Hi Guys just received this from
my neighbours. We’ve gotten a new pup but there is minimal if no smell at all. She poops beside the bins so if anything they’d be smell from the bins. The gate must have only opened as it wasn’t banging previous to this message. It’s not easy to look into our garden through the fences either so it’s clear they are going out of their way. Could I get some help responding to the second text. Thanks!

Just say, for the sake of it, that the poo doesn't smell. What motive does your neighbour have for snooping in your garden and making complaints? The messages don't sound particularly deranged or aggressive.

Flooom · 06/03/2024 17:16

Maybe they know it's there because they can smell it? The obvious thing would be to apologise and explain you have been unwell so haven't cleaned up as much as normal

When I was ill my DSis came round to clear my cats' litter tray. Maybe you could make an arrangement with someone to help you in these sort of circumstances (and of course you reciprocate) so that your neighbours don't have to endure dog poo left lying around outside? Then pick up promptly every single time otherwise, it's disgusting leaving poo on the ground.

And my NDN's gate is often banging in the wind, it's not a minor niggle when it's windy I can tell you, it's really massively annoying. I don't have contact details for this neighbour so I couldn't ask them if they could please bolt their gate and had to put up with it for the duration of the windy spell.

Your neighbours sound lovely, you don't sound that considerate of other people at this point.

In South of France the English neighbours left their bedroom shutters unsecured when they returned to UK, and in the Mistral they banged incessantly. Impossible to think or sleep.

It was so irritating - I had to get the 'Guardian' to come and deal with it with a ladder.

The neighbours in OP's post sound decent neighbours.

cinders222 · 06/03/2024 17:18

You are 100% unreasonable. I have a dog and no matter how unwell / tired I am dog poop gets picked up straight away.

Cheesyfootballs01 · 06/03/2024 17:18

OP - all shit stinks ( including yours!)

Pick up your dogs shit straight away and don’t leave it hanging around.

Put a lock on your gate

Strawberrybuttercream · 06/03/2024 17:18

I’d send a pic of the shared fence from your side showing that there’s no poo and write something like,

”hi Neighbour, thank you for your message. There isn’t any dog poo alongside our shared fence, so I’m not sure what you’re smelling or where it’s coming from. Possibly your bin? I hope you find the source of your smell! Regards.”

That's plain daft being as the neighbours have seen and smelled dog shit in OP's yard.

No one would complain about dog shit for no reason.

Moveoverdarlin · 06/03/2024 17:21

Hi Jane, thanks for the heads up, all the poo has been cleared up and the gate is firmly shut. Sorry about that. Hope all is well. Emma x

(puppy poo can stink, I have a very big garden and at about 11pm I send our six month old Labrador out to do a wee and poo. I stay by the door and watch her run to the end of the garden (maybe 80 foot away) depending on the direction of the wind I can really smell it from all that way away. For something fairly small and cute, the smell of her poo really carries.)

longtompot · 06/03/2024 17:22

The first message read to me as your neighbour giving you a heads up that there was loads of dog poo along the fence line. I'm unclear if this is in or outside of the garden, but if outside it read as if it could have been other dogs doing it.
However, if it's your dogs poo and it's either there bagged or unbagged, your neighbour is being really friendly about it. Puppy poo really does smell and you may be a bit nose blind with regards to your dog and it's smells.
Anyway, I think you have a friendly neighbour and they can be quite rare.

Clean up the poo ASAP and problem solved!

This. Disgusting why would you leave it

L0bstersLass · 06/03/2024 17:23

Stop making excuses.
Get out there and clean the shit up. Dreadful behaviour from you.
You need to pick up every time, not once every few days. How revolting.

But there is, op says she hasn't cleared up since Monday. 🤮

Perfect response here.

All poop smells bad. Puppy or otherwise. I have a dog and even when she was a dinky little pup her poop stank.

Greenflamesburn · 06/03/2024 17:25

@Gab3105
So you want us to rally about the noisy neighbour looking in to your garden. how dare they find where the vile smell is coming from.

No OP shit is shit and, shit stinks. Depending on the puppy you have they could be some very large shits soon enough. Your neighbour is trying to train you to pick up the shit good on them so they don't have to spend the summer unable to use the garden due to the cesspit next door.

Text was nice polite I'd apologise and pick up the shit.
Just out of curiosity did you ever have a DV bug when the children were small? I assume you still changed there nappies and saw to there needs. Why should your puppy be any different? It still has needs just because you are ill doesn't mean they stop.
Clean the shit up daily or do the right thing and get rid of the dog.

And buy a bolt for the gate so the puppy can't escape.

ChangeAgain2 · 06/03/2024 17:27

@Gab3105 you seem to think it's not a problem but it's clearly a problem for them. Maybe your nose blind because you live with the dog.

You can't leave your dog poo laying around. It's gross. While I'm sorry you had a vomiting bug. That's really not their problem.

You are more concerned about how they can see the shit rather than inconveniencing the with the smell of shit.

You need to apologise and do better in the future.

Panama2 · 06/03/2024 17:27

I used to live next door to a couple who had an outside run and kennel. If they didn't wash down the run it stunk to high heaven I love dogs but don't tell me your dog's shit don't stink it does.

Gab3105 · 06/03/2024 16:58

Just an update for the people that weren’t too helpful.

we pick up the poo regularly but have had a vomiting bug for two days. It’s puppy poo which you cannot smell outside and especially in the colder weather. The garden was last cleaned on Monday so there’s hardly any poo out there. My issue is that you really need to try to even see into our garden. We do not share a garden at all. There are two fences between us!!

Pet owners are nose-blind. poo smells even puppy poo! It can also attract rats etc as food tends to be rich and does not get fully digested.

WonderingWanda · 06/03/2024 17:28

In light of your update why have you not just replied and said 'Sorry, we've been ill, thanks letting me know about the gate'.

Stoodley · 06/03/2024 17:30

YOU might not be able to smell the poo but it’s obvious your neighbour can. Don’t be a knob OP. Pick up the poo every time your puppy poos.

6pence · 06/03/2024 17:31

The texts talk about a shared fence. You later say there is no shared fence and it’s two fences apart. What is it?

EnjoyingTheSilence · 06/03/2024 17:32

I’m sorry @Gab3105 but all shit smells. It’s like when dog owners say their dog doesn’t smell. It does, they have just got used to it so don’t smell it anymore.

And I love dogs, would dearly love to have one but not able to as out of the house all day.

The tone of your neighbours note is very friendly so I would apologise and say you’ll make sure you’re on top of it going forwards.

They can probably smell it, they don't need to see it

And, there is nothing more annoying than a gate constantly banging in the wind. Sorry OP but you seem to be the nightmare neighbour here and your neighbours seem v polite under the circumstances

"so there's hardly any poo out there" So there is poo there.

Sunnydays0101 · 06/03/2024 17:34

Of course they smelled it and had a look to see where it originated from. Clean up your dogs poo at least once a day and maybe encourage him to poo elsewhere.

LITLINAWIS · 06/03/2024 17:39

I think they sound really polite messages.
I would just apologise and clear it up. If you leave it piled up it will attract flies and rats anyway, so it’s good for your own health to keep the garden free of poop too.
The gate has probably added to their irritation. If you don’t want it to escalate, just sort it.
