To feel sorry for the Tories?

The Conservative Party are a British institution. The most successful political party in the democratic world. They're going through a bad time at the moment and have been dealt a bad hand. They inherited a global financial crash which the western world is still to recover from and then a once in a lifetime pandemic which has further crippled the economy. Now there's wars in Gaza and Ukraine. Really unfortunate circumstances for them to operate in.

It looks like they're going to get a really bloody nose in the next election. Starmer has taken the centre ground and now Reform are starting to steal their MPs as well as voters. Now even their biggest donor is caught up in a scandal. When it rains it pours.

How can they recover from this? Can they recover from this?

The Tories are the great survivors but it's hard to see how they can win the next election, or maybe even the one after that.

😂😂😂 You’re either a cack-handed YouGov pollster or a Daily Mail reporter. Get in the effin sea.

SomersetTart · 13/03/2024 18:22

Hard to feel sorry for this lot........

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has resisted opposition calls to return money to a Conservative donor who reportedly said MP Diane Abbott "should be shot".

The PM said Frank Hester's alleged comments were "wrong" and "racist".
But he repeatedly told MPs Mr Hester had apologised and his "remorse should be accepted".
Mr Hester has donated more than £10m to the Tories and in November gifted Mr Sunak the use of a helicopter for a political visit, valued at £15,000.

In a twisted way, I'm glad they won the last election as it's shown us who the Tory party really are. A bunch of self serving, off shore and trust funding incompetents.

Oh I wish the OP would come back to comment. Either version of her would do.

LlynTegid · 13/03/2024 18:24

They are not the most successful party in the democratic world. I'm sure that the Democrats or Republicans in the US would argue each they are more successful, Fianna Fail in the Irish Republic, and the CDU in Germany. Probably some examples in other countries I am not aware of.

Far from being sorry for them, I'm fucking delighted and the GE can't come soon enough for me.

The only thing I'm sorry about is the billions it's going to cost to fix the NHS, school buildings, housing crisis etc. The next government is going to have a massive task on its hands, possibly the biggest since rebuilding the country after the war.

This.

YAB so U I don't know where to start.

Naaah, they're like gingers - no soul.

I'm not going to say what I actually think of you @StaunchMomma because it would get me banned. But try replacing the word 'ginger' in that with any other group - 'fat people' would do it, if you like - and see how that sounds then.

And don't tell me it was 'just a joke' because that would leave you in the same pile of shysters that you were attempting to criticise.

Same sex marriage
Achieved Brexit
Trade deals achieved post-Brexit
One of the fastest Covid 19 vaccine roll outs, achieved outside of the EU
The transformative educational reforms under Michael Gove
Levelling up - all the funding that has been directed to the regions as a result of this, the left behind areas
City mayors

I could go on but it'll feel like a Life of Brian sketch. What have the Tories ever done for us? But i'm not saying there weren't missteps. The Truss budget is still in the minds of voters as it's hit them in the wallet.

Downsides:
Brexit
Awful post-Brexit deals
Vaccine rollout that was over taken by the slower rollouts within a couple of months
Educational reforms under Gove
Poor getting poorer and millions relying on foodbanks
Austerity
Not building enough homes
Propping up the already WAY overpriced housing market
Lack of rent reforms
Raising the age (the lowering again) the minimum wage age
Voting against a bill to make rental houses fit for human habitation
Freezing housing benefit while rents sky rocketed
PIP assessments
Universal Credit sanctions
Doubling the time until you had job security
NHS waiting lists
Windrush
Go home vans
Leaving single market and customs union
Refusing to invest in Port of Dover upgrades....

OP
"They're the world's most successful political party. Labour haven't even had that many years in power. The Liberal Party achieved more and Labour's rise coincided with their decline.

People can sing it all they like, but it shows a lack of respect for what they've achieved over the centuries"

Labour managed to slash the NHS waiting lists when they were last in despite not that many years in power. Shame it grew exponentially again when the Tories rose to power.

Lack of respect! Bloody hell - I have no words!

Absolutely with you on everything but the waiting lists. I worked in nhs since 2002, and what Blair actually did was 'massage the waiting lists', we got given directives to give a person on wait list a 5 min phone call, that counted as an 'assessment' and they came off the wait lists. The fact that they then didn't get seen for over a year fir a proper assessment went completely under the radar.
That's not to say that the current government haven't made an complete mess of the nhs - they absolutely have, but the waiting list data under the last Labour government is not to be believed

Also, I don't actually see how Labour (or anyone) will improve it, its so messy and complex and inefficient that it will take an absolute genius who is prepared to make some really tough decisions to make any real difference. NHS staff I know are not leaving due to pay, but due to feeling that they are absolutely banging their head against a wall of bureaucracy, red tape and rude patients, its just a complete mess. The concept of it as care free at point of delivery is sound, but the reality is a mess, which no amount of money throwing will fix

SloaneStreetVandal · 13/03/2024 19:24

I don't feel sorry for them. I feel a bit sorry for people who think labour won't, in all likelihood, be even worse! Brexit was a mistake, but then the electorate voted for it; thats democracy for you.

Are ya mad?

They don’t care about us.

Raspberrymoon49 · 13/03/2024 19:33

They’re the most corrupt, self-serving, lying, out of touch and ignorant government in living memory, I would celebrate if they disappeared completely

You're easily amused. The goverment you elect is the government you deserve. England gave the tories a majority in 2019 - the highest majority since 1979, no less.

No need to watch comedy, with this government if you find amusement in watching lemmings endlessly walking towards the sign saying danger cliff.

And look what they did with it...

I wouldn't piss on those bastards if they were on fire.

pointythings · 13/03/2024 19:48

They, in the main, did what they were asked; you have to concede that the OP has something of a point there. With covid, Bojo's plan was to keep the economy open with robust public health messaging (but not in law). The country en masse though demanded restrictions in law, furlough and the economy closed - and he buckled. Add in a Russian invasion and brexit (brexit which, again, the country voted in favour of) and you have a perfect storm.
Partygate was the beginning of the end for the tories - I thought it was fitting for Bojo to fall on his sword (ie for breaking rules he shouldn't have made in the first place).
Politics is in turmoil the world over, it will be for another few years. I don't think theres any point getting angry about it.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 13/03/2024 20:10

"Really unfortunate circumstances!! "🤣🤣

Nice try, OP.

They created most of the circumstances which have brought them low.

SomersetTart · 13/03/2024 20:11

"you have to concede that the OP has something of a point there."

Which point is that, the point where she said,
"I can't stand what is happening. The Tories, the super rich and the billionaire press barons have corrupted everything and destroyed the country"

Yes, I concede that she has a point there.

Combattingthemoaners · 13/03/2024 20:13

Not one ounce of my body feels sorry for them. Disaster after disaster, lie after lie. All they care about is their own political careers and not one jot about our country. They have destroyed our public services and have created a more divided and unequal country not seen since the 1970s.

Sunak is embarrassingly clinging onto power and now spouts rhetoric of our democracy being challenged from within. He’s an utterly pathetic little weasel.

I hope they get more than a bloody nose in the General Election.
