To HATE my dog

We have a 7 year old pug who literally drives me nuts, he comes upstairs whilst we are out pisses on the banister. I am so sick of cleaning/re-painting. We have quite a big garden and all he does is chase passers by barking constantly. I know a dog is for life and everything but since having kids I really do not have the time and every time I look at him he just annoys me. It is really unfair to him as he could be with a family who love him, dont get me wrong, the kids LOVE him so I could not get rid but he just really gets on my nerves. I used to love dogs, we got a cat a year or so ago and he is amazing!

Yeah, you probably should have trained him.

it’s not too late.

Kosenrufugirl · 04/03/2024 16:15

Why can't you get a gate for the bottom of the stairs?

Blossomo · 04/03/2024 16:15

He never used to do this, it is as he got older. My mum now refuses to look after him when we go away as he just cocks his leg up everywhere in the house. I honestly never thought I would completely change to a cat person but I get so much pleasure from him. a

Get a child gate and lock him in the kitchen whilst you’re out.

Blossomo · 04/03/2024 16:17

I just feel bad that I really do not like him.

Training is key and it sounds like he’s never been trained. Poor dog, you’ve let him down and are now moaning about him? Rehome him to someone who’ll love and cherish him, it really annoys me when people get dogs then whine about them when children come along.

2024Melanie · 04/03/2024 16:18

Perhaps some sessions with a dog behaviour expert. Its not too late.

K0OLA1D · 04/03/2024 16:19

Has he got his nuts?

Blossomo · 04/03/2024 16:19

Yes still got his nuts

Well that would be step one for me

SquashPenguin · 04/03/2024 16:20

As a fellow pug mum, you need a stair gate for a start. My boy doesn’t go upstairs. Pugs can be quite difficult to train but I would look into a behaviourist. Has he had the snip?

Does it actually change anything?

Sorry, but all that is purely down to a lack of training, and that isn't the dog's fault.

What training have you already done to try and stop this behaviour? If you outline what you've already tried and how long for, people might be able to suggest stuff.

AffIt · 04/03/2024 16:23

I joined this thread prepared to be kind and understanding and, if possible, give the benefit of any experience I have, but fuck me - if you do not understand why an unneutered, untrained dog in middle age might be displaying signs of stress, then hell mend you, quite frankly.

DirtyKit · 04/03/2024 16:23

And yes you are being unfair to him

Very well put. 👏

He's scent marking. My collie used to be a pain in the arse to walk on a lead as he would be stopping literally every few paces to cock his leg, even if he had ran out of wee! We had him neutered at 3 and it literally stopped overnight

Oohhyeah · 04/03/2024 16:25

You haven't bothered training him, didn't get him neutered and don't bother putting gates up to restrict him, yet you're blaming him for his behaviour 🤔

You wouldn't be saying that if you'd got an entire Tom spraying piss up every wall, corner and your kids' beds.

Or maybe that's what the dog is trying to cover up? Stench of unneutered cat?

Blossomo · 04/03/2024 16:30

The cat is Neutered

This! I wish I had a pound for every (usually woman) that buys a dog as a surrogate child and then doesn't want it when the real thing comes along. Poor dog probably knows it's been replaced and is suffering from anxiety.
