AIBU - Weeing in lay-bys is anti social and fines should apply

Item in the news- Dacorum Borough Council have stopped issuing fines for wild wees in lay-bys.
I know that this is on a technicality (anti littering law used and wild wees not classed as litter) but I think people weeing in lay-bys is appalling. It should be subject to fines. I can forgive toddlers/ young children but not adults. There are solutions for those with medical conditions that mean urgent wees are a symptom. And it’s always men. Women need urgent wees too (possibly more so, pregnancy etc) and we don’t pull up in lay-bys and squat in front of passing traffic. AIBU?

Can't believe no one's made a joke about a sense of Dacorum

🤣🤣

well done, I was too busy thinking 'where the fuck is that?'

LlynTegid · 17/03/2024 11:56

@TheGhostOfKatesProlapse some people seem to completely lack an ability to plan ahead, I agree.

The person who commented about public toilets being closed or not provided because of the way some are treated is spot on. Also contributing is local authorities being short of money, and for some male toilets, those who use them to meet other men for sexual purposes.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 17/03/2024 11:57

@Cornettoninja we live close to a motorway so there are several lay-bys on the run up to it. Our road is being treated as a lay-by as the others are so busy. The next one along has a bloody portaloo and lots of bins as there's a cafe in a portacabin there but people still piss on the roadside and don't use the bins for their rubbish. People are just disgusting.

The council don't respond to any complaints.

My OH bought one of these for me for when we're out walking in the countryside.

Utterly useless, wee everywhere all over my shoes and trousers.

I'd love to know how people use these successfully

@soupfiend

i can't work it out either!

Especially now I'm older, I might have managed when much younger. I don't know why wee starts preferring to go in every direction as you age, but it seems common. I haven't even birthed children or anything?!

Anywat, try not to let this thread upset you. You do what you need to, when you need to 🌷

Thriftnugget · 17/03/2024 12:00

On the contrary @IFHTTBIC I live in a rural location and I’m definitely not averse to a bucolic wild wee tucked away from sight and not adding my urine to a collection which will inevitably make a public area unpleasant. Maybe you missed the point of my post which was specifically about public urination in lay-bys. Quite a difference. @WillJeSuis why does weeing into a shewee need to be done in motion? If it’s possible to stop to pee in full view on a lay-by then surely you can stop to use a portable urinal?
so many people here seem so affronted by the idea that they should be challenged for pissing in an area that’s neither suitable nor appropriate to be used as a toilet. Portable urinals are affordable and easy to purchase. If you are someone who might need the toilet urgently why would you not prepare for that by getting one? And of course take it home to empty.
I stand by my initial position- it’s always men I see doing it and I agree with those that say it’s another example of male entitlement. Bet the people who decided to scrap the fines are men too! (Last bit added for provocation).

Totally. They are supposed to make it easier and more discreet but I find you have to pull your trousers down a fair bit so you are still standing there with your arse hanging out. And unless you've angled it correctly the wee will just back flow all over your hands and clothes. I'd rather squat thanks.

MissingMoominMamma · 17/03/2024 12:03

I’ve weed in laybys. If my (weak) bladder starts to hurt, I’m going to be very distracted at the wheel.

JPGR · 17/03/2024 12:05

Do you think dogs shouldn’t wee either? Maybe they also should carry a contraption.

It doesn't have to be done in motion but you do need to be standing up, which you obviously can't do in a car.

To be fair, I'm not disagreeing with you about the whole roadside weeing issue. Just the portable urinal in the car - for women anyway, I don't think it's really a solution.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 17/03/2024 12:08

it’s always men I see doing it

That's because men can wee standing up anywhere, whereas women have to squat and go somewhere a bit more hidden.

WhatHoJeeves · 17/03/2024 12:15

There definitely aren't enough public toilets in this country. I have no problem with an emergency wee, done discreetly.

However, in our area, I've seen men over the past few years standing in full view of traffic and walkers, a big stream of wee flowing. They could stand behind their car, by the hedge, but no, they're right in the open. It feels like a deliberate act to do it so publicly. It is definitely a new thing as I didn't see any men doing it this openly until recently.

Thriftnugget · 17/03/2024 12:19

@WhatHoJeeves Exactly this.
No problem with wild wees per se. There’s nuance and some people don’t get that it seems.

