Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

Do you want to swap places with me OP? 😁

xyz111 · 25/02/2024 14:18

You'll only be tired for that one day. It's not like you're going to have jet lag or anything. Just suck it up and enjoy yourself!!!

notimagain · 25/02/2024 14:19

Meanwhile the crew will have also have to wake up at some horrible time, have a 0500 clock on at the offices at the airport (at the latest), work on the flight, almost certainly turn in Gran Canaria to work on the return sector and by mid afternoon will be back in the UK whilst the OP is heading for the beach or pool...

I'm struggling to have a great deal of sympathy TBH.

Julianne65 · 25/02/2024 14:19

I had a 6am flight and got up at about 4am (also staying at a hotel airport). Why are you getting up to 2:30am??

bert3400 · 25/02/2024 14:21

I fly every month with RA, you really don't need to be there 3 hours before and why do you need to drop a bag for a weeks holiday? Use a carry on and I would get there for 4.30 max

Back21970 · 25/02/2024 14:24

I also hate early flights as I hardly sleep at all for fear I’ll be late.

An afternoon flight is so much more relaxed.

Last time I had to leave the house at 4am for one I stayed up the whole night, I had a nap the evening before and I was fine.

If had been in an airport hotel though I would have went to bed early and had a few coffees to get me through the morning.

When you get to your destination you’ll have hopefully forgot all about being tired.

PurpleFlower1983 · 25/02/2024 14:24

2 hours before is fine, sleep in until 3.30am.

YABU

Daisydoor12 · 25/02/2024 14:25

Unless there is a reason why you will hate feeling a tired eg on medication with a sedative effect I think you are being unreasonable. Rather than concentrating on the negative - I’m going to be tired think about the positive I won’t be wasting a days holiday, I’ll be there by the afternoon with plenty of time to refresh before dinner.

PansyOatZebra · 25/02/2024 14:25

I think YABU. Only because I’d rather an early flight than a flight later in the day. An early flight you get there earlier so can make the most of the holiday and get your money’s worth. I hate arriving somewhere and it being late in the day and it’s basically bedtime already.

Also it’s a present so I think you’re being a bit ungrateful. You’re partner has also mitigated it as much as possible by booking a hotel right next to the airport etc.

springcantcome2soon · 25/02/2024 14:25

You'll be fine
Get up, 20 mins quick get ready. Buy a sandwich and eat on plane. Snooze if you need, then slightly earlier bed time that night.

pictoosh · 25/02/2024 14:26

You are filled with dread and worrying about being tired from travelling on the first day of your week-long holiday?
You are overthinking. I understand how anxiety can blow things out of proportion but I do hope you haven't been whinging about this to him.
Just go with the flow and enjoy an early night at the hotel surely? Like everyone else does?
Not seeing the issue, sorry.

Sufac · 25/02/2024 14:26

Check in online, take a carry on, go to pret and get a breakfast and eat on the plane to give you something to do. Don’t get there 3hrs before you’ll be bored out of your mind! We don’t even get there that early with children and checked baggage!!

Isitautumnyet23 · 25/02/2024 14:27

We’ve done this multiple times for pretty much most holidays in the last 10 years (with 2 kids) as the flights to the Spanish islands usually leave at this time from our local airport. We do the drive to the airport too from our home. You only need to be there 2 hours before so if you are already at the airport, its really not too bad. We used to lift 2 kids out of bed and get them changed in the car at the airport!

Get in bed as early as possible the night before (which is easy as you’re in a hotel so wont be doing last min things at home), have everything laid out for when the alarm goes off and there will be time at the airport to put make up on properly/sort hair. I love breakfast at the airport too. Everyone looks knackered aswell, really dont worry too much about how you look. Most adults can easily survive on 5/6 hours sleep, especially if its just a one off.

The big advantage is you get to your hotel in the afternoon, you can keep the first afternoon as relaxed as possible, unpack, dinner, a couple of drinks and bed. Wake up feeling refreshed on your first proper day.

3luckystars · 25/02/2024 14:28

Everyone ‘hates being tired’ !

