Nothing faux about my
offence thanks
im
not offended
just fed up of this place tolerating ageism

Octavia64 · 28/02/2024 08:01

I think it's old fashioned

My DD who is 23 would love it.

Ikeatears · 28/02/2024 08:02

W0tnow · 28/02/2024 07:57

Very much so. But if you like it…?

I’d say it’s grandma-ish. But I’d mean my grandma. Who would be about 120 if she were still with us!

Edited

Exactly.

Rosestulips · 28/02/2024 08:07

I like it, my Mum who is a Granny doesn’t. So in our house not grandma-ish

IncognitoUsername · 28/02/2024 08:10

Old fashioned yes
Grandma ish no

Does that help? And no, I’m not faux offended.

Buttercupmush · 28/02/2024 08:11

If you like it does it matter what anyone thinks? Who is going to see it anyway?

CurlewKate · 28/02/2024 08:16

Only on Mumsnet could a thread about a duvet cover be ageist!!!🤣

I know right 😂😂

I am not offended, faux or otherwise

FuzzyPuffling · 28/02/2024 07:57

Not "faux" offence. Genuine offence at thoughtless language. We, rightly, don't accept other "isms" and should not accept ageist language and assumptions either.

Absolutely spot on. I think it’s hideous but then I only like white bed linen.

dontgetscarednow · 28/02/2024 08:24

Thanks everyone.

Yes it was not meant to offend anyone - my mum - who is a 56 year old Grandma - uses the phrase! If we're out shopping she'll often say "it's a bit old granny ish" and she is a granny!

It was quite literally a turn of phrase that I didn't even think about before posting. I'm definitely not ageist (we all get old) or sexist (I'm very much female) it was just a phrase and sorry for any offence caused. It should've said "old fashioned"

I think it's maybe a bit busy so I might go for something a bit more subtle.

BeaRF75 · 28/02/2024 08:25

Well, I'm grandma age and I don't like it - but then I think all bedding should be plain white! If you like it, OP, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks - have confidence in your choices!

dontgetscarednow · 28/02/2024 08:25

@CurlewKate Exactly 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

Do you regular show people your bedroom or post pictures on Facebook? Do you like it?

DinnaeFashYersel · 28/02/2024 08:31

iwiporangi · 28/02/2024 07:15

Ageist question
And sexist

Agree

You either like it or you don't. What age and sec you are is irrelevant.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 28/02/2024 08:34

Well they are selling it so someone obviously likes it. Its not to my taste but if you like it buy it. Develop your own taste.

CurlewKate · 28/02/2024 08:16

It just goes to show how ingrained ageism that not only do many tolerate it but get annoyed when it's pointed out.

It's not about the duvet cover, it's about the language used to describe it. There's a world of difference.

Ikeatears · 28/02/2024 07:46

Wow! What a pile on over a duvet! We all knew what the op meant! Why the faux offence?
Grandma-ish makes me think of my own Grandma who was born in 1921 and most definitely was old fashioned.
By the way, I'm also a grandma 🤷🏼‍♀️

You may not be offended. But plenty of people are, it is an objectively ageist (and sexist) statement.
Just because you personally aren't offended doesn't make it any less actually offensive to plenty of people.

That's just an excuse to keep making stupid offensive statements. MN should be a place to learn - and OP (and others) might like to learn that this kind of blanket (pun intended) statement is "old fashioned" and should go the way of the (poor, lamented) dodo.

FWIW: my bedcovers are striped green ones, and when they get changed at the weekend) they may well be a cover I'm making out of our old tour t-shirts.

dontgetscarednow · 28/02/2024 09:06

I'm not sure that's the case - I think I was being more "stereotypical" than ageist. The same as I would say does something look too boyish, too girly, too young for me etc. all phrases that shouldn't be used anymore but it's just things you say without thinking.

Again apologies for any upset caused 🩷

you do know that things like internal misogyny are actually A Thing? And that you can be an ageist grandma even if you are - shock - an actual grandma?

Ps you know you can't say anything on here with getting gunned down in flames for being "offensive". Even if it's a light hearted comment someone will kick off 😫

borntobequiet · 28/02/2024 09:10

I’m a grandma and it’s hideous.

Brefugee · 28/02/2024 09:10

do you understand that we used to use the n-word and it was ok and it was only a little figure on a jam jar? etc etc.

The bed cover is not to my taste, but i can imagine some people might like it. using stereotypes is offensive, and thoughtlessly used stereotypes are in some ways worse because they mean people aren't thinking about what they're saying.

And MN is hugely and overtly ageist. And posters getting their backs up about not being allowed to be ageist are telling on themselves.

dudsville · 28/02/2024 09:10

The word is traditional or classic here in stead of grandma-ish, it's a standard print without any of the more contemporary twists that make a thing current. It's a nice print.
