Will my kids get 'bullied' if I make them take their things out with a bum bag?

I want them to have somewhere to keep their phone, wallet and sweets. A rucksack is no good. Would a bumbag be acceptable?

I need to know how old these kids are…

Me too.

I’m assuming they’re quite young if they’re carrying around sweets and have no say on what bag they like and can’t be trusted with a rucksack.

I’m thinking it’s for a school trip or something.

idontlikealdi · 02/03/2024 08:21

Dts will not use bags if any description. Bank card
Goes in phone case, phone gets balanced in their waist and. I've given up trying to get them to use a bag.

Bum bags are for road men here.

I haven’t seen any kids wearing one and I work in a school….

At school most children use a backpack. I see loads of teens young and older teens wearing bum bags across their chest whilst out playing after school

This is how da yoof are wearing bumbags

Omg!
🤣🤣
absolutely hideous

DeathMetalMum · 02/03/2024 08:32

Dd has a cross body bag from primark. Other teens have similar with Nike branding round here.

Babymamamama · 02/03/2024 08:40

My DC is of an age where they wouldn’t take any fashion advice or even practical advice from me. And a bumbag would be rejected outright. I get around this by only purchasing my DC jackets that have a large ish zippable secure pocket. All the better if inside the coat. Doesn’t help in summer but it certainly is useful in the colder months for stashing the phone, bus-pass keys etc when DC goes out independently. I’ve never seen any teen round out way wearing a bum bag.

Createausername1970 · 02/03/2024 08:45

You say wallet rather than purse, so I assume a boy? Speaking as a parent of a male child/teen/young adult who could misplace an elephant in an empty room, cargo trousers were the way to go. Lots of storage.

Wellhellooooodear · 02/03/2024 08:51

My DD 13 has a mini rucksack and my DS11 an Adidas cross body bag. I've seen lots of kids with bumbag worn as a cross body bag.

Kelly51 · 02/03/2024 08:57

Why the 'make them' attitude? all it creates is resentment, having parents issuing demands. What age are they?

AllstarFacilier · 02/03/2024 09:13

It must depend where you live, as I’ve never seen kids wearing them like PPs have posted. I’ve seen lots of models wearing them like that, but thought it was something that didn’t translate to the high street.

I work in a secondary, and we went on a shopping trip recently. The girls took handbags and boys took rucksacks or nothing at all and had stuff in their coat pockets or kind of sports drawstring bags.

Babymamamama · 02/03/2024 09:25

Not sure of your kids ages but by mid teens most round our way have Apple Pay or similar on their phones. Wallets not really a thing at all. Yes and I agree with others it’s hard to impose these things so I would pick your battles.

Honeysucklerouge · 02/03/2024 09:26

Teen boys here just have zippy pockets in their joggers .. also only buy coats with zippy pockets . Youngest has a very small rucksack - think it’s 5-10litres but that carries a lunch and a water bottle if he’s out on his bike .

MamaMode · 02/03/2024 09:28

My DS14 has a Nike bumbag when he wears across his body (not across his waist). He only uses it to carry a small snack in when going to his extra-curriculars. He does not use it on other days or to carry items like phone/keys. Generally he prefers a rucksack

PegasusReturns · 02/03/2024 09:37

Man bags and cross body bum bags quite popular where I am in central london.

Young girls are favouring the lulul lemon cross body.

Imbusytodaysorry · 02/03/2024 09:37

You can get one of those mini ruck sacks form the likes of mountain warehouse .

My son would use one when out with his bike and the dog.

Old enough to have a phone and wallet, but a backpack is too complicated for them? I don’t even know anyone with a wallet these days, ceryainly not a child or teenager..

Walkaround · 02/03/2024 09:47

If they’ll put a rucksack down, they might do exactly the same thing with a bumbag worn across the body like a small bag, OP. And they will not want a bumbag strapped around their waist (which as well as not looking cool, could also be somewhat annoying when they need the loo).

Goblinmodeactivated · 02/03/2024 09:49

yes bum bags are in, worn across the body; this option is fine OP

LaylaLayla1 · 02/03/2024 09:52

Ive just asked my kids about bum bags and they started laughing said there is no way they would use them (they are teens).

I think your kids might be made fun of with their “Fanny packs” as the Americans call them.

ArcticOwl · 02/03/2024 09:52

its small backpacks or those stupid cross body things here.. seems to be gendered too.. girls go for the backpacks, lads, the cross body.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 02/03/2024 09:53

SE London/Kent borders. Kids aka teens either carry cross body bags slung high on body or crossbody bags or rucksacks or nothing. Anything from cheaper to designer.

Yes, there are some who aspire to the road man look but some who equally just want to be able to carry more stuff around with them. As a teenager myself years ago I rarely carried a bag, unless it was a school bag.

OP if you feel your kids need or want something just ask them ffs. They can then choose what they want.

Excited101 · 02/03/2024 09:56

Bum bags across the body is most definitely a ‘thing’. But tbh op, if your kids are old enough to go out on their own, they’re old enough to figure out how to carry their stuff.

AngelicInnocent · 02/03/2024 09:59

Student DD advises Cross body us fine for girls who are clubbing or at festivals.

Any other time or for males, they become 'ket' bags.

DontBeTheLastPage · 02/03/2024 10:01

My teenage son is in private school and has just gone out wearing a cross body bum bag. I was thinking how refreshing it is that teens have found a practical fashion - and makes sense as they all have phones, which can fall out of pockets - and I see them everywhere, so I'm really surprised that clearly it's not as universal as I thought according to this thread!

(And I'm fairly sure he's not carrying ketamine in it, haha! I had no idea it had that connotation!!)

repopupieres · 02/03/2024 10:03

Before my children were of an age that they could remember their own rucksack, I had their things in my own rucksack/backpack.

Are there additional needs here? If it's for something like a school trip, presumably everyone is in the same position.