What do you think is going to happen, you can catch up on the holiday. What are you afraid of?

Are you ever planning on having children or a pet?

Xomega · 25/02/2024 14:28

6am is fine really if you're staying at an airport hotel.

My DH and I flew to Lanzarote yesterday from Manchester on a 7am flight with EasyJet. Our rule is that for a flight before 11am we have an airport hotel.

Our schedule was:

7pm night before, arrive at hotel and do twilight bag drop off
5am wake
5:15am out of bed
5:45 leave hotel and walk to the airport terminal
5:50 enter the Fast Track security queue
6:10 complete security
6:30 arrive at the gate having picked up some food from Boots for the plane
6:40 we were boarded

Crunchymum · 25/02/2024 14:29

I think you should most definitely, 100% cancel your holiday.

It sounds like far too much effort and faff and stress to have one early start in order to go on a lovely, surprise holiday your partner bought you as a gift.

wronginalltherightways · 25/02/2024 14:33

Airport will be way less chaotic in the early hours of the morning. I'd prefer it.

RedToothBrush · 25/02/2024 14:33

getionnn · 25/02/2024 12:29

Get up at 2.30 to put a little make up on and be at airport for 3
It's with Ryanair so need to check in suitcase then go through security then grab breakfast
Normally board 30 mins before which is 5.30 am

Your flight is 6am.

You do not need to be at the airport before 4am.

You are 5 minutes walk from the airport.

It takes no more than 15mins to get out of bed and get dressed.

Thats 4.40am.

I have no idea what you are doing the other 2hrs 10 mins.

You do not NEED makeup for the flight. Sleep on the flight.

Give yourself a massive slap and get on with it. YABU and massively precious.

Failing that quit whining and don't go. Problem solved.

Feelingstrange2 · 25/02/2024 14:34

This is a great flight time especially as you are in an airport hotel.

Work our what time you really need to be up. I wouldn't think it would be 2.30 for a 6 o'clock flight if you are that close by? Then go to bed early the night before to compensate as there isn't a lot to do in hotels at airports.

If you really are still not looking forward to it book yourself into a airport lounge if they are open. Treat yourself to a quiet place to wait with refreshments on tap.

Once you get to GC you'll be pleased about the flight time as you will be there either just before or just after check in and will be able to relax and have some holiday on that day.

kidyounot2 · 25/02/2024 14:34

I must admit I avoid the very early flights, if I can and would opt for later but what a lovely surprise - I wouldn't turn it down!

Also, I don't think you need to get up that early!! Surely, putting a bit of make up on should take no longer than 5 minutes; I'd get ready for something like this in 15-20 minutes, then grab something to eat at the airport.

Also, going somewhere hot, I'd thought you could opt (possibly pay extra) for a larger carry on. You don't need more than swim suits and a few light dresses, surely? You can catch up on sleep on a sun lounger. ;)

Even if you have to have checked luggage, I'm sure 1H45 (bag drop usually doesn't open until 2H before) before is fine so being at the airport, so getting up at 3:30am should be fine!

OlgaRhythm · 25/02/2024 14:34

Goodness, how do you cope when a real issue arises in your life?

stayathomer · 25/02/2024 14:35

the anticipation will hopefully be worse. Get up later than 2.30- have everything ready the night before. Hope it goes better than you think it will x

takemeawayagain · 25/02/2024 14:36

At Gatwick you can't even go through departures till 4 so you'd be stood there waiting for an hour at least, don't know about the airport you're going to though. For a 6 o'clock flight I'd get up at 4 and aim to be at departures for 4:30, there's no risk of getting stuck in traffic and you don't really need 2 hours to get through - getting up at 2:30 is complete madness.

RedToothBrush · 25/02/2024 14:36

getionnn · 25/02/2024 12:34

It says on my boarding pass arrive 3 hours before for international flight 💁‍♀️

I would only worry about this, if you flight leaves at peak time in peak season.

You are leaving at 6am.

2hrs is the accepted standard. Its only saying 3hrs because of a few issues within the last couple of years at peak times.

Jl2014 · 25/02/2024 14:36

Very unreasonable
