Will my kids get 'bullied' if I make them take their things out with a bum bag?

I want them to have somewhere to keep their phone, wallet and sweets. A rucksack is no good. Would a bumbag be acceptable?

This is how da yoof are wearing bumbags

Everyone wear bum bags like this. Even the Uniqlo bag is an evolution of this. It’s very much the norm.

they’ll be fine OP. And in fashion.

Seeline · 02/03/2024 11:43

Both my DCs (Ds22 and DD 19) use cross body bum bags all the time both home (London) and at unis. Have done for the last 4 years or so. Really practical. DD wears one clubbing and everything!

LarkspurLane · 02/03/2024 11:48

My DC cycle a lot and the cross body bag is super handy. Neither of them (one in particular) would wear anything that might be unacceptable to their peers.

That said, they don't wear them to school - rucksack for school stuff, pockets for phones, pens and the dreaded chewing gum.

Need more information - how old are they? When would they be using it? Is this for a holiday? A day out? Generally? What's the context here?

Minniliscious · 02/03/2024 11:53

DS uses something like this when pockets won't quite do and he doesn't want to take a full bag. But he's nerd central so may not be the best person to give fashion advice. Works for him though!

That’s what the teens round my neck of the woods wear to carry their stash in, usually with a snide Moncler coat 😂

No they are popular- called “Fanny packs “ rather than bum bags which makes me cringe. Worn across the body on diagonal rather than round the waist.

kids wear them at festivals etc, and my 19 year old wears one when out socialising to hold her phone, ID and epipens. Let them choose the bag though.

My 21-year old son and his friends (girls and boys) have had them for years. Your dd mustn’t have many male friends.

Or as other people have noticed, it's different in different parts of the country!

IMustDoMoreExercise · 02/03/2024 11:38

The OP is talking absolute sense. I wouldn't put my valuables in a rucksack for that very reason.

So you have a recepticle attached to you at all times?

Yes, this too (not that I am in the country if you mean UK).

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 02/03/2024 13:41

Posh bit of Sowf London. Bum bags are OUT.

Phone pouches are in. Basically a small bag with enough space for your phone, debit card, door key and Oyster card which is worn across the body. Kipling do nice but expensive ones.

Timetogohome2 · 02/03/2024 13:43

We are in London too and our late teenage nieces wouldn’t be caught dead with them (just asked them).

According to them they are a “middle age woman thing, especially the Uniqlo one with people trying to make themselves look younger” and if the see a guy with them then there is an assumption that they are a drug dealer

Personally I think they look ridiculous at any age

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 02/03/2024 13:44

@Timetogohome2 agree. Once your mum wants one, you move on VERY quickly.

serin · 02/03/2024 13:44

DS said Cotopaxi is a good place to start.
They look 1980s old fashioned to me but what do I know 😳

CurlewKate · 02/03/2024 13:51

Every late teen early twenty where I live has a Uniclo cross body. My ds has two.

selectiveparticipations · 02/03/2024 13:51

My ds has one of these. Not sure if it’s classed as a bum bag..

They don’t need to be carrying sweets, so that is a third of the items removed from the conundrum.

hth

For Friday afternoon at the park. Not breakfast.

Old enough to have a phone and wallet, but a backpack is too complicated for them? I don’t even know anyone with a wallet these days, ceryainly not a child or teenager..

Edited

Not too complicated. It would be put down if they are playing football.

If your children can’t be trusted to either a) look after their own things or b) choose an appropriate bag to put them in without mummy asking mumsnet then they probably shouldn’t be going out wandering the streets alone 🤷‍♀️ don’t make them wear a bumbag

This is true. I've intentionally not detailed our exact itinerary. Apologies for the confusion.
