To be shocked and embarrassed by my friends behaviour today

Bumped into a friend today at the local Tesco’s . She was in a check out queue , I stopped to chat . There was a woman with a screaming baby in a sling and a screaming toddler in a trolley . The poor woman looked totally stressed out , she started to put her shopping on the check out conveyer belt (I’m not sure she realised my friend was in the queue) my friend snapped at her , told her she’d jumped the queue. The woman asked if my friend minded if she went first as she’d got two screaming children. My friend told her no and added she might have considered it if she hadn’t pushed in front . She then told the woman’s screaming toddler to shut up ! I might add my friend doesn't have kids and it would seem not much empathy either .

Why do you keep bumping up the thread?!

LoudSnoringDog · 09/03/2024 16:39

I would have pulled my “friend” up on the spot

DrJoanAllenby · 09/03/2024 16:41

I've had children and managed to go shopping without asking anyone for preferential treatment so I do think it's perfectly ok for your friend to refuse her request to jump the queue.

However, the manner in which she spoke to the woman and her toddler doesn't sound very gracious so only you can decide whether you should have said anything at the time or not.

To be honest, whilst I would have let her go first, I wouldn’t really appreciate somebody assuming they can push in front of me just because they have children. But telling a toddler to shut up is of course not on.

This.

The woman could have stopped and tried to calm down her children before approaching the till queue. Also having children is not an excuse for not seeing someone queuing.

No idea about her situation of course, but it's not ideal to bring 2 young children to a supermarket if it can be helped.

I can understand why your friend was fed up, (but can't excuse her for the comment to thr toddler.)

Hagbard · 09/03/2024 16:59

It was rude of the woman pushing in not to ask if she could. But also rude to tell the toddler to shut up.

I often get men pushing in front of me - once it happened with a man carrying a white stick. I politely told him there was a queue, and he threw his avocados on the floor and flounced out. Perhaps that makes me a bit of a cunt?

Nicetobenice67 · 09/03/2024 17:02

Sounds classy…NOT I too would be embarrassed but I would have called her out at the time and fucked her off as a friend how dare she tell the child to shut up …I would definitely have said something if I would have heard her

Is this the same Tesco that had the 3 children making a den out of the Weetabix boxes on Aisle 5 earlier today?

Sometimes a stern word from someone else can work wonders on a toddler ime!!

Try giving my toddler a stern word when she’s upset. See how well that ends for you. Firstly, it would make it so much worse and upset her more. Secondly, I’d promptly tell you where you can shove your judgement.

Xenoi24 · 09/03/2024 17:07

Some people here are right cunts.

I let people with eg far fewer items than me go first at supermarkets regularly, without two kids in the picture . ... I'd have let her go first without a second thought.

Putting the self righteous cuntery about that aside, your "friend" is also just a rude, out of order, inappropriate bitch.

You said she had previous incidents ... unsurprising.

Why is she still your friend.

She's awful.

This friend is known for being outspoken and she has upset quite a few people over the years .

Why are you friends with her? She sounds awful. I’d have had to tell her that too.

hopscotcher · 09/03/2024 17:09

Oooh well she doesn't have children, so what can you expect?

cliffdiver · 09/03/2024 17:09

Personally, I’m more shocked and embarrassed when people say Tesco’s instead of Tesco.

Seriously, if you're not willing to say to her, "hey! That's enough, there's no need for that" to your "friend" then you need to ditch her.

I have no problem telling friends when they're out of line and it doesn't have to be dramatic, just firm

Shocked and embarrassed? You may need to get out more

EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel · 09/03/2024 17:15

Leave the ‘doesn’t have kids’ bit out of it. I’m childfree by choice & I’d have offered to let her go first, partly out of sympathy & partly out of gratitude that it wasn’t me in that situation.

Agreed. I’ll buy you a book on understanding sarcasm when I’m out Wink

To Sainsbury's , obviously.

waterlellon · 09/03/2024 17:18

I can cope with all of it, it's a bit mean but fine, but TELLING A TODDLER to SHUT UP? that's cruel and she must have a dark soul.

coldcallerbaiter · 09/03/2024 17:19

Reasonable not to let someone jump the queue

Bur to tell the toddler to shut up!
Who does she think she is? No, she is an idiot for that.
