To be put off bloke for silly reason?

Been seeing someone for a few weeks, we went to cinema at weekend and at the end of the film he stood up and clapped. A few people were staring at him and laughing - I was mortified and I know it’s a stupid reason but it’s really given me the “ick”. I don’t know why it’s got to me so much. I guess I’m being unreasonable? In hindsight there have been other examples of him drawing attention to himself and I just find it really embarrassing and it makes me uncomfortable. I’m extremely introverted which obviously doesn’t help!

OP posts:

Cringe. Your ick is justified. Invent a job move to Australia.

AllEars112232 · 04/03/2024 06:59

I'd be put off too! And I don't describe myself as introverted.
This stage of a relationship is about seeing if you like like each other.. This sounds like this behaviour is enough, along with the other things you've spotted, too call time on this one.

EspressoMacchiato · 04/03/2024 07:01

That’s one way of drawing attention to yourself.

If you stick around you’ll find lots more I’m sure. But if you’ve already got the ick, let him go. Trust your gut.

Cheville · 04/03/2024 07:02

If ‘drawing attention to himself’ is a cardinal sin for you, then this isn’t going to work.

YoureALizardHarry11 · 04/03/2024 07:02

No, you’re not unreasonable, OP. Did you ask him why he did it? I feel a bit mean but it did make me really laugh reading that 😂😂😂 It’s mortifying.

Spidey66 · 04/03/2024 07:03

That's embarrassing. Theatre, yes. Cinema, no!

Dostadning · 04/03/2024 07:06

Well, we need to know the film now obviously!!

I don't know OP, it's something me and my kids have down occasionally at the movies where the four of us have clapped and yayed at the end. Never a solo standing ovation though! Grin

I might give him points for enthusiasm Wink

Doingmybest12 · 04/03/2024 07:07

I've been to the cinema where there has been applause at the end. It can be a lovely warm moment abd i suppose someone has to start it. Not sure about the standing up though, is he generally excitable and emotional, or earnest. This wouldn't be a no on its own necessarily for me but I assume he generally conducts him self in a way you don't find attractive. That's fine.

DrJoanAllenby · 04/03/2024 07:30

Every time I looked at him I would have a mental image of a seal clapping

LlynTegid · 04/03/2024 07:36

You have found he likes to draw attention to himself and you don't like it. Perfectly reasonable to end any relationship.

determinedtomakethiswork · 04/03/2024 07:40

Was it all of us strangers? I know people were clapping that. Or Vanya?

GrandHighPoohbah · 04/03/2024 07:40

In my experience, if something irritates or embarrasses you early on, it doesn't go away. Move him along.

bradpittsbathwater · 04/03/2024 07:41

How weird and embarrassing. Definitely get rid.

JJathome · 04/03/2024 07:52

You don’t owe anyone a relationship. You can make the decision to exit for any reason you please. And you don’t need permission from mumsnet

KrisAkabusi · 04/03/2024 07:55

Is be American? That's normal behaviour there.

BakedTattie · 04/03/2024 07:56

Ha! Hilarious.

total ick, Chuck.

DillDanding · 04/03/2024 07:57

That’s not a silly reason. He’s a twat.

ThisHonestQuail · 04/03/2024 07:59

Ick!!

Clangered · 04/03/2024 07:59

He’ll clap at the end of a flight too. Definitely not unreasonable.

TheQueenMakersDaughter · 04/03/2024 08:33

That's a no from me.

burnoutbabe · 04/03/2024 08:36

True

Or sone of the Oscar nominees they are showing at present. A few of them feel like they may need a clap at the end. Or something to express something.

If it was dune part 2, that's odd!

blobby10 · 04/03/2024 08:38

Trust your 'ick'! My 'ick' moment was a second date - meal in a pub and he licked his knife!!! Its not like I don't ever lick my knife (at home) but this bloke doing it in the pub just set off all sorts of alarms in my head and I refused to see him again!Grin

Grimchmas · 04/03/2024 08:39

You'll just be waiting, cringeing, for the next round of spontaneous standing ovation.

I bet he congratulates himself after sex

But why? It’s not like anyone who has anything to do with the film is going to hear your appreciation

mildlydispeptic · 04/03/2024 08:41

Yes, but what movie was it?

Definitely ick inducing, but we need to know if the circumstances were extenuating or aggravating.
