To be shocked and embarrassed by my friends behaviour today

bagpuss90 · 09/03/2024 16:08

Bumped into a friend today at the local Tesco’s . She was in a check out queue , I stopped to chat . There was a woman with a screaming baby in a sling and a screaming toddler in a trolley . The poor woman looked totally stressed out , she started to put her shopping on the check out conveyer belt (I’m not sure she realised my friend was in the queue) my friend snapped at her , told her she’d jumped the queue. The woman asked if my friend minded if she went first as she’d got two screaming children. My friend told her no and added she might have considered it if she hadn’t pushed in front . She then told the woman’s screaming toddler to shut up ! I might add my friend doesn't have kids and it would seem not much empathy either .

Afraid this can happen where people don’t have kids - they’ve never had their tolerance levels stretched and have no experience to be empathetic.

God, I hate this place.

You mean you don't feel your tolerance levels stretching by the minute...

FloozyMcGee · 09/03/2024 23:03

When I see moms having a hard time with their kids I ask them if there's anything I can do to help. You could have set a good example for your friend. I would have said, "pardon my friend. How can I help you?" trying to entertain the little one probably would have helped. The poor mom!"

Classic rudeness on MN.

It’s not rude at all. What is rude is expecting special treatment just because you gave birth. Billions do annually.

saying my friend doesn’t have kids it was a silly thing to say but she doesn’t need to be called weak

Edited

Do you really expect anyone to legitimately dismiss this as naivety?

You might feel differently if you were in that situation!

That’s horrible. Poor mum , any decent person would have unloaded her trolley then packed her bloody shopping for her.

😆😆😆😆😆

I wouldn’t be in that situation.

Well obviously.

So you just stood there and said nothing, OP. I would have told my “friend” to let the woman with screaming kids go first and to not be so rude.

You think you can “tell” another adult how to behave?

HotChocolateNotCocoa · 09/03/2024 23:39

waterlellon · 09/03/2024 19:54

She yells at small children to shut up. That is a deeply dark soul

😆😆😆

So a random stranger telling an upset toddler to shut up is ok then?

I mean.... someone had to say it.

It was a bit rude to ask to go first after accidentally jumping the queue, but if someone told my child to shut up... I'm swinging. Cause who tf does she think she is lmao

It takes more care and skill NOT to become pregnant than to get pregnant for most young women.

If all parents were empathetic, there would be no need for Social Services where severely neglected children are a far too common occurrence.

I am a parent but stranger’s screaming children absolutely do my head in.

Well behaved children are a delight.

This friend is known for being outspoken and she has upset quite a few people over the years .

People who are outspoken are OK if it's a valid issue. Like being outspoken on violence to women and girls for example.

But if your "I say what I see" type sometimes that's code words for "I'm a rude arsehole" I know someone who proudly says "I say it as see it!" While getting tearful that people are turning on them for no reason.

It's true we can all be acasionally be arseholes. Depends on if its a lifestyle choice.

bagpuss90 · 10/03/2024 01:29

I’m actually amazed at the some of the comments on here…. Why are some people so nasty ?

I think I would erupt as a mum if some random women told my toddler to shut up.

Tbh she was embarrassing and rude at first but telling a toddler to shut up? I wouldn't be friends with this person. She sounds horrid.

HollyKnight · 10/03/2024 01:53

I'm trying to picture this. Was your friend just there with a basket/trolley full of food, making her way up the queue, without putting anything on the belt?

Scaffoldingisugly · 09/03/2024 16:12

Sometimes a stern word from someone else can work wonders on a toddler ime!!

Really???? No adult should tell a child to shut up!!!

kkloo · 10/03/2024 02:43

oakleaffy · 09/03/2024 21:08

It wasn’t said aggressively- just “ Oh DO shut up!”

The kid reined In it’s squalling .

It’s mother clearly couldn’t be bothered.

It's still a pretty shit thing to say, he knows nothing at all about that child. Maybe the child had a very good reason for 'squalling'.

Imagine the same happened to your dad if he was distressed over something.

That would have been an ex-friend of mine.

I’d be embarrassed too. Jesus 😮

Exactly! We wouldn't accept it for an adult