Thriftnugget · 17/03/2024 08:59

@VladsPants upset is overstating it but it’s pretty gross to pull up in a lay-by that stinks like a massive urinal. (Have experienced that). @PanadTe you are right, we are massively behind in this way.
I do have the utmost respect for people with a medical reason for urgency…, been there to a degree and so did my late father.
I bet most people who do “invest” in a solution and aren’t the ones blatantly pissing in front of the passing traffic and making lay-bys stink.

You don’t think it more likely stinks because people’s dogs have been let out on leads? I see that more often than people. And I can’t get that worked up about it.

Chonk · 17/03/2024 12:22

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 17/03/2024 10:13

Don't be ridiculous! My OH is a Truck driver. One drop takes him around 3 hours to get too and there isn't anywhere other than lay by's in which he can pull into should he need to go for a piss. It's not like he park a 26 tonne Truck up a side street so he wonder round trying to find a toilet and nor should he have to not drink anything until he either gets to his drop or back to depot

@IBegYourBiggestPardon Your OH is the one being ridiculous by not being prepared for a situation which is likely to occur. Why can't he pull over and use a portable male urinal in his cab, seal it and then empty it into a toilet at the next services? Too lazy?

TesticularHeft · 17/03/2024 12:24

I drive a lot for work and I always see men weeing. I often see their piss stream and that offends me. I once saw a man doing a shit in a lay-by. I couldn't see it but he was squatting trousers down. Half of me was disgusted and part of me felt bad a she must have been caught short/ill etc.

DP has a 250ml bladder at most and has been known to enjoy a few beers as we drive ti a holiday destination or maybe for a day out. We constantly have to pull over but he is discreet and polite about it. doesn't stop me being mortified. he is his own person so it is what it is.

Hopingitsahornyfinger · 17/03/2024 12:28

Bulkypeepants · 17/03/2024 08:56

Yep, it is always men. I've peed outside before, but not in view of the public. Don't know why men feel so entitled that they think it's acceptable for everyone else to have to watch them empty their bladder. YANBU.

Totally agree - YANBU Op!

ringoutsolsticebells · 17/03/2024 12:30

I would rather the incredible amount of litter on our highways and byways was dealt with, it's a far bigger and more unsightly problem.

Yes agree about the litter and don't understand people doing this

suburburban · 17/03/2024 12:33

Also if people are on tight driving schedules or working in a remote location it can be difficult to have accessible toilets

Loubelle70 · 17/03/2024 12:33

We never know anyones medical condition . My daughter had colitis...my sister incontinence...men still have urinary issues. Yes you said bar anyone with medical issues but policing that? Embarassing.
Sometimes cant wait and its urgent. Just make sure try to limit what others can view

BigHoops · 17/03/2024 12:34

Not sure how old you are OP but you would have hated the early 80s - the drive to my grandparents took around three hours and service stations weren't really much of a thing or certainly not on that route. So mid journey we'd all stop in the same layby for a wee although was usually just me, DB and DM, DF wouldn't.

Yes it's not ideal and obvs in this day and age there are many service stations. But if you're stuck in traffic and may not be able to get to a ss for another hour or so and you're desperate...well there's no judgement here. I suffer from a very weak bladder and prolapse issues which mean if I 'hold it in' it's actually much worse for me. I've never had to resort to a layby wee as an adult but to know it's an option helps my anxiety.

Although don't think I've ever seen anyone weeing in a layby for years now??

Callie222 · 17/03/2024 12:35

@soupfiend I said it was a DIY back seat loo Easter Grin Let me spell it out for you. I kneel on back seat, put the jug over my fanjo and wee in it. If i can i throw it in the hedge, if not then a bottle until I can dispose of it properly. I wipe and put the paper in a nappy sack and tie it up. I rinse the jug and spray it with anti bac. Then I wash my hands.

Oh I forgot to mention that I pull my trousers back up before continuing my journey. Sometimes I do a moonie at a passing coach of football supporters if I'm in a mischievous mood.

tryingtohelp82 · 17/03/2024 12:35

@SpringSprungALeak No I tried them as a teenager and it went everywhere!

tryingtohelp82 · 17/03/2024 12:37

@suburburban Grim isn't it, I walk along A roads a lot and the litter is horrific. Some people blame it on foreign lorry drivers with different standards in their countries but it's always been like this. I see cars chucking stuff out. So many animals about
