Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

Get up 3.30am, clean your teeth, get dressed, really no need for make up, check in 3.45am (ish), straight through security, coffee and food. Sleep on plane. Done.

Agree. Enjoy your holiday.

I just checked and those flights land at around 10.30am. Depending upon how long it takes to get to your hotel, you could be enjoying a late lunch on the beach.

Your DH or BF probably thought he was being clever and essentially getting you an extra day of holiday compared with if you'd flown in the afternoon and got there in the evening, but still had to take the day off work.

I would try to focus on the fact you're going to have two amazing holidays this year and not worry about it.

Do you have kids? If so, that's the only reason I might be dreading it. One year my OH had to fly out separately from the rest of us and I had to take four kids aged between one and seven on an early morning flight by myself. That was not fun. Especially when it became clear that I really had to use the toilet and had to take them all in the cubicle with me because I couldn't leave them in the airport on their own. So just think it could be worse!!! 😬😜😂

I hate early morning flights, but I wouldn’t get up at 2:30 to catch a 6 am flight if I was staying a two minute walk away from the airport.
I’d rather skip makeup and breakfast.

What a drama lama. I have to take 6 and 7am flights with two kids to see family and somehow we all survive. You don’t have ro be there 3 hours before for a european flight!
and no need for make-up, do it at the gate. Sleep on the plane and enjoy your holidays.

SignoraVolpe · 25/02/2024 14:42

You’re obviously not a morning person op.
But it’s one day and you can sleep on the plane.

HarrietStyles · 25/02/2024 14:43

I got a bunch of carnations for Valentine’s Day and I was pleased with them!

I wish my only stress in life was getting up early for a week holiday abroad, paid for by someone else.

Give your head a big wobble.

Pookerrod · 25/02/2024 14:43

I doubt much will even be open at 3am OP, definitely don’t get there for then!

I always get to the airport 2 hours before flight during school holidays and 1.5 hours before if outside of school holidays or flying business and I’ve never found that tight for timings and that’s from huge airports as I only fly from Heathrow or Gatwick.

Get out of bed at 3:45, wash face, brush teeth, chuck on clothes. Leave hotel at 4am. Check in bags, clear security, grab coffee and croissant on way to boarding gate, board plane, have a nap, apply make-up when plane is landing, disembark!

SignoraVolpe · 25/02/2024 14:43

And if it’s LBA you can’t check in until 3.30am.

Gosh. I have a terrible fear of flying. Really wish my only worry on holiday was being tired because of an early flight lol.

unless you have a medical condition, I’m not sure why you can’t cope with one early start? It’s a bit of a slog but there’s also the beautiful sunrise, and you’re on a bit of a buzz from going away… a few lazy cocktails and an early night, you’ll be fine!

Me too plus coping with two children (taking them away from being babies on multiple holidays leaving at this time).

I look at OP’s post and think she’s lucky she’s already there. We’re too close to justify a hotel so always drive to be at the airport 2 hours before a 6am flight.

Fear of flying is a really horrible thing to have and causes terrible anxiety (which I refuse to give in to and have it limit my family’s choice of holiday). I wish being tired was my only worry.

Universalsnail · 25/02/2024 14:45

I think awkward traveling times are often just part of traveling and it would be silly to be put off from going on a trip because of a 6am flight

Gillypie23 · 25/02/2024 14:46

Yes you're a miserable git. Be grateful your going on holiday.

Birch101 · 25/02/2024 14:46

Yes unreasonable

SomethingDifferentt · 25/02/2024 14:48

God I'm so the opposite of this (and I'm also not a morning person).

Holiday wise though I'd far rather a 6am flight then sleep on the plane. Our holiday in August is a 2pm flight, 3.5 hours and 2 hour time difference so we won't arrive until circa 8pm local time. It feels like such a waste.

Would far rather be up at 2am after a few hours sleep, then travel and 6am flight, get 3 hours sleep/rest on the plane, arrive circa midday and then spend day 1 actually there.

FeralNun · 25/02/2024 14:49

I wouldn’t have thought twice about an early flight when younger. Now, being well stricken in years, I like my comforts (regional airport, civilised flight times).
However, even I would suck this up as a one off!

StaunchMomma · 25/02/2024 14:49

Come ooon, OP. You've been treated to a HOLIDAY and you're 'dreading it' because of one day of being tired?!

Have an espresso & a Red Bull and, I dunno, a NAP & crack the feck on!

JMSA · 25/02/2024 14:50

Boo hoo! Grin

Wizzytimehfv · 25/02/2024 14:50

If you’re so close to terminal nothing can go wrong in the travel there, personally I’d get up at 4 and get there at 4.30/4.45. Sounds like you’re a bit risk adverse for that though so stick to the two hours people have been doing two hours since I first went on holiday many moons ago.

Tippexy · 25/02/2024 14:50

Ryanair’s own website says don’t arrive before 4.

10/10 thread idea.

Why does she need to skip breakfast???!
I'm confused. Do they no longer sell food airside or on the plane?

Its such weird logic that somehow you have to do anything but put the clothes on you left out the night before and clean your teeth.

You don't even need to go to the toilet before leaving for the airport in this scenario because you are 5 minutes away! They have toilets there. You can either check your bags in immediately cos its quite OR you can leave your bags with your partner whilst queuing and go then, thus saving yourself time.

How long does it take you to exit your bed, clean your teeth and grab your ready packed bag? If its taking you longer than 15 minutes theres something wrong.

Definitelynotem · 25/02/2024 14:51

very unreasonable imo. No one loves early morning flights but this was a lovely gesture from your DH, have a nap when you get there! Some people don’t have the opportunity to go on holiday at all and would bite your hand off for a flight at any time of day. I think a little gratitude could help here

Geranium1984 · 25/02/2024 14:52

No need to get to the airport so early! Have a shower the night before and do your makeup at the airport.
I'd aim to be at the terminal at 4.20am, so you could get up just before 4am.
As long as you haven't got small kids it won't be so bad. Later flight is ideal but you might be saving hundreds.

bloom19 · 25/02/2024 14:52

Yabu. Worst part is Ryanair but you'll be on holiday by lunchtime.

Doubt their desk is open 3am, and they will get you checked in if you're in queue. Grab breakfast and eat at the gate/ plane.

getionnn · 25/02/2024 12:34

It says on my boarding pass arrive 3 hours before for international flight 💁‍♀️

I go to Spain almost once a month from Gatwick or Heathrow. 2 hours is more than enough, even when checking in luggage.

What airport are you flying from?

Zyq · 25/02/2024 14:52

"Filled with dread" about being tired?

Yes, you'll need to get up early. However, you'll then spend several hours sitting around in the airport and on the plane, before getting to a hotel where you can sleep in the room or lie around by the pool. It's not as if being tired will actually matter or spoil anything, will it?
