Will my kids get 'bullied' if I make them take their things out with a bum bag?

I want them to have somewhere to keep their phone, wallet and sweets. A rucksack is no good. Would a bumbag be acceptable?

Isn't it part of the roadman look.willing to be corrected

Yes, round here anyway, and not something I'd be encouraging.

SKG231 · 02/03/2024 05:17

Let them choose their own bag. It’s personal preference.

uggmum · 02/03/2024 05:29

How about this from Uniqlo I have a couple in different colours.

I wear it across the body and can fit in all my essentials.

My kid doesn't even have a wallet, card is in his phone case.

He does have an Adidas cross body bag though, rarely uses it

Just asked ds(19) about bum bags and he said “no, absolutely not! Nobody uses them. Only on holiday”

He has always had trousers with zips or deep pockets, never used a wallet as he had contactless on his phone and an emergency £10 tucked into the case.

He never lost anything, if they are prone to losing things they need to face the consequences so they learn to take better care of their stuff.

Does he really need to carry sweets regularly?

Agree.
Just asked my teens and they said a huge NO!
No-one wears them around here.
My kids also do as above.... tickets, cash on phone, Zip card and spare tenner in phone case.
What kid carries a wallet?

Sweetheart7 · 02/03/2024 07:31

Why are you choosing your kids bags? How old are they?

Ducksinthebath · 02/03/2024 07:35

Old enough for a phone = old enough to work out how to carry it

Spirallingdownwards · 02/03/2024 07:36

So as we can see from the thread it depends where in the country you are as to whether it in or out. Always makes me laugh that people assume where they are is the norm or what they wear is the norm.

But even if in then let them choose rather than buying the wrong one. My son has one used for festivals and travel but had to be a certain brand!

Trulyme · 02/03/2024 07:51

Bum bags are very cool…if you are already a cool person.

Same with man bags.

It’s like with everything really.
It takes a certain person to be able to pull it off.

Bum bags are in fashion but if the friends or people around them aren’t wearing them then it won’t appear to be fashionable to their peers.

Where are your kids going?
Is it a school trip?
How old are they and are they male or female?

Need so much more info! Bumbags worn cross body potentially acceptable if they are from Hackney but not the mean streets of private school... get me? Bless up.

🤣🤣

Containerhome · 02/03/2024 07:54

Lots of teens have cross body bags at the moments where I live.

Yes, very much so around here.

VanCleefArpels · 01/03/2024 23:46

This is how da yoof are wearing bumbags

Ah yes, the 'drug dealer chic' look.

Starspangledrodeopony · 02/03/2024 08:01

I need to know how old these kids are…

HMW1906 · 02/03/2024 08:06

If your children can’t be trusted to either a) look after their own things or b) choose an appropriate bag to put them in without mummy asking mumsnet then they probably shouldn’t be going out wandering the streets alone 🤷‍♀️ don’t make them wear a bumbag

Towerofsong · 02/03/2024 07:59

Ah yes, the 'drug dealer chic' look.

I think that’s slightly unfair - it’s fairly ubiquitous in our very white MC suburb, more a fashion led thing

Divebar2021 · 02/03/2024 08:08

It’s reasonable to assume that cross body bags are acceptable given how popular those Uniqlo ones have been across the US & U.K. Not that Uniqlo is big among teenagers but more there seems to be less difference in fashion between countries now. ( sadly). Personally I’d give them the dilemma and get them to solve it rather than trying to impose something on them.

circlesand · 02/03/2024 08:08

Just get a cross body bag, or clothes with decent sized pockets. Traditional bum bags worn around the waist are not stylish at the moment and I don't think they have been since the 70's.

seven201 · 02/03/2024 08:11

Depends on where you live and would have to be worn as an across body bag. I own a bum bag for practical reasons, I tried to wear it across the body once and it kept getting in the way so sacked it off. Uniqlo of asos have good ranges.

Loopytiles · 02/03/2024 08:11

Wow, this is like stepping back in time, my Mum proposed bum bags for all for a family holiday once and was a rare moment of siblings uniting!

TubeScreamer · 02/03/2024 08:13

yes they will

I’d still need a chaperone or to stay home then.

Some kids need assistance with personal organisation for longer than others!

DS2 was more organised than me age 3. He never left a toy in a shop. DS1 doesn’t take anything anywhere because he knows it won’t come home. At 55 I’ve landed somewhere in the middle. I often forget to take things with me. I usually remember to bring everything home.

Calamitousness · 02/03/2024 08:14

It’s not a thing where I live. No kids with that look but we are quite rural.
it would not fly here and your kids would get laughed at.
definitely ask them. They’ll know the best thing to do for their peer group.

NotStayingIn · 02/03/2024 08:15

To answer your question; I’d imagine that yes, your kid might get bullied if they are wearing something no one else at their school uses and they don’t have the confidence to pull that off.

I think asking here will not help. You need to either let them decide or get out in your area and see what the youth in your kids school or local area use.

Onelifeonly · 02/03/2024 08:19

Why do they need a wallet or sweets? My kids have their payment card on their phones. Sweets make you fat. Phones fit in most jeans and coat / jacket pockets. Even I, at my advanced age, have been known to go out only with my phone stuffed in my pocket and door key ditto.
