I don't meal like bugs, heights, death ... I mean something strange.. unconventional.. something that might need a bit of explanation.

I'll go first -

Water towers ... the thought of them makes me shudder.

Morph. Ever since I was a small child. I'd hide behind the sofa when he came on tv. I was terrified of him. I still feel very uneasy when I see him.
Later on, the butter figures (man made of butter playing trumpet?) in a Lurpak ad seemed just as scary. Perhaps it was the shapeshifting element that freaked me out?

Large metal objects in water - like oil rigs or submarines - oh they makes me feel really odd - started with the huge chains at the pier head when I was a child - just eughhh

I know exactly what you mean. Like ship propellers underwater, and stuff like that 😱

Deadringer · 11/03/2024 00:04

The ceiling falling down on me, or if I am upstairs, the floor collapsing under me, but mostly the ceiling. Most of the time I can put it out of my mind, but some nights I lie awake looking at the ceiling thinking it's coming down. Bizzare. I am often nervous on balconies and bridges too. Weird.

@DistressedDamson Omg. I've never met anyone else with the same phobia.
Not sure if you are the same but I'm really bad with black toilet seats. I cannot use a toilet with a black seat. Even the thought of using a toilet with a black seat frightens me.

This is really interesting. My 22 year old daughter has autism and this is her top fear!

Multistorey carparks , I break out in a sweat and start shaking

They're just wrong on so many levels.

MrsAvocet · 11/03/2024 00:13

Salad cream, mayonnaise or any other hideous slimey concoction. I have to look away if anyone is eating anything like that around me as it makes me feel physically sick.
Also Liverpool. It has a very unpleasant, almost evil atmosphere and the River Mersey is downright malevolent. I don't get the same feeling about another other river or city.

Thehaberdasher · 11/03/2024 00:13

Stairs with ‘open’ steps. Where someone underneath could grab your feet.

Chalk. God I hate it.

Bigglesbob · 11/03/2024 00:21

Skin showing when it shouldn’t , like a teeshirt rising up and showing someone’s stomach . Makes me shudder.
Motorways freak me out too

RunningAwayToJoinTheCircus · 11/03/2024 00:26

There's a particular hairstyle, that tends to be on small children, and it terrifies me.
I cannot stay somewhere if someone with the style arrives. Can't watch a tv show or film if someone has it.
I have no idea why, but it just upsets me - I feel sick, hot, uncomfortable, and just want to get away out of sight of it.
(And no, I won't describe it - lots of children wear it and it would upset anyone whose child has it)

LightSpeeds · 11/03/2024 00:28

Saliva - once it's out of the mouth 🤢

Wind turbines.
Creepy bastards.

I've stood under a wind turbine and it was one of the most frightening experiences of my life!!

Alcyoneus · 11/03/2024 00:33

Not liking something is not a phobia. It’s a dislike. Just like feeling sad is not anxiety or depression. And disagreeing with someone does not make them a narcissist.

RosePombear · 11/03/2024 00:34

Trampolines/bouncy castles. I had a vision as a child of someone jumping on my foot and it exploding and ever since I can’t even look at them without panicking. It’s so silly because I know my foot wouldn’t explode but it was such a vivid vision.

JockTamsonsBairns · 11/03/2024 00:49

Sprouting potatoes.
When I used to live very rurally, I'd buy a sack of potatoes from a nearby farm and store them in the outhouse.
When the sack got low once, I reached my hand down the sack - and brought out a potato which felt like it was sprouting rats tails, or eels.
It was utterly horrific.
A sprouting potato would now cause me a terrifying panic.

I ended up leaving rural life. Not altogether because of that, but it was a contributory factor.

Long escalators in tube stations

Friggingell · 11/03/2024 01:06

Metal tape measures, moles and veins 🤮

Moier · 11/03/2024 01:13

Really hairy mens bodies( l like long hair on a man) but hairy chests and backs and balls makes me 🤢

brytersky · 11/03/2024 01:18

Mine's not a phobia, but I really struggle with telling strangers my full name as I feel that it gives them some sort of power over me and they might harm me. It's really weird and I can't explain the feeling. Dh then told me that some primitive cultures believed that if your enemy found out your real name they could harm you so they resorted to using nicknames instead, so perhaps it's a past memory passed down through genes or something.

TeaPleaseX · 11/03/2024 01:37

@JMSA I'm also Autistic never linked the two together!. It really terrifies me though, I imagine how some one must feel if a clown popped out on them. For me Opening a cubicle door and it just being a black toilet behind it makes me feel ill.
Even now typing this it's freaking me out as I can visualise it.

Onacuctustree · 11/03/2024 01:41

Earth worms.
I am absolutely fine with snakes.
But common every day earth worms...I just can't deal with them.

grinandslothit · 11/03/2024 01:45

Hair in drains
Touching raw meat

Mama2many73 · 11/03/2024 02:00

Going over bridges in a vehicle. As a passenger I had to lift my feet off the ground, I can drive over them as my feet can be up by the pedals

also the ocean. I love the beach. But deep ocean terrifies.me.

My weird one is the time 23:23. My stomach turns/shudders. 11:23 is just as bad. But any other time with 11 or 23 is totally fine

I love wind turbines (would probably a bit scared to stand right next to one!)

So pleased it's not just me! There's an old indoor swimming pool that has closed down in our town and I have to cross to the other side of the road to walk past it just in case I look in through the window by accident!

Me too! I’m scared to death of empty swimming pools. I thought it was only me!

Im also petrified of jelly - I can’t cope with the thought of it, I couldn’t even bring myself to pick up the blocks of it. If I see some I have to leave - as I physically feel sick, sweaty and panicky 🤢

Slugs.
Especially the big ones. I found one in my fridge once. That was a difficult day.

Oh god, I feel your pain 😭 I found a massive one in the oven once!! HOW?!!!
