Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

It'll take all of 5 minutes to browse DF in Newcastle 😆

Doteycat · 25/02/2024 18:56

Ya you are being unreasonable.
And rediculous.
And we all know you are going to go anyway.

Toottooot · 25/02/2024 18:57

Last few holidays I’ve been on I’ve had to get up at 3am and whilst I’m tired, by the time I’m sitting in the airport about an hour later with a glass of wine I’m more that over it. It’s nae a big deal.

Rosiiee · 25/02/2024 18:58

@BusyMum47 careful now. I got told off for being sarcastic for calling it a first world problem 😂

Alwayswonderedwhy · 25/02/2024 18:58

I must be in the minority but I always try and book an early flight so I can extra time on holiday. Even I you can't check in you can usually leave your bags an go and explore.

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 25/02/2024 18:59

I get anxiety about this kind of thing too. Sorry that's not terribly helpful but you're not alone x

ohskedaddle · 25/02/2024 19:00

You don't need to be up at 2.30am. Shower/hair wash before an early bedtime, make sure bags are packed more or less ready to go, up 3.30, quick rinse/brush teeth/hair and go. If you are someone who needs to travel with full face of makeup pack it in hand luggage and do it after you've been through security.

YABU

RosyappleA · 25/02/2024 19:01

I hate it too OP I’m not one who can nap later in the day so I avoid it at all costs. I end up tired and restless. To my horror I had booked a 9am flight in April and it was cancelled and they've put me on the 6am one I had been trying to avoid.

Clearinguptheclutter · 25/02/2024 19:01

Yanbu.
we did the 6am flight a couple of years ago. Kids were ok, we were exhausted. We barely slept at all waiting for the 3am alarm.

I wanted to go to Crete this year but discounted it because although the outward flights were ok I couldn’t find a return one that didn’t leave in the middle of the night

if the flight doesn’t go and come back at reasonable times, I just don’t go.

If a package holiday the 6am outward flight invariably leads to a 9am return flight (if in Europe) so that’s zero holiday on the last day.

judgementfail · 25/02/2024 18:23

Good grief, 'filled with dread?' What drama. I used to get a 6am flight every Monday to work away from home for the week. I'd have to do an 8 hour work day on arrival.

Go to bed at 9, get up at 3. No need for make up. Quick shower and at the airport by 4. You get a whole 'nother day on holiday compared to your 'lovely' 3pm flight which would get you somewhere in Europe for bed time. I'd reject the 3pm every time.
You can have a quick nap in the plane or on arrival.

It's an anxiety thing - possibly insomnia related. Comments like this will just get the OP more stressed about going to sleep because that's what people think she SHOULD be doing. I should know, I'm exactly the same way.

lenaperkins · 25/02/2024 19:04

YANBU. I'd feel the same. But if you can get hold of a sleeping pill and go to sleep really early, you might be OK

My DH loves an early morning flight and I’ve grown to love it too. Airport is quiet and not heaving, big sleep on the plane and at the hotel in time for lunch and a laze by the pool - beautiful!

I beg to differ
Manchester airport at 4/5am is absolute chaos with all the morning wave flights leaving at 6/7am. Much quieter in the afternoon where the flight times are more staggered.

ginasevern · 25/02/2024 16:21

Blimey OP, how old are you? Unless I've missed some mitigating circumstances (disability for example) why can you get up at 2.30am for one day. Especially as it's for something really lovely and exciting. I mean, you're not going to the gallows. I'm late sixties and wouldn't think twice about it.

It's a sleep/anxiety thing 🙄let's hope you're resilient enough to bounce back for a while yet

PinkEasterbunny · 25/02/2024 19:09

I would rather have an early flight, I never like arriving at my hotel in evening/night. If I have an early flight I go to bed a bit earlier?

nightmareXmas · 25/02/2024 19:11

@ForTonightGodisaDJ , that's spot on. I'm the same way. I really envy all of these people who can apparently change their sleeping pattern at will. Unless you've experienced it, this type of anxiety must sound quite strange though!

IloveAslan · 25/02/2024 19:13

YABU. I would far rather go on the early flight and have the extra time there. You can sleep on the plane. Surely you can manage one day of tiredness - or are you 90 years old?

No it's not my first time abroad we go abroad twice a year but I always have the fear of missing my flight.
We are flying from Newcastle and staying in the doubletree opposite
Last year tho our flight home was at 4.30 and we didn't get picked up by TUI till 2pm for a 30 min transfer and still made it but it was rush rush rush
I like to look around duty free then go to boots for a meal deal on the plane etc

All the shops will be closed at that time

theGooHasGone · 25/02/2024 19:13

YABU. Criminally wet.

Greenpolkadot · 25/02/2024 19:14

A lovely thoughtful surprise from your partner and you're moaning about an early start ????
Be bloody grateful

BudgetFoodie · 25/02/2024 19:15

Yabu
You definitely don't need to be getting up at 2:30

Make the best of it and enjoy your holiday.

I used to be completely fine. Then I had a lot of trauma in my late 20s and I have never gone back to normal. We need to take care of ourselves and do what's best for us to recover x

Easipeelerie · 25/02/2024 19:27

I get your concern but it’ll feel different once you’re doing it.
It’s great he’s booked an airport hotel. My DP would never do that as he would view it as a waste of money.
Just enjoy it. It’s great fun walking past Wetherspoons at 5 in the morning watching people drinking pints of wine and eating fry ups! Once you arrive, you ca have a nice nap for a few hours then you’ll feel ready for the week. If you don’t feel fully refreshed, you definitely will by the next morning.
If it helps, you could book to go in the airport lounge so you can chill more comfortably before the flight.

SparklyOwls · 25/02/2024 19:28

Gosh my 9 year old got up 2am for a flights and our flight back was delayed, we returned home at 4am. There was not one ounce of fuss or moan from him.

Seriously just crack on with it.
