To have bathed my niece?

I babysit my toddler niece regularly as I don't work Fridays and have a daughter around the same age so they play together and generally have a nice time. Niece has never stayed over as SIL doesn't like being away from her overnight.

Yesterday I had my niece and SIL was working later than normal so picked her up about 6:30.

We baked and decorated cakes in the afternoon and naturally both kids had flour, icing and whatever else all over them and in their hair etc so I put them both in the bath and washed their hair. I popped my niece in a pair of my daughters pj's.

When dear SIL arrived I explained they'd got a bit messy so I'd bathed and changed her. She didn't say much and left quite quickly.

I've had a text this morning saying she doesn't want me to babysit again for a while as I've crossed a boundary bathing her child and she would never dream of bathing a child that wasn't hers.

I am mortified and devastated to be honest. Did I really do such a terrible thing?

You looked after her child so well and on a regular basis. I bet she had some downtime whilst you were busy looking after her child. It’s nice she apologised and good that she’s going to get a paid babysitter to do the work she expected from you. Did she ever look after your child at all? Seeing that you looked after her child on your only day off in the week. Enjoy the freedom of not having to look after your SIL child.

That's a lovely update op, so glad it ended amicably. She'll get a bit of a shock paying her higher nursery bills, and will wish that she hadn't ended it!

I reckon she's seen this thread and realised how ridiculous she's been.

Agreeing her DC should go to nursery Fridays was an excellent suggestion.

I have bathed my nieces and nephew, I have also bathed my nephew from SIL. They have bathed my children. I find it quite weird how she has reacted and would be concerned she's hiding something.

Have you asked her why she thinks you've crossed the boundaries? Explain you thought you were doing her a favour to save her taking a messy child home late & that you treat your Niece as you would your Daughter. She's family & you didn't think she would mind coz she doesn't mind you caring for her little one so why should she mind you bathing her? It's very odd that she feels this way after all you're with her little one all day & change nappies which I assume she's fine with.

God I did this exact thing the other day- babysat for a friend and got the child covered in icing.
i bathed her without a second thought and my friend was very grateful she didn’t have to do it. Your sil sounds mad, let her sort her own childcare
