to think my dentist should not have f*****d up my first botox?

regretbot · 03/03/2024 20:49

I had my first botox a few weeks ago, I asked for a subtle eye brow lift and came away with a completely immobile and bruised left side of my forehead. I can't raise my left eyebrow at all, it's actually lower than it was in the first place. The right side has only a tiny movement, but at least it doesn't feel heavy.

In the two week review his reponse to this was to say he'd 'make a note'. Apparently this was so that next time he'd do better. I honestly have no intention of going back. I've lost trust completely.

Is this normal? I signed all sorts of forms before the treatment, but assumed he'd do a good job. He's known me for years. In retrospect he was just looking to sell me as much as possible.

Do I just have to suck it up and wait for the botox to wear off? I mean i know i just have to wait for the botox to wear off, but shouldn't he be offering me a refund or something?

I don't think leaving a public review is a good idea OP. I'm sorry you didn't get the result you wanted but bruising, immobilisation and heaviness are all normal side effects of having botox and therefore the moment you signed the consent form (assuming you read it and signed it), you accepted that there was a risk of these effects happening.

Any decent aesthetic practitioner should inform you of these risk and leave a 'cooling off' period for the patient to digest and ask questions. You don't say if this happened? You should also be offered a 2 week post injection follow up to address re-balancing issues or top-up if necessary. He may be able give better symmetry by injecting more, but you may not want matching low brows? I would email him and ask to pop in to discuss how he could help with symmetry if thats what you want.

Fuck around with putting chemicals into your body and reap the consequences. Instead of finding a certified medical professional you went to a dentist…

MyGooseisTotallyLoose · 03/03/2024 20:51

Sorry you went to a dentist for botox?! As in 'I don't want wrinkles and want a frozen face' botox? A dentist?

This!

A dentist?

Really?

And yes - I think you will most probably have to wait for it to wear off.

The problem with this sort of beauty treatment is that there is pretty much no regulation regarding it, and just about anyone can set up shop.

Bornnotbourne · 04/03/2024 07:58

If you want it to wear off quickly then get into the gym and lift some weights. I had it twice then had to give up as lifting made it metabolise quickly. I’ve instead got a body of a goddess which no one sees and the face of a scrotum which everyone sees.

Dental nurse here!
Dentists are the best professionals you can go to for Botox! They have had extensive training on facial structures and muscles etc.

Obviously not in this case (!)

Bushmillsbabe · 04/03/2024 08:02

I inject botox, but for medical rather than cosmetic reasons, and he is completely correct in saying peoples responses to the same dose can widely vary, and there wasn't really a way to establish this without doing it. I would ask for a written record of the amount he used so if you chose to go somewhere else then they know to use less. Although any reputable practitioner will use less each subsequent time anyway as botox permenantly destroys normal muscle structure, as well as paralysing it temporarily. We wouldn't usually inject the same muscle more than 3 times ever for this reason.

😂😂😂

(I'm in no position to laugh - I have a face like a scone and the body of a small hippo, so no redeeming features whatsoever.)

Good heavens!

I didn't know that.

CuriousWhy · 04/03/2024 08:12

OP, his attitude is horrific. Botox is widely used now and it is pretty unusual to have a reaction like you describe. He sounds like an arrogant man and his attitude is poor. I would not be returning. And yes, leave a bad review because of his attitude.

Icedoatlattelove · 04/03/2024 08:14

I have forehead botox. It takes a two weeks to fully develop. So I don't think he could test your reaction. The bruising will go down. I'm surprised you have immobility straight away. When did you get the injections?

I'm also not sure you can get a lift from botox, in my experience it's not what it does or how it works. But I'm not an expert!

peakygold · 04/03/2024 08:20

Round my way, it's NHS nurses dishing them out in their Mum's converted garage. They have hospital docs on the payroll to sign off the prescriptions. Nice work if you can get it.

😂😂😂😂 this is one of the stupidest comments I’ve ever read on mumsnet. What’s a dentist then, if not an expert in facial tissues and nerves?

Vod · 04/03/2024 08:24

daisychain01 · 04/03/2024 04:24

So you can't get an actual dentist appointment for love nor money but they're now doing side hussles of disfiguring women's faces instead.

Jeez I've heard it all now!

Anyone would think deliberately paying too little to make NHS dentistry viable is a bad idea!

