What's worse than postbox toppers? Seasonal postbox toppers when it isn't that season

Round here we are surrounded by Christmas postbox toppers.

It's March FFS.

Wondering if the topper crafters have downed tools having realised they could do something better with their time.

Lynched by who?

Perhaps there does need to be some sort of royal mail schedule. Eg. A date every 6 months where the postboxes have their hats removed and a good maintenance check. I doubt they will make that a thing though as it costs money

She will get lynched by 100s of little knitted figures brandishing crocheted flaming torches.

waterlellon · 09/03/2024 08:36

Do they get reused? It is a LOT of effort for just a few months. Seems a shame if they just get thrown out

Yes! That's a good idea for the next ones! Maybe the whole country could coordinate

@DillDanding

Nothing wrong with knit and natter groups, gives something to do for many lonely older people (yes we have a man at the one we host) and far more wholesome than propping up the bar in Wetherspoons which is one of the only other places people go around here

I always think the idea of the 'knit & matter' groups are great.
Social interaction, using their brains to do quite complex work, everything we are told is necessary for a healthy lifestyle of all ages.

They can be donated to the local pet rescue. They can be washed and dried and used as pet bedding.

ZenNudist · 09/03/2024 08:40

I like them. They invariably stay on ages but are a cheerful thing to see and I admire the craftsmanship.

Yes my grandma loved hers and carried on going even when the arthritis prevented the knitting. She used to help with the wool. It's a great and mostly accessibility hobby for those who find eg walking groups difficult

@Fourcupsandasaucer why not cut out the middletopper and get the crafters to make whimsical pet beds in the first place?

I wish I could knit. I can manage a square but those 3d toppers are amazing

The post boxes will get chilly

I love them.

They cheer the streets up.
They provide a good trail around the town for little kids to find them all.
They raise money for charity.
They bring people together in knit and natter groups to decide on themes and patterns.

What's not to love?

Well a few fun sponges here don’t like them! I love them, if they raise money, if people enjoy knitting, people like seeing them and post office/royal mail approve then do it. If I knitted I’d do it.

Great idea. I'll get the local Pet Rescue to approach the Knit and Natter groups.

They could make pet bedding using leftover wool.

We have a few of these locally including a crochet group in one of the pubs.

Sybila · 09/03/2024 08:48

I’d love to live in a place where these wouldn’t be stolen or ruined. They’re lovely

ILikeItWhatIsIt · 08/03/2024 21:41

Someone does it where I live. It's a new one every so often. We currently have the Easter one, before that was a valentine one. I honestly love them. Whenever a new one goes up, it brings me so much joy to see it when everything else is so depressing. I hope whoever does them carries on.

I feel the same!

They are lovely & I truly feel for anyone who can feel miserable about them! Ours is covered (it's outside a busy shop) & is regularly changed.

So cute.

Problem here is by keeping them warm you are artificially supporting their ecosystem.

Let evolution do its thing and they'll sprout wooly hair of their own accord in a generation or two.

I’m a cynical grumpy bastard, yet I quite like them. Brightens the place up a bit.

I don’t mind them at all. The Charles coronation one below is genius (not my photo). Someone must have take ages to do the local harbour but it’s been taken down now.

I wish we had those where I live.
Im also jealous of South Yorkshire folk, who’s council has planted thousands of flower seeds along grass verges and on patches of grass alongside roads. Looks beautiful.

Learn to knit and start them.

Sadly i Think the local woman to us, her DJ is very ill so I don’t think she has time to do it and isn’t in a knitting group..

IFollowRivers · 09/03/2024 09:05

Do your local crocheting collective employ a DJ to keep the looping in time or just to being a bit of dance trance into the mix?

EsmaCannonball · 09/03/2024 09:07

It's not something I would do, but I like them. I've lived in areas where anything like this would be immediately stolen or vandalised and I've noticed that places that have postbox toppers or knitting on benches, railings, lampposts, and so on, usually have a good sense of community.
