Mothers Day should be banned

Thread after thread on here with Mothers Day drama and grief

Partners who haven't made any plans
Partners whose plans aren't WOW enough
Mothers v MILs
Mothers v Mothers and MILS
Partner isn't making plans for mother of unborn baby
Blended family dramas
The list goes on and on

Post Mothers Day will have the threads

He forgot
It was rubbish compared to the elaborate day he got for Fathers Day
MIL spoiled it
Etc

Its not worth it. It seems to be make so many people unhappy and angry and we'd be better off without.

YABU: its a cherished and important day, how dare you even ask
YANBU: ban it and save us all from the grief and drama

Full disclosure: I celebrate it to the extent that my kids will serve me tea and (burnt) toast in bed. Otherwise its a normal day. And of course I know it won't actually be banned. Its just a discussion.

My mother kicks off on the run up to mothers day...every fuckin year without fail. She's 80 in October and I'm an only child. She's just slammed the phone down on me tonight, so this is her just starting the drama.

She chose a rotten man to be my father and I've had a lifetime of reminders of what a mistake SHE made. Sick to the fuckin back teeth of it.

Mothers day IS NOT a Christian holiday. Pancake Day IS NOT a Christian holiday. Some people either need to learn some history or go to church.

Needmorelego · 08/03/2024 18:21

@Whyarepeoplesoweird pancake day and mother's day are part of Lent.
Lent is Christian.
Not a "holiday" as such but part of tradition.

Or some people celebrate them and are not Christian.

TeabySea · 08/03/2024 18:22

I don't think we should ban it, but equally I don't think it should be a day that there's a load of fuss about - and ditto Father's day.

Mother's day was originally a religious holiday and it's been piggybacked to become a commercial venture.

If I get a cup of tea in bed and a biscuit, that'll do me.

I think technically Shrove Tuesday is part of of Ordinary Time but yes, obviously part of the liturgical year.

pancake day is another day I would like banned

I eat pancakes all the time. making one day pancake day just puts too much pressure on the pancakes being perfect that day

Don't do it then. For some people it's an important point in their religious year.

Well done to the few retailers that sent emails about would people like to opt out of MD related emails. I opted out as I didn’t want my inbox filled with crap.

Not everyone wants to celebrate MD - no mother either dead or relationship is strained/non existent

VampireWeekday · 08/03/2024 18:30

I love mother's day. My four year old came bouncing out of nursery telling me I'd get to sleep all morning on my "special day". Excited to see how long "all morning" is to a four year old! He had made me a card at nursery (which he's already given me) and has promised me a special kiss. What could be better than that? We're also going to the pub for Sunday roast (I booked and I will pay. It's not DP's job, I'm not his mum).

Needmorelego · 08/03/2024 18:30

@Oneofthesurvivors and people need to remember that traditions evolve over time so while some have links with certain religious events - they aren't based on a bible quote or something.
That's what is nice about life sometimes - events and celebrations evolving over time.

Shrove Tuesday is though.

I didn't say anything about them being based on bible quotes. My point was they are important to some people and no one else is forced to do them.

Zoreos · 08/03/2024 18:35

I think if we just banned people being entitled cheeky fuckers then it would solve a whole host of issues including MD. Alas, it’ll never work out that way sadly.

Mine came home with a card, showed it to me and then hid it so I would have a surprise on Sunday!

I feel there is a difference between Christians celebrating shrove Tuesday and the commercialised pancake day that EVERYONE celebrates regardless of faith background. the first is a spiritual exercise and the second a purely commercial one.
I have a problem with the second. partly because I think it's quite disrespectful to turn a religious practice into an exercise of gluttony

you don't have to agree with my opinions. feel free to read and move on

Needmorelego · 08/03/2024 18:37

@Oneofthesurvivors I wasn't having a go at you 🙂
I was agreeing with you.
I like the way Shrove Tuesday has different traditions in different countries (ie it's Mardi Gras in some countries).
Different traditions that all have evolved from the same event - the beginning of Lent.

ChihuahuasREvil · 08/03/2024 18:40

It’s perfunctory chocolates and card, I don’t see the big fuss. Anybody who expects a song and dance is just a drama queen.

Shrove tuesday pretty much was traditionally an exercise in gluttony though. It was a feast day to eat all the rich food you had in the house before you had to fast during lent.

cuckyplunt · 08/03/2024 18:41

I’ve had two rats for Mother’s Day, very happy!

WhenIsTheGeneralElection · 08/03/2024 18:45

I just buy a card and it is fine. I also buy a card for myself. I bought both valentintes cards too. It simplifies life a lot. #low-maintenance

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 08/03/2024 18:48

Well the issue is like everything else it has become commercialised. I mean do women really want any of this shirt that they bring out for Mother’s Day? Nah a nice card from the kids should suffice.

surreygirl1987 · 08/03/2024 18:48

I couldn't care less. My husband / kids probably won't get me anything but that's fine - they're awesome and I don't need a card or flowers for that to be the case!

Everythinggreen · 08/03/2024 18:49

You could apply that thinking to any other occasion though. It's people that cause drama not occasions. I vote we ban people!

Screamingabdabz · 08/03/2024 18:50

Whilst not part of Christian calendar in of itself, it is more a traditional celebration associated with the Christian church. (Going back to visit your ‘mother church’) - and it is celebrated by churches. (Go along, it’s usually a lovely service!)

So not just a Hallmark day.

And YES we are a Christian country by way of the Church of England being entwined with the state apparatus of monarchy and parliament.

I think people who have drama on Mother’s Day largely bring it on themselves - high expectations and poor choice of partners being two of the main issues. Why ruin it for those of us who manage it perfectly well and don’t have bat shittery going on in our lives?
