AIBU - Weeing in lay-bys is anti social and fines should apply

Thriftnugget · 17/03/2024 08:27

Item in the news- Dacorum Borough Council have stopped issuing fines for wild wees in lay-bys.
I know that this is on a technicality (anti littering law used and wild wees not classed as litter) but I think people weeing in lay-bys is appalling. It should be subject to fines. I can forgive toddlers/ young children but not adults. There are solutions for those with medical conditions that mean urgent wees are a symptom. And it’s always men. Women need urgent wees too (possibly more so, pregnancy etc) and we don’t pull up in lay-bys and squat in front of passing traffic. AIBU?

I'm with you op, and on motorways there's loads of services so can't see the problem with stopping at them. Modern tech means it's easier than ever to locate somewhere to stop. That said when caught in a 3 hour traffic jam on the m25 a few years back it was hilarious for my DD's and I seeing the line of men along the hard shoulder edge weeing, a lesson in men being pathetic we thought as we hung on until whatever was the cause was finally sorted out and we eventually made fleet services on the m3. I wouldn't let (now ex) h out the car saying if we had to wait so did heGrin

Waffleson · 17/03/2024 08:59

I can't get wound up about someone having a discrete discreet wee. What I do find strange is that noone minds dogs pissing all over the place but when humans do it it's suddenly terrible.

Thriftnugget · 17/03/2024 08:59

@VladsPants upset is overstating it but it’s pretty gross to pull up in a lay-by that stinks like a massive urinal. (Have experienced that). @PanadTe you are right, we are massively behind in this way.
I do have the utmost respect for people with a medical reason for urgency…, been there to a degree and so did my late father.
I bet most people who do “invest” in a solution and aren’t the ones blatantly pissing in front of the passing traffic and making lay-bys stink.

If you must be discreet is what we are saying, behind bushes onto undergrowth not onto tarmac in full view of passers by

shellyleppard · 17/03/2024 09:01

Op its not always matter of being lazy......my dad had bladder cancer (now recovered) but sometimes he has to go urgently. He always tries to find a discreet spot.....but not everyone having a wild pee is a lazy person

gould · 17/03/2024 09:03

We have bigger issues, fly-tipping in laybys for one.

IamnotSethRogan · 17/03/2024 09:04

I am a women and I pull into lay bys to pee. I've always had a pretty weak bladder and it can be a nightmare on long journeys. I don't think it should be illegal but I do think people should practice some discretion. I wouldn't just squat by the side of the road I'd hide behind a bush.

Cornettoninja · 17/03/2024 09:05

I don’t think I’ve ever had cause to pull up in a lay-by? Even when with a baby dd… tell a lie, dd was desperate when she was about 5/6 so we pulled up and climbed a fence to find a tree for her to squat behind. Dunno what the fence was for but we were probably trespassing.

more widely though, I don’t really have an issue, there are plenty of very long a roads with no where to to pull off and find a garage or something. There are absolutely medical issues that make holding it harder but even in the completely healthy, sometimes you really have to go.

Magnastorm · 17/03/2024 09:06

Meh. Who cares, it's just wee. Doesn't hurt anyone or anything.

InTheRainOnATrain · 17/03/2024 09:07

Meh, pee is sterile, ok so it’s a bit wiffy but I couldn’t get upset about it. You don’t know who has a medical condition, lots of older chaps have prostate issues for example, and I’ve just got through potty training with DS2 so I’d be a hypocrite to complain about humans peeing outdoors 🤣 So long as it’s discreet and it’s somewhere a dog would pee then whatever. Now all the dog poo al over the pavements, that’s a real issue and really fucking disgusting.

Cornettoninja · 17/03/2024 09:07

how do you know the ones you’re talking about don’t? These issues are pretty common.

soupfiend · 17/03/2024 09:09

Is about being discreet.

I am required to drink 2ltrs of liquid a day, I never make that amount but even on a smaller amount it leaves me needing the toilet a lot and at my age it comes on very suddenly. Im afraid I have had accidents.

There arent enough toilets and if you get stuck in traffic you're done for.

Weeing is a natural thing, it needs to happen when it needs to happen. I try to take the opportunity to whereever there is a toilet but that doesnt always save me.

And I dont know what medical solutions you are referring to OP, age is something that you cant medicate yourself out of.

Tumbleweed101 · 17/03/2024 09:11

We need better facilities to stop it rather blaming those caught short in a traffic jam.

Travelling in Canada and the US was a much nicer experience. There were toilets dotted along the highway within about a 15min drive from the last one, even without other services alongside them. Every place we visited had customer toilets too.

onawave · 17/03/2024 09:11

There was a time years ago when I got stuck in a 7 hour jam because of the dartford bridge being closed that involved a Costa coffee cup and me contorting myself into a position that was pretty undignified. I wish I'd been able to get to a lay-by.

How do know whether they have medical conditions or not? Do you pull over and check?

I have no diagnosis but I've always had a weak bladder and if I'm desperate, I'm going to pull over otherwise it becomes painful and distracting and ultimately quite dangerous if I'm trying to concentrate on the road.

I'm not going to "invest in a solution" either.

You sound really ignorant and I hope you never get to a position where you cant wait. Forcing your OH to not go to the toilet its abusive.

Not everyone travels on motorways where there are services. And I can go at one services but still need to go before the next one unfortunately

Lots of little local garages you find on A roads dont have toilets in them and Ive also found on the toilet app, that making your way to a toilet doesnt mean its open.

Tumbleweed101 · 17/03/2024 09:13

Facilities closing during the pandemic led to a lot of wild wees in places like seaside towns. Its either we provide services or people will have answer the call of nature in less than ideal places.

gannett · 17/03/2024 09:13

Focus your energy on campaigning for an improvement in the appalling provision of public loos in this country then. Just turning your nose up because "it's disgusting" doesn't cut it.

Correct. I would reserve your ire for people who pee in the street. Now that is disgusting

TheGreatGherkin · 17/03/2024 09:16

There is something about an al fresco wee and having a breeze blowing on your cheeks. This is something I can't get worked up about, if you've got to go you've got to go. Urine is good for plants anyway, plenty of nitrogen.

No, reserve your ire for councils who've shut public loos, and governments which have forced them to do so by slashing funding.

Good lord people on this site just love to look down at individuals rather than look up to get angry at the actual causes.

@Ofcourseshecan Well I’ve had 3 kids, interstitial cystitis (and an enormous ovarian cyst) so you could say I have had a share of desperate for a wee experiences …. But I’ve never had a wee in a lay-by. Also … she-wees/ and whatever they are called for men (large necked bottle!) for those who need them. …?

Bully for you and well done OP

Unfortunately not everyone is perfect like you.

Soontobe60 · 17/03/2024 09:19

Bulkypeepants · 17/03/2024 08:56

Yep, it is always men. I've peed outside before, but not in view of the public. Don't know why men feel so entitled that they think it's acceptable for everyone else to have to watch them empty their bladder. YANBU.

You do know that when you’re driving you should be keeping your eyes on the road don’t you?

MiltonNorthern · 17/03/2024 09:20

I have peed in lay-bys several times. YABU.
