Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

could you take a drowsy otc anti histimine - such as phenergan - the night before and go to bed earlier?

spottedinthewilds · 25/02/2024 18:18

You don't need to be there until 4. Sleep in your clothes, put make up on in the airport.

Many airlines have a twilight check in so that you can check in your bags the night before.

The airport won't be busy at that time , but fast track tickets when you get there if it is.

Not unreasonable, I try to avoid very early flights, but you can rest once you get to the hotel.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 25/02/2024 18:20

You can sleep when you're dead! Enjoy your holiday.

So many red flags here. I wouldn’t tolerate having a surprise holiday bought for me if it meant a 6:30am flight. Time to secure your finances, see a solicitor, and move on. You deserve so much better than this OP.

😂

PlaneMum19 · 25/02/2024 18:22

It’s literally one early get up!
come on!
and as cabin crew best time to fly in the morning, plane and crew are were they should be; you go afternoon more likely to be delays waiting for the aircraft to come back from first wave etc!

I get your point but that’s their choice!

In all probability the decision to turn up at or before 0500 bright eyed and busy tailed to prepare to face the public with a smile is probably the rostering clerk's or rostering system's choice.....

I think the expression was "if you can't take a joke you shouldn't have joined"...

judgementfail · 25/02/2024 18:23

Good grief, 'filled with dread?' What drama. I used to get a 6am flight every Monday to work away from home for the week. I'd have to do an 8 hour work day on arrival.

Go to bed at 9, get up at 3. No need for make up. Quick shower and at the airport by 4. You get a whole 'nother day on holiday compared to your 'lovely' 3pm flight which would get you somewhere in Europe for bed time. I'd reject the 3pm every time.
You can have a quick nap in the plane or on arrival.

Nonewclothes2024 · 25/02/2024 18:26

Yes , it can be. I always get the earliest flight.

Nonewclothes2024 · 25/02/2024 18:27

I don’t know about Newcastle. I use London airports.

WimbyAce · 25/02/2024 18:27

Can be a pain if taking kids but if it's just the 2 of you bit of a non issue especially as you are staying right by the hotel.

I’ve been cabin crew, I knew the deal!

Ribenaberry12 · 25/02/2024 18:30

My DH loves an early morning flight and I’ve grown to love it too. Airport is quiet and not heaving, big sleep on the plane and at the hotel in time for lunch and a laze by the pool - beautiful!

StedeBonnet · 25/02/2024 18:35

Being filled with dread about getting up earlier than usual to go on holiday is a massive overreaction. It's a holiday, it's exciting! You can sleep as much as you want when you get there. I get up at 4:30 twice a week to commute to work which is a far less exciting reason to be up early.

If the hotel hadn’t been booked and wasn’t so close to the airport I would have said YANBU

InSpainTheRain · 25/02/2024 18:41

I think YABU. why do you need to be up at 2.30am for a 6am flight if you are 2 mins from the airport?

OlgaRhythm · 25/02/2024 18:43

Is this the new 'cancel the cheque' thread ?

5YearsLeft · 25/02/2024 18:45

getionnn · 25/02/2024 12:29

Get up at 2.30 to put a little make up on and be at airport for 3
It's with Ryanair so need to check in suitcase then go through security then grab breakfast
Normally board 30 mins before which is 5.30 am

A lot of other people might have already said it, but often for the first flight of the day, the bag drop will probably only open 2 hours before the flights (so says RyanAir’s site: https://help.ryanair.com/hc/en-gb/articles/12890590563857-When-does-the-check-in-desk-open-and-close-for-my-flight ) as it’s happened to me, so you may arrive at 3am to find everything at the RyanAir desk still closed. And if you already have boarding passes you can print on line, and you just need to check your bags, you only need the “bag drop” separate from the long line with people sorting tickets and ticketing issues. If you need the check-in desks, I could perhaps understand expecting a longer line? So wake up at 330, VERY minimal makeup, make for the RyanAir bag drop, and then you’re good to go.

I also hate travel at awkward times op! Try and enjoy it anyway x

Yeah, force yourself to enjoy your week in Gran Canaria regardless 😀

GanninHyem · 25/02/2024 18:49

Crikey, I've not been able to afford even a UK holiday since before COVID. I think I'd stay awake for 24 hrs straight if it meant a week in the sunshine.

Definitely get your ducks in a row, OP.

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 25/02/2024 18:50

You don’t need makeup at 2.30am fgs. Just stick the basics in your carry on and sort it in a loo somewhere along the way if you’re that bothered.

You don’t need 3 hours to check bags and get through!

But you do need to plan to be at the gate earlier, it’ll close 30mins before departure.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/02/2024 18:52

The fact you're booked into an airport hotel means it's a lot easier than getting up at 1am and the worry of a delay enroute

That's what makes the difference for me, but then it's a family joke that every time I go somewhere there'll be a transportation crisis of some sort - car crashes, strikes, demonstrations, suicides on the line, you name it and I've had it

So now I get myself in place beforehand and just hope for the best

You don’t need makeup at 2.30am fgs

Can someone please tell the hen parties which get on these things?? Wink
With the whole slap even down to false eyelashes, the determination of some to be Insta-ready is quite remarkable

BusyMum47 · 25/02/2024 18:53

Seriously? 1st world problems. On 1 of your 2 foreign holidays a year, you have an early flight. Suck it up or don't go.
