To be shocked and embarrassed by my friends behaviour today

Bumped into a friend today at the local Tesco’s . She was in a check out queue , I stopped to chat . There was a woman with a screaming baby in a sling and a screaming toddler in a trolley . The poor woman looked totally stressed out , she started to put her shopping on the check out conveyer belt (I’m not sure she realised my friend was in the queue) my friend snapped at her , told her she’d jumped the queue. The woman asked if my friend minded if she went first as she’d got two screaming children. My friend told her no and added she might have considered it if she hadn’t pushed in front . She then told the woman’s screaming toddler to shut up ! I might add my friend doesn't have kids and it would seem not much empathy either .

Why is that funny?

If a random person came up to you and told you to shut up it wouldn't be on. It's worse when it's a kid as they can't speak up dor themselves.

Asiatoyork · 10/03/2024 06:53

I agree your friend ultimately behaved really badly.

added to which, this toddler was alone

This vile man knew that, hence telling the toddler to shut up. Not a chance this man would have told the toddler to shut up had the mother been right there.

Had my father done this, i think my jaw would have hit the floor, as would have been SO out of character for him. The OP with the father who told the toddler to shut up.. no used to this kind of thing from her father

Agreed. A defenseless child.

I’m actually amazed at the some of the comments on here…. Why are some people so nasty ?

Bitter and angry is my guess. Yet they continue to hang around on Mumsnet ready to pounce and argue back and forth on any comment that upsets their fragile souls.

Oh, and then call "bingo" when anyone points out the irony.

Greenpolkadot · 10/03/2024 07:03

Are you still friends with woman OP ?

Really???? No adult should tell a child to shut up!!!

If only the parents would ...

sandgrown · 10/03/2024 07:09

I was in a queue behind a lady with a baby and a toddler in full on tantrum mode .She was close to tears. The elderly gent in front of me jumped in and loaded the belt and helped her pack while offering words of encouragement. I don’t suppose he had had children for many years but he knew how to help.

Or maybe he didn't have children but, as a human being, still had empathy and knew how to help

puzzledout · 10/03/2024 07:52

@HotChocolateNotCocoa out of interest, do you have children? If so, what ages?

Far too many bratty kids about that aren’t disciplined- just look at the AIBU - people ( parents) sick to death of other people’s badly behaved disruptive kid/s

Your kids may be charming to YOU, but no one else is impressed by their screaming or bad behaviours.

And we know whose badly behaved hellions are annoying everyone else , and ruining other’s peace and quiet by being a pain in the backside.

all grown up thankfully. Shortly heading off to brunch with both my lovely girls now. But i’ll be sure to tell them to shut up if the need arises! 😆

Glad to hear it!
My now adult son is also popping over at midday- we won't be going to a restaurant though, as it will be screechy.
Country walk instead.

Not relevant.

Funny how people are more worried about someone telling a toddler who was alone to shut up than they are about the toddler actually being alone.

I was worried about that. Which is why I said worse could have happened. But that's not reason go round telling kids to shut up

calm down. i got the impression out of ear shot as the lovely pp ( 🤔) said the mother “didn’t give a shit”

I didn't say they were charming did I. Wtf. I said that child was on their own. So probably a bit like where's mum. And instead of someone going hey that person looks upset they've gone to an upset person and told them to shut up.

It's no wonder some men think it's ok to just tell women to shut up

still het up from the royal Kate thread i suspect!

puzzledout · 10/03/2024 11:14

@HotChocolateNotCocoa I think knit is relevant actually 🤷‍♀️.

You sound deeply unpleasant either way, but it would tell why if you either have or don't have children.

I guess the bingo is pointed at me, as one of the people who said it. Yep bitter and angry on my way to mothers day with my lovely nephew who I am bringing up

Amazing how those who defend childless people must be bitter and angry not empathetic to those in that situation...
