Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

YABU your DH did a lovely thing for you. I’d much rather fly in the morning you get a while extra day.

hot2trotter · 25/02/2024 19:31

Oh get a grip.
I take it you don't have kids 😂
And putting make up on at 3 o'clock in the morning?? For heaven's sake, give your head a wobble, there's really no need.

Justgorgeous · 25/02/2024 19:36

My favourite time to fly and done it with very young kids. You are lucky to have 2 holidays booked. Appreciate it.

I would rather have an early morning flight then an afternoon one any day. You can rest and nap on the plane Be there for lunchtime and then relax or snooze by the pool. With an afternoon or evening flight you waste the day waiting to go to the airport. Can’t think of anything worse and I work in one.

I am with you there. Or have a full day and an early night the first night.

Gosh my 9 year old got up 2am for a flights and our flight back was delayed, we returned home at 4am. There was not one ounce of fuss or moan from him.

Seriously just crack on with it.

No offence, but this is a moot point. Children are very resilient as a general rule, this is not surprising.

Barney16 · 25/02/2024 19:41

Nope. My OH used to book early flights until I started to sob uncontrollably on a flight to Kenya because I was so overwhelmed. Since then we have only flown in the afternoon.

Lucyccfc68 · 25/02/2024 19:46

Morning flights are great. Arrive 2 hours before the flight, get a bit of food and a pint, then sleep on the plane. Just after lunch, you are sat by the pool in the sunshine. Afternoon flights means you miss out on a your first day of your holiday - complete waste of time.

Fionaville · 25/02/2024 19:47

YABU. I'm the opposite of a morning person, but even I make the effort for a holiday!

Get up at 2.30 to put a little make up on and be at airport for 3
It's with Ryanair so need to check in suitcase then go through security then grab breakfast
Normally board 30 mins before which is 5.30 am

Live without breakfast. If it is a 2 minute walk you do not need to leave at 3am.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 25/02/2024 19:52

Can you check your bag in the night before? Some airports/airlines offer this and if you’re staying at the airport anyway easy to do and just have your overnight stuff in handluggage.
don’t bother with make up. Shower the night before and just wake up 15 mins before you need to get there.

Gingefringe · 25/02/2024 19:54

The very early flights are more than likely to be on time. Any delays tend to affect later flights when there have been knock-on delays from earlier during the day.
Skip the make-up and put it on at the airport.
Enjoy your holiday.

If a package holiday the 6am outward flight invariably leads to a 9am return flight (if in Europe) so that’s zero holiday on the last day.

Fair enough. I don't do package holidays so wouldn't know. Early flight out and late flight back for me! 🙂

I get anxiety about this kind of thing too. Sorry that's not terribly helpful but you're not alone x

Me too. I feel your pain OP. I'm dreadful in the mornings. I get so anxious before going on holiday. It'll all be worth it when you get to your destination.

LaughingCat · 25/02/2024 19:58

Always gone for the morning flight - you get a full day at the place then, instead if getting in basically in time to dump your stuff and find dinner. Sorry, he bought this as a gift? Yeah, I think you’re being v ungrateful, quite frankly.

You’re already at the airport so why the heck are you getting up at 2.30am? The check in desk usually only opens a couple of hours before the flight abyway but Ryanair even does Twilight drop in the night before as long as your flight is before 8am. Check in to your hotel, drop your bags at the airport and only keep what you’re taking on the plane, and then get an early night. Get up at 3.30am, throw your clothes and face on and then stroll over to security a couple of hours before your flight leaves. Easy. I couldn’t eat breakfast before 6am, especially if the flight’s only 4-5 hours but if you get hangry it still leaves plenty of time to grab a roll from Costa or something.

My other half would be equally pissed with me though, if I did this. He likes to be in the terminal four hours before the flight leaves and I don’t see the point, so I wouldn’t even bother getting up until 4am earliest in your scenario 😂. It always seems to be that way with couples though.

ChampagneLassie · 25/02/2024 20:00

I used to be exactly the same I wouldn’t have contemplated a flight before 9am….now having had DC and no semblance of decent sleep for almost 2 years I find it funny how precious I was re an occasional early morning. But now because of DC we also only book daytime flights 😬having said all of that when you have luxury to choose I’d be annoyed at that sort of suprise.

Creatureofhabit87 · 25/02/2024 20:01

I assume you don’t have kids?
What a lot of drama about getting up early to go on holiday… my word!!
You’re going on holiday, am sure you’ll make up for lack of sleep!

Exactly this - I would hate the 3pm flight - too much hanging around. Just think you will be lying in the sun before lunch is finished

Mmmm19 · 25/02/2024 20:05

We had the same flight with two young children and 20 min drive from our house- it was fine for them and us. At least you can hopefully get an early night which we didn’t manage with packing after work

WildBear · 25/02/2024 20:08

Caught a early flight once, thought it was a great idea as I would 'make the most of the day. The reality was that I was exhausted and the whole day was a complete write-off. Saying that though, an early start and a holiday is better than no holiday. Also piss easy IF you don't have young kids to be up and out the door!

Jeannie88 · 25/02/2024 20:17

Really? I used to do school (coach abroad) trips leaving at midnight, never got any sleep, and this went into my 40s! With family holidays queuing at 3am, we just go to bed a bit earlier and then the excitement of the holidays takes over and you just catch up on your sleep. Worst was the long flights, missing a whole night then feeling wired the next day and not being able to sleep, times you need to take a sleeping pill!

Honestly, getting up a few hours earlier for one day and then having opportunities to relax isn't as bad as you're dreading. Anticipation is usually worse than reality. Get up, go and enjoy 😉 😘

mirror245 · 25/02/2024 20:19

Recently did a 6am flight. Bed at 10, up at 3.30, out by 4am and at airport and in terminal after parking at 4.30. That was early enough and had to check in cases (was a chartered flight though). Leaving a bit later meant no queue. Through security, bought a meal deal and a coffee then straight to gate. Slept for an hour or two in plane and arrived in destination at 10am. To me it's a good time to fly. Ideallya mid day flight but early is much better than a late afternoon or evening.

BusyMummy001 · 25/02/2024 20:29

Have a 6am flight with the kids in July - also staying at a hotel within a few mins transfer - going to drop the suitcases and do check in the night before so that we can turn up at 4am, though.

Not ideal, but the better times flights went via Frankfurt and DH hates change overs because of the risk of lost luggage. We have a 2hr transfer at the other end (again, the other flights would have lead to a 45min transfer).

Not been on an overseas holiday for 5 years and it is the airport malarky that has put me off. I want a start trek type transporter to beam me up.

Samlewis96 · 25/02/2024 20:42

Nonewclothes2024 · 25/02/2024 17:40

I agree re timings. I fly A LOT, you can be 45 minutes in the bag drop queue. Then security.

At a small airport like Newcastle? I don't tend to have to wait that long at Heathrow on the the early flights

Figgygal · 25/02/2024 20:49

I cant be arsed with holidays if the flights are stupid early or stupid late
I remember doing them on holidays as a kid and it was miserable as sin so I actively avoid them

twinmum2007 · 25/02/2024 20:54

OP that 3pm flight to Rhodes sounds great...Ours did last year until we got delayed at Gatwick and ended up not checking into our Greek hotel until 2am - UK time.
