

AppropriateAdult · 17/03/2024 15:55

As for Revolut, I can transfer money to it instantly from my AIB card using Apple Pay - there's no delay regardless of when it's done. (I appreciate that's no help to the OP now!)

I don't have Applepay as that is only on iphones.

But I presume that Google pay is similiar

Bank of ireland

The Bank of Ireland is really bad for technical stuff. They're years behind the other banks in Ireland. Lots of people were reportedly leaving them because they weren't able to implement Apple Pay or the Android equivalent for several years after the other Irish banks. Their IT is a mess.

If you are paying online then just use PayPal?
