I think it may have been deleted now, but not before Center Parcs hid or deleted comments pointing out the stereotyping and misogyny of this Facebook post...
One comment I saw said mum's not keeping up because of all the shopping, cooking, washing and organising she had to before the family got to sodding Center Parcs in the first place. And she's riding a shite bike they've given her

Hmmm, I'm guessing none of you who think it's okay have had experience of trying to build the confidence of women and girls who would like to be more active?

Many are easily deterred and this kind of stereotyping really doesn't make things better.

And making women the butt of jokes doesn't strike me as great marketing.

Really? That's all it takes to destroy your confidence as a woman trying to be active?

Are people just offended at EVERYTHING these days?

Nope. Only when there is blatant sexism.

SweetcornFritter · 12/03/2024 21:05

I’m appalled by how white, middle class and heteronormative it is.

Londonrach1 · 12/03/2024 21:05

I think I missed what's wrong with it.

Isitautumnyet23 · 12/03/2024 21:07

Totally ridiculous thread 🙄

I can’t see a single thing wrong with it - thats from a fit, active Mum that would no doubt still have the kids shout ‘keep up Mum’ at me.

Have your kids never run/biked/scootered ahead and shouted that to you???

Rockschooldropout · 12/03/2024 21:07

I can’t be arsed to be offended by it .. also it’s not accurate because I wouldn’t even be in that pic but back at the lodge with my feet up .. and a large slice of cake

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 12/03/2024 21:14

My assumption is not that the mum is automatically slower

It's that the two GIRLS are excited and having a great time and zooming off ahead then calling back to their mum to keep up because she's not going as fast as their excitement wants them to

Bobskeleton · 12/03/2024 21:28

Maybe the mum chooses to lag behind for some peace and quiet, away from the squabbling kids?

IntermittentFarting · 12/03/2024 21:31

I actually think that the fuss about this ad and other such puffed up protestations are pretty damaging to the feminist cause.
How can complaints where genuinely damaging sexism and misogyny arise be taken seriously if people are constantly complaining about little inoffensive things that they've twisted to have a moan about?

HMW1906 · 12/03/2024 21:35

I see a family riding bikes together, I don’t really see what the issue is.

lemonmeringueno3 · 12/03/2024 21:38

I can't see an issue either. It's a family on a bike ride. One of the children is telling mum to 'keep up.' Should they be saying it to their dad, is that the problem?

I really don't think one mother being told to keep up = all women are shit, knackered, busy, inactive etc.

I think the offended response is weird tbh. Surely that's what young women and girls will pick up on? That they're supposed to be victims all the time, perpetually guarded and offended.

seven201 · 12/03/2024 21:41

I saw it and first thought was I'd have preferred it if it was a 'keep up dad' instead. But actually I am shit at cycling and was always last when cycling around CP, so it's my family. I am sweatier when trying to keep up.

They seem to be. Honestly, OP, what a fuss about nothing.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 really

GreenAppleCrumble · 12/03/2024 22:09

Of course it’s sexist. It says “That ‘keep up mum’ moment” as if it’s a thing; the implication is that it’s generally all mums who experience this. This is called representation. Mums are being represented as the slow, boring ones.

No, it wouldn’t be the same if it were the dad; that’s not how sexism works.

GreenAppleCrumble · 12/03/2024 22:10

To those who say smugly ‘I couldn’t get worked up about this,’ I say - I’m not worked up. I can just read a bit of subtext.

Wetblanket78 · 12/03/2024 22:15

And? They were probably just joking. Single mothers and fathers have no choice but to do it all at home and on holiday.

Hmm. I think this needs some serious deconstruction in the Senior Common Room.

The other side of the argument could be - just could be - that it’s a trivial and happy ad of no consequence and that “representation“ is a fancy way of saying not very much.

Three of the humans in this photo are female humans. How would that deter girls from being active? Surely it helps to encourage them?

What on earth are you getting so twisted up about and what’s your secret to having so much spare time on your hands?

Switcher · 12/03/2024 22:18

Kind of sums up centerparcs. Naff, low brow, eye wateringly expensive and mediocre. There are more exciting adventures to be had.

No, they just use "THAT" and "MOMENT" at the beginning and end of whatever the line is in the current run of ads. Another one is THAT one two three splash MOMENT.

Mums are being portrayed as slow and boring? Could it not just be that they are portraying some little girls as excited and active? Where's the sexism in that?

LancashireTart · 12/03/2024 22:24

Effing hell fire. Do you wake up every morning looking forward to finding things to be offended about, OP? 🙄

ChampagneLassie · 12/03/2024 22:29

MushMonster · 12/03/2024 16:58

The father is behind too, so I am taking it as a proud moment when the girls (particularly the little one, who is the one looking back and saying something in the pic) have mastered cycling well enough to tell mum (and dad) to keep up, in a jokey way. I think it was meant as a mum pride moment? It could read "keep up, both of you" and it would be clearer.
I get what you say and I woul agree with you if he was looking back too or clearly ahead of their mother.

I think this is probably what the ad people were aiming for. Until you said it I thought “weird ad” but I couldn’t get offended by this, it could just as easily say Dad. I literally think you’re having to make a big leap to construe this as offensive.

There isn't an issue. But evidently some people are wired to see things that simply don't exist in their desperation to find something offensive. It's pathetic.