CuriousWhy · 04/03/2024 08:24

Dentists have long extensive training. They usually study the first couple of years alongside medical students. If they have decent Botox training then there is no reason they won’t be highly competent. They do anatomy, physiology, pharmacology etc so are well-placed to undertake Botox.

What makes me angry is when I complete the form before my dental hygienist appt, there are a few questions about wrinkles etc. Clearly trying to scout for new Botox patients. I am seeing the hygienist for the long term care of my gums and teeth. How dare they ask me about aesthetics on the same form. I don’t want Botox for wrinkles thanks so don’t try and advertise for it.

MrsMitford3 · 04/03/2024 08:27

@regretbot is this in the UK?

I am obviously living under a rock-had no idea dentists did botox.

LovelyTheresa · 04/03/2024 08:34

Bobbotgegrinch · 03/03/2024 23:45

Eh, you chose to get a load of crap injected into your face, I'm struggling to sympathise.

Don't be daft.

ClairDeLaLune · 04/03/2024 08:45

Did you read the forms before you signed them?

Of course, they are the best people to do it.

Mummyofbananas · 04/03/2024 08:52

I know someone who's recently trained as a dentist and she said quite a few people who graduated with her went straight into doing fillers/botox rather than dentistry.

Botox does have risks- I had a consultation because I have a lazy muscle on one side- pointed out by my optician- and I wanted to see if botox could lift it. I was told it could work but one of very minor risks is that it cause it to droop further.

ColleenDonaghy · 04/03/2024 09:02

Surprised at the shock on this thread! My very normal dental practice advertises Botox. I wouldn't get it, but if I did I'd be going to a dentist if I couldn't afford a plastic surgeon. Definitely not a nurse! Or a beauty therapist etc.

Hopefully this stuff will become more regulated.

notagainski · 04/03/2024 09:13

I think a dentist would be a good choice for botox. As others have explained they have extensive knowledge of facial structures and nerves as well as injection technique.
I wouldn't have botox myself but if others want to I think that's fine and that's their choice.
But, I'm actually appalled that dentists (private ones obviously) are spending time doing botox instead of concentrating on people's teeth. Something is seriously wrong with dentistry in the UK - people can't get NHS dentists; dental health is deteriorating; in some areas it's very difficult to get a private dentist appointment never mind an NHS one and yet dentists are doing botox.

I think with private dentists - I.e. most dentists - like the rest of the world money talks, it's more profit 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Perhaps i should have said this is a dentist whose primary focus is skin aesthetics. I've had other treatments there before. I'm quite surprised the consensus seems to be that I deserve what i get for using a dentist though. What even is a skin aesthetician?

It seems crazy to me that you can ask someone for one thing, and they give you another and even F**k that up, and we just shrug and say accidents can happen. It's not like it's cheap.

I did go for my two week appointment and that's when he offered, as a concession, to make a note to do it better 'next time'. The only way he could have fixed the asymetry would have been to remove all expression from my other eye. He suggested that it was my fault for being extra sensitive to it and said I could try hot compress to try to break the botox down quickly.

If hairdressers can do 24 hour skin tests for hair dye you'd think, if sensitivity levels are so variable, a responsible botoxer would test customer's reaction before injecting it everywhere?

Would I be crazy to leave a public review saying this guy doesn't really listen, just tries to squeeze as cash much out of his clients as possible and that he's also clumsy and doesn't give a shit?

I've had good and bad dentists in the past few years, for root canal and bridge/crown work. The main work was ok and for the latter treatment it had to be ok, as it has to last, but both dentists, I wasn't 100% happy with.

The one who did the crown/bridge work now does botox etc and I also visited another dentists when I was looking for a new one, who said they did botox. That really put me off registering with them.

As a PP says, I'd rather have a skin aesthetician do treatments if I had them, rather than a dentist.

Blueshirtfluffdog · 04/03/2024 09:23

Dentists are better than doctors at Botox as they have greater knowledge of facial nerves/ muscles etc.

Botox should not bruise at all. And you certainly shouldn’t have droop. You can probably get it rectified but I’d go elsewhere. And absolutely ask for your money back so you can do this.

There’s a lot of people on here that get inexplicably angry at Botox so ignore them. You paid for a service and it’s not been delivered

LuckySantangelo35 · 04/03/2024 09:27

ignore those posters faux incredulous that a dentist does Botox - loads of them do.

you have just been unlucky op. Hopefully they can remedy it when you have your two week review.
