So by inference Grandmas are out of fashion and not in a cool way?

You see how this works? It’s lazy stereotyping putting certain people into certain groups just because they fit one criteria.

I think grandmas often get to the point in their life when they want to wear what they want because they like it and they don’t care what anyone else thinks. As long as they are happy, then so what? Which (can/ often) makes them unfashionable. 'Not in a good way' is debatable, but it’s probably that part of the fashion cycle that is further away from what is 'in' than what is 'out'.

Laiste · 28/02/2024 10:00

Whats interesting is if you google images of 'Old fashioned bedroom' you get this sort of thing which is an obviously Laura Ashley ish style which hasn't really got a root in any authentic period ...

https://www.google.com/search?q=old+fashioned+bedroom&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwj9pu704c2EAxXJTKQEHYo5AzkQ2-cCegQIABAA&oq=old+fashioned+bedroom&gs_lp=EgNpbWciFW9sZCBmYXNoaW9uZWQgYmVkcm9vbSoCCAAyBBAjGCcyBRAAGIAEMgUQABiABDIFEAAYgAQyBRAAGIAEMgUQABiABDIFEAAYgAQyBRAAGIAEMgYQABgHGB4yBhAAGAcYHkiumAVQxQdYwYEFcAB4AJABAJgBnwSgAZUbqgEMMy4xMS4yLjEuMS4xuAEByAEA-AEBigILZ3dzLXdpei1pbWfCAgoQABiABBiKBRhDwgIQEAAYgAQYigUYQxixAxiDAcICDRAAGIAEGIoFGEMYsQOIBgE&sclient=img&ei=rQLfZb2cHcmZkdUPivOMyAM&bih=760&biw=1486

and then if you google '50s bedroom' you get what i think is what is genuinely meant when people say 'old fashioned' or 'grannyish' ie: what their grannys might have had.

LoobyDop · 28/02/2024 10:00

It’s very traditional. If you like it you could get away with calling it cottagecore.

LittleGuinea · 28/02/2024 10:01

My grandma (in her 80s) has very similar bed linen - that makes it grandma-ish to me! Not sexist or ageist surely to observe that some styles are more to the taste of certain generations or to women more than men.

CurlewKate · 28/02/2024 10:11

@Laiste "If you're saying there is a stereotype - but that you're not it - then why worry?"

Does that apply to all stereotyping? If you're not it then no need to bother about it?

MorrisZapp · 28/02/2024 10:19

I love a tiny floral and the more grannyish, the better. Surely that's the whole point, many of us yearn for the comfort and simplicity of the days when staying at granny's was a treat.

Must admit I don't like that particular floral, as others have said, it's not quite 'right' to my eye, but if you love it then life's too short. Do exactly what gives you joy.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 28/02/2024 11:18

If you live in an 18th century cottage it would be great. Less so in a modern flat.

Dontcallmescarface · 28/02/2024 11:41

I'm closer to 60 than 50 and sorry OP but I think it's awful. Having said that, if I was to post a picture of my duvet cover most of MN would recoil in horror. 😂

Fannyfiggs · 28/02/2024 11:51

Serious question - if I call my underpants granny knickers, am I being ageist, sexist, using a stereotype and being offensive?

Edited to say I am of an age where I could be a granny

Brefugee · 28/02/2024 12:13

yes, just call them big knickers, ffs.

Mischance · 28/02/2024 12:14

Could this be an advert!!??

I don't think anybody has the right to police what you call your own knickers!

Well now you're going to have to!

StrawberrySquash · 28/02/2024 12:28

Different groups have different tastes. You see lots of talk about millennials' home style and the like. I think what OP was trying to communicate is 'Is this me?' We can't pretend that things like duvet covers have certain social signals about our group. We are social creatures. This stuff has meaning.

W0tnow · 28/02/2024 12:36

Now I need to know where we stand on mom jeans.

Motnight · 28/02/2024 12:40

Laiste · 28/02/2024 09:52

I really can't get too fussed about the grandma thing.

If you're saying there is a stereotype - but that you're not it - then why worry?

Because stereotyping is lazy and damaging. Sex, race? These are the things most commonly stereotyped. Now do you see?

TheLightOfEarlyMorning · 28/02/2024 12:56

Everything's a stereotype if you’re going to go down that route.

Teen clothing
French chic
Italian style
Country style living
City living
Mum wear
Dad clothing
Granny chic

It's how humans categorise. Whether these categories have negative connotations is down to the listener/ reader. All of the above bring a picture to my mind. None of it bad.

gamerchick · 28/02/2024 12:58

I like it. I could climb into that picture me Grin

Cloclo93 · 28/02/2024 12:59

Country cottage look! I like it and I'm 30

DappledThings · 28/02/2024 13:06

I love it! I have some mild-middling arachnophobia and I still like that. Although it's a bit too much white for me. White in anything (walls, bedding, clothes, dishes) makes me feel a bit uncomfortable and tense

Laiste · 28/02/2024 13:11

Granddad shirt ..... ?

I'm an all white bedding person myself. A million zillion thread count.
