Husband hates taking his shoes off inside

… that’s it, really.

We live in a city centre, and when we walk outside, we frequently see dog poo on the pavements, and occasionally vermin.

However, I apparently am a massive nag because I want him to take his outdoor shoes* off when inside our flat or other people’s homes.

*I even bought him really nice slippers, as I know he doesn’t like the feeling of walking barefoot through the flat. He puts them on most of the time but still complains that I am being difficult.

It may not surprise you to learn I am the person who does almost all of the cleaning.

Can anyone else relate to this situation or AIBU?

DS’s cat comes in through his cat flap in the middle of the night and goes straight to sleep on DS’s bed.

I don’t think he wakes himeself up and showers off the cat’s paws.

Most cats clean themselves to the extent their paws are always almost shiny though tbf. 😅 Dogs, not so much.

But he leaves cute little paw prints 🐾 on the bed!💕

I wear my shoes in the house if I've just got in or just going out but have a pair of bouncy Croc like sliders that are comfy indoors but still ok to pop to the bin to the garden when it's wet out. I don't like walking indoors with nothing on my feet because we have a busy household and pets.

I'm a few decades old, and do not know a single person or family where shoes are not allowed indoors except for muddy wellies and football boots. Saying that, my family all love their slippers but it's a choice.

This just shows that the people around you are very similar, or you haven't been to a variety of houses/places. You can't pretend that shoes-off is some kind of fringe tradition.

Very common to have shoes off. I also know lots of shoes-on. I can't say it's anything other than a 50/50 split.

My 15-year old cat agrees! 🐾🐾

It's his house too I assume, so I'm not sure why you think you get to make rules about his footwear. You don't wear shoes, he wears shoes - and you actually split the cleaning.

He can wear shoes. Indoor shoes. If he is too lazy to change shoes, it says a lot about how little he cares about his partner. This is what it comes down to.

I don’t take my shoes off inside, I don’t tend to stand in dog shit though and I’m also the one that does all the cleaning.

@MorningSunshineSparkles

i don’t stand it. But other people do then walk over the pavements etc so there will be traces of shit all over even if not visible.

Quite normal to remove your outdoor shoes in Norway, even if you’re a visitor. Nice, clean wooden floors and rugs 💫 Stomping about in outdoor shoes is just yuk.

Angelsrose · 02/03/2024 11:26

Shoes you have worn outside in the house are a no no. Just as your DH has slippers he could just buy a pair of outdoor shoes for indoor use only. Trailing dirt around the house with dirty outside shoes is utterly unthinkable.

But he's not splitting the cleaning and he can just buy a pair of outdoor shoes to wear indoors instead of bringing germs into the clean house.

Same here in Sweden. I can’t imagine anyone wearing shoes indoors. Our wooden floors aren’t cold either, but if they were I’d just wear warmer socks or slippers.

BlueGrey1 · 02/03/2024 11:32

I think outdoor shoes inside is fine unless there are small children crawling around the floors, then I would prefer if people took their outdoor shoes off but I would never ask a guest to remove their shoes.

I remember being in a house recently where hosts asked guests to take their shoes off and one of the guests had a hole in their socks…I was embarrassed for him (you could see that he was also uncomfortable) I personally think it’s bad etiquette to ask guests to remove their shoes

Sweaty feet on your flooring. Lovely.

Far better than grime from outside.

LovelyTheresa · 02/03/2024 11:34

YABVU. It's his house as well. Is he really in the habit of tracking in dog poo!? If so, that is obviously a huge issue, but if not, get a mat for him to wipe his feet from general grime. I hate people who are precious about shoes in the house, it is very rude to guests to expect them to remove their shoes.

Clearly a matter of opinion. I'd much prefer people keep their shoes on in my house.

Natsku · 02/03/2024 11:36

If he wants to wear outdoor shoes inside then he needs to clean the floors, every time.

But wearing outdoor shoes inside is just nasty. I'm in Finland, everyone takes their shoes off inside. School children take their shoes off at school (and so do adults visiting - go to parents evening, you have to take your shoes off!). In offices its common to change into indoor shoes. I change into slippers at my school. Visitors automatically take their shoes off when they arrive at your house, you never have to ask. The only exception is plumbers, electricians, and suchlike, who might need to keep their safety shoes on.

We had some workmen here and as they were going back and forth getting things from their car we told them to keep their shoes on. They looked absolutely horrified and said of course they’d take them off. 😂

We both hate being bare footed and haven’t owned slippers since childhood. We change into clean indoor shoes or boots when we get home.
Simple.

This is normal if you don't like slippers. Clean shoes for indoor use only.

That makes me very very glad I don't live in Finland! I hate being barefoot and I don't really like slippers. Why do people think that their floors trump their guests' comfort!? That is rude, inhospitable behaviour in my world.

selectiveparticipations · 02/03/2024 11:38

@Natsku School children take their shoes off here too, as do parents going there. Or put plastic shoe covers on.

This would be an acceptable compromise, but barefoot or slippers? No.

And in my world its beyond rude to wear shoes in someone else's house. If you had grown up with these rules you'd think differently from how you do now, because you'd be used to being without shoes.

We are quite happy to keep Scandinavia to ourselves. 😅

Because it’s their floor?
