I think people would be happy to pay more tax if it was guaranteed to go to the NHS.

No, just watching a news report on the nhs workers suing government whilst being off sick with long covid.. we are talking years not months. It's a fucking shambles!! What about everyone else cracking on .. no sick pay or reduced hours.

But we are more taxed than we have ever been and there comes a point where the tax burden acts as a drag on the economy, so it’s becomes a law of diminishing returns. Just look at Birmingham city council !.

We are not more taxed that we have ever been. When I started work the tax rate was 33%

maddening · 06/03/2024 07:31

Fix the waste first - the beaurocratic red tape snx procurement - even for facilities- they can spend 5 times the actual cost of minor facilities tasks the way they currently do.it - there are people and companies taking money hand over fist this way.

@Spywoman excellent post and spot on

These countries spend far more per capita on health than we do, as CV costs work through the system, the UKs health budget is actually falling.

The UK has for decades, not spent enough on Health, we vote for Tax cuts instead.

European countries have far more nurses, equipment, Doctors and beds per person than the UK does.

Where are the people going to come from to be medics etc? people wanting to become AHPs is less than the numbers leaving the NHS.

Its only going to get worse.

Agree totally. These systems don’t come cheaply so it is still going to take investment.

I do think there are many decisions to be made about how resources are used and what we find but I don’t think the general public are the ones to make these decisions. Individuals make decisions on their own situations not looking at the overall picture. That’s why we need decent politicians.

brunettemic · 06/03/2024 07:33

Absolutely not, I’ve worked with the NHS and they waste money like it’s going out of fashion. Pouring more money in won’t resolve the issues. It’s broken on so many levels and needs changing from top to bottom.

Income tax isn't the only tax. Most others have gone up!

stealthbanana · 06/03/2024 07:34

I would not be happy to pay more tax. I would however be happy to pay or part pay for some of the services I use on the nhs.

free at the point of the delivery is no longer a practical model and should be scrapped.

No. I’m ex NHS and wouldn’t have stayed for more money. It’s terms and conditions that need to change to fill vacancies. The budget for staff exists already but staff are leaving. Extra cash would go to middle management projects and little would improve. Plus i really don’t have cash to spare for extra tax

Boomer55 · 06/03/2024 07:37

The NHS needs reform, not endless money thrown at it.

EasternStandard · 06/03/2024 07:37

Social care is a factor and population health. I wonder if we’re more reliant on care homes than some other countries. I know we are overall unhealthier

Newbutoldfather · 06/03/2024 07:38

There are some easy fixes which are beyond most people’s comprehension.

Why do the NHS still communicate via mail. I mean it is spotty and some do actually use e mail and text, but many still don’t. You get an appointment in, say, 6 months, no reminders, and then people are surprised so many appointments are missed. Compare that with my (private) dentist, optician where everything is either text or e mail with a reminder the day before.

Why is it so hard to get (YOUR OWN) info from the NHS? They won’t send you raw info (scan and blood test reports etc) and just give you an appointment in the never never. It is very patriarchal, might have been good pre internet, but now, ridiculous! Again, you get private scans and blood tests, if not immediately, within a few days, and you can do what you want with them.

Communicating with patients in a timely and efficient manner and treating patients like adults would be win/win.

Augustus40 · 06/03/2024 07:39

A very small per cent of people end up in a care home.

Money needs to be invested in education plus the police force not just the Nhs!

dogwhistler · 06/03/2024 07:39

Id prefer a hybrid system like they have in most of the world.

Toooldforthis36 · 06/03/2024 07:39

I’d be interested to see how better faring healthcare systems prioritise preventative health care, and how social attitudes to looking after your own health differ. Strikes me many Scandi/Euro societies don’t feed themselves the junk food we do, and have a better wellness mentality. Not to mention a better work/life balance. They also pay heftily in tax, so there’s that. Not an easy fix, but we clearly can’t go on with the NHS like it is, getting ever more cash and not improving.

midgetastic · 06/03/2024 07:40

I'd love to see the evidence that as a whole the NHS is providing poor value for money

Because every independent review I ever find says that they do bloody well with the limited finds they get

Sone European countries do better but with a higher spend

And top of the wastage list is the USA with almost double the per head spend and worse outcomes: : performance- that's true waste

I'd hate to be paying more taxes - I really think it's inherited wealth that needs to be the source of new income as that has distorted the housing market and created such huge inequities

I do think it's wrong to cut taxes now not raise them somehow given all the problems we face

But I hate even more people justifying them selves not wanting to pay more tax by pretending that the NHS is fundamentally wasteful

Garlicking · 06/03/2024 04:31

Doesn't change the overall picture, does it, @TiredCatLady.

Well yes it does when the thread is about putting more money into the NHS. It looks like you are trying to say, look at all these countries that are better funded than the NHS, when the chart says no such thing.

@Newbutoldfather have you got the NHS app? It’s actually pretty good, in my experience, for getting scan and blood test data uploaded, ordering prescriptions etc - I won’t complain about this aspect, it works well for me!

dogwhistler · 06/03/2024 07:41

The whole thing with funding is what metric do you use to measure? % GDP? Per capita? Per bed?

Quornflakegirl · 06/03/2024 07:41

Absolutely not.

@Toooldforthis36 ,

Yes I do, and you are right, it is a massive improvement, but not all hospitals upload results to it, and some only do it months after the relevant test.

The city councils have been starved of money for at least 13 years. The NHS, ditto. More or less everything, ditto.

Malarandras · 06/03/2024 07:43

If I see the evidence that more money means better services first. Until that happens then no I absolutely would not be happy about that.
