What's worse than postbox toppers? Seasonal postbox toppers when it isn't that season

Round here we are surrounded by Christmas postbox toppers.

It's March FFS.

Wondering if the topper crafters have downed tools having realised they could do something better with their time.

@Fourcupsandasaucer why not cut out the middletopper and get the crafters to make whimsical pet beds in the first place?

That would be a loss to all those in the community who really enjoy seeing the toppers.

SoupDragon · 09/03/2024 09:13

What's worse than postbox toppers?

Fun sponges. They're worse.

Trinity65 · 09/03/2024 09:13

There is a entire group on Facebook dedicated to them OP

😆

😂😂😂😂😂😂😄

Honestly OP go and remove it if it that offensive.

But really it isn't is it.

🤦‍♀️.

And good luck to all the knitters out there. Just think They could be sat doom scrolling on the Internet or something useful like that.

ChampagneLassie · 09/03/2024 09:21

I think you’ve got to be quite mean spirited to get annoyed about this. For me that would be a red flag as to someone’s character, a bit like when people say they don’t like animals or children.

Feeltoooldtostudybutdoingitanyway · 09/03/2024 09:25

So I really don't like them because I've always had a really weird sensory aversion to wet wool, to the point that I can't take certain clothes out the washing machine & seeing wet wool makes my teeth feel funny & I can even urge. But I recognise that, it's a totally me issue, that is bizarre & not something anyone else should be concerned with. So I see the toppers as a form of therapy!

I can see the skill that goes into the toppers. The tatty little bits on crossings & railings, I'm less keen on those. They always look grubby very quickly.

WetBandits · 09/03/2024 09:27

Aw OP, don’t be such a miseryguts!

I love seeing them pop up around our village. Smile

sunglassesonthetable · 09/03/2024 09:34

On reflection I'd love to sit in a Pub and knit n' natter with my pals. Shame I can't knit.

Put your money where your mouth is OP. Go and pull it off, Bung it in the wash, whack it on the radiator then stick it a carrier bag and leave the bag on top of the post box. Community service done. 👍🏻

merlotmerlin · 09/03/2024 09:36

Postman Pat's van should feature more.

IFollowRivers · 09/03/2024 09:36

I can totally accept that I am a huge misery disliking postbox toppers. If it helps I also dislike dogs intently, cats even more and eat children for breakfast.

However my issue was the unseasonal ones of which we are grifted so very many in my 'hood. It is if the crochetterati have downed sticks post Christmas.

How rude and miserable are you, OP?

@waterlellon They usually get changed regularly but apparently this particular maker has been laid up so couldn't get out to remove it herself since New Year. No explanation as to why any of the other makers couldn't have whipped it down for her before a regular passer-by presumably tired of seeing a soggy Grinch day after day and took matters into their own hands 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think we might live in the same town 🤣🤣

They got your vibe.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 09/03/2024 09:42

It’s the war ones which bother me. Men died in their millions and we “celebrate” that with whimsical little infantilisations of happy soldiers toddling off to be eviscerated in some freezing cold muddy field. Making them into something from fucking Trumpton really doesn’t feel like a respectful treatment of the subject.

I wonder if the knitter who made that @brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr has a connection with the forces?

With the Trumpton forces

Postbox toppers I can deal with; it's the scarf's on tree trunks that irritate me

Awww, I'd love to see that. 🌲

Fourcupsandasaucer · 09/03/2024 09:50

We have 'bollard toppers' around here.

The problem came when the tops of the bollards were all painted in 'gold' paint for the Royal Wedding.

Then along came some short-sighted Knitters & Natters who didn't see the "Wet Paint" signs and put the tops on the bollards. The toppers got stuck and then no-one could get them off for months...

IFollowRivers · 09/03/2024 08:55

The post boxes will get chilly

Problem here is by keeping them warm you are artificially supporting their ecosystem.

Let evolution do its thing and they'll sprout wooly hair of their own accord in a generation or two.

Very good point

Evenstar · 09/03/2024 09:59

@IFollowRivers maybe this lovely Easter one I saw on Facebook will cheer you up

I lived in a village where they did yarn bombing, it always looked crap. Trees, railings, lampposts. There was even a little tykes car and old bike wrapped in yarn randomly abandoned in the village.

Thank you.

Today is likely to be a challenging day but every time I think that things are bad I will think of this and know that they could be so much worse.

Someone does it where I live. It's a new one every so often. We currently have the Easter one, before that was a valentine one. I honestly love them. Whenever a new one goes up, it brings me so much joy to see it when everything else is so depressing. I hope whoever does them carries on.

I like them too. They’re a big thing in a town we regularly visit and they always make me smile. They do seem to be changed regularly there. The coronation ones were beautiful.
